Chapter 29
The bus stopped abruptly and the girls looked up simultaneously.
“Are we here?” Cami asked. Noelle turned around on the couch she was sitting on and peeked out the window.
“Looks like it.” She nodded, letting the curtain fall back into place. “Wow,” she marveled, “this is my last full night.”
“I know, I can’t believe how fast August came!” Cami exclaimed.
“Me neither.” Adina agreed. “But I’m definitely ready to see everyone again. I almost want to just go home with you guys tomorrow.” She admitted. Noelle smirked.
“If I could let you take my place, I would.” She said. Suddenly there was a knock on the bus door, and it opened.
“We’re here, girls.” Mr. Jonas said, poking his head into the bus. “The show starts in about three and a half hours; we’re a little behind schedule, so Cami, if you could get to sound check as soon as possible.”
“On my way.” Cami smiled. She got up and left the lounge to get her belongings from her bunk.
“You two better hurry up, too. Food is on its way, we’ll call you as soon as it gets here. The boys are inside already. Joe was looking for you, Adina.”
“What for?” She asked curiously. Mr. Jonas shrugged.
“Something came up; all three of them are in on it, but none of them will give any clue to what's going on.”
“Huh,” Adina frowned. “That’s weird. Ok, I’ll go find him.”
“Thanks. Don’t forget, sound check for you is at 6:30, sharp. I’ll see you guys inside.” Mr. Jonas smiled and left, closing the door behind him.
”What do you think Joe wants?” Noelle asked when he was gone. Adina shrugged.
“I don’t know,” she said as she rummaged through her purse to make sure she had everything. She slung it over one shoulder once she had confirmed she wasn’t missing anything and turned towards the door. “It isn’t like him.”
“I know, right?” Noelle laughed.
“Ready?” Cami asked, coming back into the room. Adina smiled.
“Yep,” She nodded. “Let’s go.” Together, the three of them walked out of the bus and into the hot, sunny outdoors. A security guard met them and walked them across the parking lot to the back door of the arena, fending off the few fans that had arrived early and were waiting to get in. They waved to the girls, and they squealed excitedly.
“Sorry guys,” Cami called to them. “We’re running a little late.” She apologized.
“We’ll definitely try to come back out in a little bit if we can.” Adina added. The promise seemed to satisfy the fans, and they settled for taking pictures from the distance. The security guard opened the door and held it for the girls as they walked in.
“Dina! Dina!” Frankie ran towards them as soon as they were inside. Adina laughed.
“What? What?” She asked, just as frantically.
“Hurry, Joe’s crying!” Frankie exclaimed.
“What?” All three girls asked in shock.
“He is not.” They looked over Frankie’s shoulder to see Maya walking up behind him. “Frankie, go see if your mom needs help with anything.” She told him. “And stop spreading rumors about your brother!” She called as he ran off. She shook her head. “I don’t know what to do with him anymore. Anyways, Joe’s looking for you.”
“So I’ve heard.” Adina said.
“If you go down that hall and take a right, you’ll find him.” Maya directed, pointing down a hallway.
“Ok, thanks.” Adina nodded and followed her instructions, finding Nick standing outside of a closed door, leaning against the wall with his arms folded across his chest. “Hey,” She said as she approached him. “What’s going on?” Nick sighed.
“Maria dumped him.” He said quietly with a small shrug. Adina’s jaw dropped the slightest bit.
“Oh my god,” She murmured. “Can I…” She trailed off, gesturing to the door. Nick nodded.
“He’s waiting for you.” Adina pushed the door open and closed it behind her when she was in the room. Joe and Kevin were sitting across from each other, a coffee table separating them. Joe sat with his elbows on his knees and his hands folded in front of his closed mouth, staring straight ahead. Kevin looked up at Adina and stood. As he walked passed her, he offered a friendly smile. Adina returned it and watched him leave the room. As soon as she heard the click of the door when it closed, she walked slowly to the big chair where Joe was sitting and perched herself on the arm of it. He glanced up at her momentarily.
“Hey,” he said quietly.
“You ok?” Adina asked gently, putting a comforting hand on his back. Joe was still for a moment, and then shook his head. Adina hesitated before asking her next question. “Was it because of me?”
“It had nothing to do with you.” Joe assured her. “She ended up just being…another video girl, I guess you could say. Nick was right, after all.” He sighed. “You would think I’d learn after Kevin, wouldn’t you?” He asked, not leaving enough time for an answer. “But I thought she was different. She was special.” He said quietly. “It’s just hard, you know? With us always traveling and all.”
“I know,” Adina said sympathetically. “But didn’t you say she lives in Wisconsin?” Joe nodded.
“Yea, here in Milwaukee.”
“So you could have seen her tonight!”
“That’s what I thought, too. I guess that was one backstage pass gone to waste.” He said. Adina smiled comfortingly and put her arm around his shoulders, leaning down and resting her head on top of his as she rubbed his arm reassuringly. Joe leaned into her and accepted the condolence with a sigh.
