CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: Babysitting The Kids. Part Three
STILL SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2004 FRIDAY
Brynn stared at Joe in the same horror. Her skin crawled. “W-what?” She asked, her voice barley over a whisper.
“My phone’s downstairs...” Joe repeated, staring at her. His eyes filled with terror.
Brynn shook her head. “M-maybe w-we can use your p-parents p-phone.” She was shaking.
Joe shook his head. “It’s downstairs, too.” He said quietly.
Brynn winced as she heard the sound of the intruders downstairs. She heard voices, but they were loud enough to understand them.
“We have to get those phones.” Joe said, slowly glancing downstairs.
Brynn nodded, she knew it was coming. “What do we do?” She mouthed helplessly.
“Well I’M going to go get them.” Joe said quietly, but firmly. Neither of the two tried to hide the fact that they were silently crying. Brynn shook her head. “No. I’m going with you.”
Joe went to argue, but a loud thump downstairs stopped him. He nodded. “Okay.” He whispered. He pulled her into a hug. “I love you, B.”
Brynn closed her eyes and hugged him back. “Diddo.”
Joe then stepped back and snapped into action. His jaw tightened. “I’ll run downstairs and you follow...grab the phone and lock yourself in the closet and dial, okay? No matter what. You have to get to the closet, understand?”
Brynn bit her lip.
“B?”
“I know.”
Joe nodded.
The next few minutes Joe and Brynn would remember forever. Some parts were fuzzy, but years from now the two could still remember every feeling that went through their minds. Brynn remember Joe running downstairs screaming at the intruders. She remember screaming, yelling and she saw Joe begin to fight with one. She remembered her running past them crying. She spotted Joe’s cell counter. Brynn remembered how those four steps were the longest moments of her life. She grabbed the phone and was about to take off. She was stopped when someone grabbed her arm and told her to drop the phone. She saw something in their hand. She gulped. It was pitch-black, but she had a pretty good idea what it was. She was then taken into the living room. She saw Joe yelling and screaming at the other figure. They seemed to be wrestling. The next few moments were all a blur to her. Something happened, she couldn’t remember, but she knew that Joe had been hit, and he cried out in pain. She vaguely remembered whipping around and slamming her fist into the figures that held onto her arm in the face. They were wearing a hat over their faces, but she knew she had hit them. She remembered landing on the floor. Joe was on the floor as well. Brynn was screaming and crying, Joe was struggling, and the figures were yelling. Then, it all happened so fast. The lights suddenly went on, people busted through the door. They were police. They had their guns drawn on the dark figures. They shouted something and before anyone could reply they all heard a scream of a few other people. Brynn remembered turning her head to the doorway. She was still laying on the ground screaming. She remembered turning her head and seeing Kevin run towards her. It was slow motion. Brynn slowly titled her head and saw Mrs.Jonas ran upstairs. She saw Mr.Jonas run and kneel by Joe. She saw the police officers get the two figures. But what Brynn remembered the most was Kevin’s face as he ran towards her from the doorway. He dropped to his knees and brought her to her feet. Brynn whipped around in time to see the police rip the masks of the figures. Before anyone could react, Mrs.Jonas came flying down the stairs with Frankie in her arms and Nick right behind her. They all ran to Joe. Kevin held onto Brynn as she stared at the figures. Boys, is what they were. Just boys. Not men..boys. They looked no older than Kevin. They were freaking out. Brynn stared in horror. Then, Brynn remembered going fuzzy again. She had to ask Joe later what had happened. Joe remembered sitting up, and his mouth dropped when he saw who had attacked them. Joe then whipped around when he heard a girl’s scream from the doorway. She was escorted by a police officer into their house. Mandy was in hysterics.
“They had to much to drink! I didn’t even know they brought beer!” She was shaking. “They asked if you were home alone..oh god I said yes. I don’t even know them. They came with my friend.” Mandy was crying, screaming, and flipping out all at once. “When I realized they were gone I called the police. Turns out somebody had already called because they heard screaming from this house!” Mandy then broke down and she had to be escorted out of the house. Joe later told Brynn that her face was a white as a ghost as she watched the two boys. Eyes now wide with fear. Joe told her that Kevin slowly glanced at them. His eyes were blazing with hate. In one fail swoop he let go of Brynn and charged for the boys. Joe didn’t have to tell Brynn the next part. She remembered. Her legs wobbled when Kevin ran from her, but she saw he dive for the nearest boy. If Mr.Jonas hadn’t grabbed Kevin by the shoulders, Brynn didn’t know what would happen. As his father tried to pull him away, Kevin screamed in their faces. Saying things that made Brynn shudder. Kevin’s screams were the only thing heard in the house.
“A prank?” He yelled in one boy’s face. “Do you realize what could have happened?! You could have KILLED someone? DO you understand me?”
“Kevin,” His father said, “Kevin please...”
Kevin wrenched away from his fathers grip. He’s eyes were wet with tears but they were filled of fire. Brynn was actually afraid of him. Kevin looked at his younger brothers. He looked at Brynn. He then looked at the boys being put in handcuffs. He was silently crying now. He glared at the boys. “You’re lucky there are police here. Because if they weren’t...” Kevin couldn’t finish his sentence. He broke down. “Do you realized you could of..” His shoulders began shaking and he began sobbing. He turned away. After a moment he rounded on the guys. “If I find out you have hurt my family in any way...” Kevin couldn’t finish anything. He just shook his head. Brynn began to shake as well. A prank. Two stupid boys. It was a prank. Her brain couldn’t wrap around that. Her hands began shaking and she began to take steps back as the police began to talk to Mr.Jonas. Brynn slowly began backing up until Joe caught her eye. “B?” He asked, his voice shook. Kevin heard Joe and his head snapped in her direction. She looked at him, shook her head, then took off.
Bryn remembered running up the stairs, passing the hallway, running. She remembered Kevin’s loud footsteps behind her. His voice yelling her name. She didn’t remember how she got there, but she knew she ended up on Kevin’s bed, sobbing in his pillow. It smelled like him. She didn’t remember him coming in, sitting down beside her, but she did remember him laying down beside her. She was face first in his pillow crying her heart and soul out. She shook her head. “I would have k-killed them, Kevin.” She croaked.
She felt his hand on her back shake.
“What, B?” He asked, trying to keep his voice under control. Brynn could hear the sirens of the police cars outside, the shouting of the men, the cry of Mrs.Jonas as she made sure her little ones were safe. She could hear the sound of those two boys basically crying and babbling on about how drunk they were, she could hear the sound of Joe calling out her name, a hysterical Mandy trying to be calmed down by everyone, and the sound of her heart breaking. Her whole body hurt. She abruptly sat up, almost knocking into Kevin.
“I almost KILLED them Kevin!” She screamed. She got up and ran to the window. She saw them being put into the police car. She banged on the window. “Did you hear that? I almost killed you!” She screamed at the top of her lungs and began beating on the window. Kevin ran up behind her and wiped her around to face him. She tried pushing him away. He didn’t know what she would have done. She hit him, but he didn’t seem to care. She yelled at him, but he didn’t seem to hear. She wanted his arm around her, but at the same time she wanted him not to touch her. He didn’t understand. She beat his chest. “Kevin you don’t understand!” Brynn yelled, sobbing, “If they would have touched any of them I would have killed them. They were just...they were..” She couldn’t say it. She began screaming nonsense. She tried to get away from him, but he stood there. After a moment he grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him. He wrapped his arms around her. Brynn’s hands were balled in fists and they were between her neck and his chest. After a moment she stopped trying to hurt him, and broke down. She began sobbing and her knees gave out on her. Next thing she knew they both collapsed on the floor. He still held onto her as she cried. She buried her head in his chest and shook her head. Kevin held onto her. “I love you, Brynn. I’m here..”
Brynn’s heart was racing, then it slowed into a normal pace. She took a ragged breath, and closed her eyes. Within moments she had fallen asleep. Kevin held onto her as she slept in his arms. Tears burned his eyes. He rested his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes. "I love you, B.." He repeated. His voice barely above a whisper.
