Chapter Twelve
"There isn't going to be any dancing, is there?" Charlie asked, walking up the pathway to the Jonas house with Andrea beside him.
She smiled, "I’m not making any guarantees."
"If there is, can I sneak out the back?" he asked playfully.
She laughed, "Don't worry, I'll cover you and sneak you out." She opened the front door and they heard music playing, and smelled the food cooking, "Hey everyone!"
"Hey, Andrea!" Joe yelled, and jogged over to her, with Chandler in tow, "Nick told us what he did," he whispered when he hugged her.
"Yeah, I expected as much," she whispered back, pulling away then going to hug Chandler.
"Well, what do you think?" she whispered.
"I don't really wanna talk about it right now," she told her.
"Hey, Rea," Nick said, walking over still pretty pleased with himself.
"Hi, Nicky," she said, hugging him, "Where's Kevin?" she asked when she pulled away.
"Still getting ready," he told her, looking at Charlie curiously.
"Did you tell him what happened?" she asked. He nodded. "Hey, Mama J, hey Papa J, and Frank the tank," she said smiling when she saw them make their way over.
Frankie put his arms around her waist, while Denise and Paul both hugged her on either side.
"Hey guys," Kevin said at the bottom of the stairs.
Nick, Joe and Chandler looked between Kevin, Andrea and Charlie, all curious, worried, and anxious.
She beamed at him, "Hi there, Kevy," he came over slowly and gave her a hug.
"Um, how are you?" he asked, pulling away.
She smiled up at Charlie, who smiled back at her, "I'm amazing, and you?"
He shot Nick a look before answering, "I'm not sure."
She nodded understandingly, "Nick, why don't you, Joseph, and Kevin sing?" Mr. Jonas suggested, picking up on the tense atmosphere.
Nick's pretty pleased look about him vanished, and was taken over by surprise, and sadness, "Yeah, that'll be good."
Joe gave Chandler a swift kiss on the cheek before going to the fireplace with his brother, where it appeared Nick and Kevin were silently arguing, throwing glances over at Andrea and Charlie.
Andrea raised an eyebrow at Chandler and nudged her, "A Jonas boy, eh?"
She smiled, "Perhaps."
"Huh, so we're just gonna go with a good old fashioned Christmas carol, so take a seat and sing along," Nick said, before grabbing his acoustic guitar, along with Kevin.
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is brightThe three boys were shooting glances at the two people on the loveseat, Andrea and Charlie, she was singing and he was looking around self consciously, she was laughing slightly nudging him with her leg clad in black and purple stripped skinny jeans. He then proceed to laugh and sing along. Everyone clapped when the boys were finished.
"I'm jealous, I can't sing or play guitar," Andrea said when the boys joined their group again.
"I tried to teach you, you get distracted so easily," Charlie said.
She scoffed and hit his shoulder, "I do not!"
He laughed, "Yeah, you really do."
"Oh, guys look at my Christmas gift from Charlie, pretty isn't it?" Andrea said, pointing to her black and silver baby doll top.
"You get your gift early?" Chandler asked.
"Well, I spending the morning with my dad and at ten my mom is coming to get me, so there really wouldn't be any time," Charlie explained.
"Come on, guys, time to officially light up the Christmas tree," Mr. Jonas said.
Every year at the Christmas party, depending on whose house it was at, Mr. Jonas or Mr. Rossi would light up the tree, an old tradition they had since forever. Mr. Jonas picked up the cord and plugged it into the wall, and their Christmas tree lit up with all the white lights, which illuminated the decorations on the tree, homemade and store bought.
"Santa!" Frankie shouted.
"Not yet, little buddy," Joe said, ruffling his hair.
Andrea was showing Charlie the decorations that she and the boys made when they were younger, cut-outs of Santa, snowmen, bulbs, there were little pictures of the three boys and Andrea at the mall with Santa, and also the boys including Frankie with Andrea seeing Santa in the more recent years.
"Wow, we were so hardcore," Andrea said looking at everything.
They all heard the front door suddenly slam, making everyone look around, they all noticed Kevin's absence.
"I guess that's my cue," Andrea muttered, looking up at Charlie who nodded at her, she went to the front hall put on her jacket, and boots, and went outside. She closed the door very quietly behind her, and stood on the front porch, looking at Kevin's back facing her. Suddenly, the snow began falling; she smiled and laughed silently to herself.
“You know when the snow falls,” she started, coming from behind Kevin startling him, “it’s like a whole new beginning, like, a shower to the world. Everything is just new, clean and fresh. Anything can happen when it snows.”
She walked to his side and looked up at him, "I really mean anything, Kevin."
He flashed a small smile, "I don't really think you mean anything, anything."
"Do you wanna bet?" she asked.
"I know Nick told you, Andy. And I'm not stupid, I know when someone else has won," he told her, looking up at the rapidly falling snow.
"Won?" she asked, confused.
"You and Charlie, Andrea. I saw you guys tonight," he said, turning to face her.
"Kevin, what are you talking about?" she asked.
It was his turn to be confused, "You're still dating?" he made it sound more like a question than a statement.
"No," she said simply.
"No?" he repeated.
"No," she confirmed shrugging.
"But, you guys were together in there," he said.
"Did you see us holding hands, or kissing under the mistletoe?" she asked, he shook his head, "Exactly, hence, us not dating."
"Why? Like, why did you breakup?" he asked, very curiously.
She hesitated, "He saw something about you and me that I never did. He said that he knew it was going to happen, he just didn't know when. And that if it made me happy, then that's all that he wanted. Even if it meant breaking up with him."
He still looked confused; she laughed lightly, "Kevin, I can't believe you haven't picked up on it yet. I'll try a different approach then, so, I kinda sorta like you a lot more than I had originally planned."
His eyes went wide, "Like me?"
She smiled, "I didn't know if you wanted to be the first one to say love."
"Did you just like, decide this?" he asked.
She laughed openly, "I don't think someone can just automatically decide to love someone like this. I had a crush on you way back when. Seriously, I was like thirteen. I thought you liked me, for a week or something. After that, I thought you just thought of me as the sister you never had. I guess I pushed the crush away because I never thought you would like me like that."
He took a step closer, "So, this crush, you never got over it?" he asked slyly.
She took a step closer too, "Apparently not. I hope that's okay with you."
He smiled bigger than she had ever seen, "You're the reason for this smile."
"Yeah, and you're the reason I've got these butterflies in my stomach," she said, smiling right back at him.
He touched her cheek tenderly, he waited almost like he was waiting to see if she was serious, or if someone had put her up to it, as if reading his mind she brought her hand up and ran it through his curly snow covered hair, finally resting her hand on the back of his neck, "This feels right, Kevin. I've never felt this way before; it's the most amazing feeling in the world."
If it was at all possible, his smile got bigger, "Trust me, I know the feeling, I'm feeling it right now."
Then it happened, what Kevin had always wanted, his lips touching hers in their first kiss. Passion, love, happiness, all rolled together.
"Come on, guys! I know you're in love and all, but this is the first snowfall, and I don't want you two melting it with the kissing!" Joe called from the front door.
Kevin and Andrea pulled apart, Kevin looking in Joe's direction, smiling, "If it comes to that, Joe, I would rather do this - " he made a hand motion to Andrea and himself " - than have the snow, any day."
Andrea laughed and leaned into him, facing the others, who came outside, clad in coats and boots. He wrapped both his arms around her, holding her tighter.
"Thank-you," Kevin said, over her head, to Charlie.
"Hey, it wasn't up to me. She just needed to see what's been in front of her all along," he told him.
"Andrea, you seriously had me freaking out, I thought I was the biggest idiot for doing what I did earlier," Nick told her.
She smiled at him, and pulled away from Kevin a little, "Don't worry, Nick. You're the farthest thing from an idiot."
"More like my hero," Kevin said, they all laughed. "Andy?" he murmured.
"Kevy?"
He smiled, "I love you to bits."
She smiled back at him, "I love you to pieces."
And instead of kissing on the cheek like they'd done for years, this time their routine ended with a kiss on the lips.
