Chapter 8 The elevator music droned on as it slowly moved up, floor by floor, to the restaurant on the highest level of the hotel.
“This is going to be really fun, seriously. The guys really know how to throw a party.” Cami smiled while the girls waited. The elevator stopped, and the doors slowly opened, revealing a blocked off portion of the restaurant. Everyone that Adina and Noelle had met earlier was there, sitting around one long table, talking quietly amongst themselves and sipping their drinks. The brothers themselves were all either leaning on the table or slouching in their seats, looking bored out of their minds.
“Yea, looks like a great time so far.” Noelle joked. Cami smirked. “Maybe they're losing their touch.” She grinned. “Nah, it’ll be fun. Anywhere the Jonas Brother go turns into one big party, you’ll see.” She promised.
“Well, let’s go sit down then.” Adina said. They made their way to the table, saying hello to everybody that they passed. Cami plopped down into an empty chair next to Nick, and Noel quickly snatched the seat across from him, nearly tripping in the rush.
“Smooth.” Adina whispered as she sat beside her sister, flicking Noelle’s thigh hidden under the table. Cami grinned.
“Nice.” She mouthed. “What's up, Nick?” She asked, turning back to him.
“Hey. Nothing, but, you guys know you can’t sit there, right?” He asked. The girls exchanged glances. “They aren’t your seats.” Nick added. Adina laughed.
“What, do they have somebody else’s name written on them?” Suddenly Frankie ran up behind Cami and stood between her and Nick with his hands on his hips.
“You’re sitting in my seat.” He said sternly. “See?” He asked, sticking a finger on the tablecloth in front of Cami. “F-R-A-N-K-I-E J-O-N-A-S. Is your name Frankie? I don’t think so!”
“Actually, yea, it does have someone else’s name written on it.” Nick shrugged. “Sorry.” Adina looked down. Sure enough, there was a small place card slipped under the side of the plate in front of her. Denise Jonas. She looked up; Mrs. Jonas was approaching the table behind her youngest son.
“Mom! They took our seats!” Frankie exclaimed. Mrs. Jonas chuckled.
“I’m sure they didn’t mean to, honey.” She assured him, picking up the piece of paper with his name to read it. Adina stood.
“Sorry Mrs. Jonas, your seat is right here.” She said. Mrs. Jonas smiled.
“No problem, Adina. Thanks.” She said, putting the card back down. “I think I saw your name down there.” She told her, pointing to the other end of the table. “I don’t know why they’re doing this; we don’t usually have assigned seats. It’s kind of like elementary school again, isn’t it?” She laughed.
“I’ll say.” Cami muttered, also standing up. “There ya go, buddy. Happy now?” Frankie smiled, showing off his missing front tooth. “You leave for two seconds to go to the bathroom…” He trailed off as he climbed back onto his chair. Cami laughed and ruffled his hair. “Come on, let’s go find our seats.” Nick glanced at the empty place on his right.
“You’re in between Maya and I, Noelle.” He said. Noelle glanced quickly at her sister and smiled.
“That’s fine by me!” She whispered as she passed her, walking towards her chair. Adina smirked.
“Have fun!” She said in a sing-song voice before following Cami.
“I bet they put me with my band. It would make sense, anyways.” She said. “I’ll see you later, ok?”
“Alright, later.” Adina replied.
“Hey Mike, is my seat over there?” Cami called as she left to sit with the small group of guys towards the middle of the long table, leaving Adina alone. She kept walking, glancing at the names on the empty seats that she passed.
“You’re right here.” She heard a gruff voice say suddenly. She looked up, and Joe was staring back at her.
“Excuse me?” She blinked.
“Adina Cartell. Last time I checked, that was you.” Joe continued, holding up the name tag.
“Oh,” Adina mumbled. “Right.” She swiftly slid her purse off her shoulder and sat down next to him.
“What's up?” He asked, the question coming out much less friendly than the phrase was originally made to be, and sounding not significantly interested in hearing a response.
“Not much.” Adina replied. “Hey, do you know why they…” She trailed off.
“Isolated us together way over here?” Joe finished. Adina smiled.
“Read my mind.” She said. Joe shrugged.
“I’m kinda afraid to know the answer.” He said. “But it isn’t fair. Look at them!” He exclaimed, gesturing toward the other end of the table where his brothers, Noelle, Cami, Maya, Frankie, and both the boys’ and Cami’s band were gathered, talking and laughing.
“I know!” Adina agreed. “And while they're partying it up, I’m stuck here alone with you.” She paused. “No offense.”
“I’m sure.” Joe mumbled. “They're setting us up, I’ll bet you anything.” Adina raised her eyebrows.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m 18, you’re 18. I’m a guy, you’re a girl.” He hinted. Adina stared back at him blankly. Joe sighed. “Our managers probably noticed the bad vibe between us. It’s their job to notice that sort of stuff, get used to it. Michael’s gonna be on your case for everything from now on. Anyways, they want us to get along; they think you need us to get along. It’s good publicity for you, hanging around me.” He paused. “Ok, that was meant in a much less conceited way than it sounded.” He chuckled. “You have a voice. Use it. Make your own name. I don’t need to, or want to, win you whatever fame you end up getting.” Adina scoffed.
“That isn’t going to happen.” She insisted. Joe stared at her.
“Huh. When you get fans, and they send you mail, guess what it’s going to say on the envelope?”
“…My name?”
“Care of Disney.” Joe snapped. “Get used to it.” He looked away when Michael, Matt, and Rob approached their section of the table. They all sat down across from Adina and Joe and leaned forward.
“Adina,” Michael started. “As you may know, what you would be performing on this tour has been in some debate. Cami is opening with some of her own material, and the boys have a full set to do. That doesn’t leave much room for you, does it?”
“No.” Adina shook her head. She had been wondering about this herself for the past couple of weeks.
“But we couldn’t let a talent like yours just slip on by! Matt, Rob, the other tour executives and I have considered some different options, but nothing seemed to fit as well as what we’ve come up with just this morning.” Michael’s voice was fast with excitement. After a brief, allegedly dramatic pause, he finished. “A duet!”
“A duet?” Adina asked.
“A duet.” Michael repeated. “Think about it; you, and Joe, together on one stage, your glorious voices blending together into perfect harmony; the audience will love it!” He watched as Adina’s face went from curious, to confused, to shocked, almost annoyed.
“What would we sing?” She asked quietly.
“It’s one of their songs, a new one. It will be on their new album, won’t it, Joe? I think you’ll love it; it’s called Love Bug.” Adina raised an eyebrow and glanced at Joe out of the corner of her eye. He looked away from her, suddenly becoming very interested in his ostensibly untied shoelace.
“We’re hoping to work it into the set by next week, Joe will teach you the song and work on it with you until then, won’t you, Joe?” Matt asked. Joe looked up and shrugged.
“It’d be my pleasure.” He mumbled.
“Adina, sweetie, this is exciting news. Turn that frown upside-down!” Michael smiled.
“I’d…I’d rather not.”
“Excuse me?”
“Um…you know, I think my voice would really sound great with Nick’s. Or Kevin’s. Or hey, Cami’s! I was listening to some of her work earlier, it’s fantastic. I think we could pull off a double act.” Adina suggested. She noticed Joe roll his eyes. Michael furrowed his eyebrows.
“Kevin doesn’t typically do much singing. And Cami is on this tour for the same reason as you are, to be promoted. Putting two unknowns together doesn’t do either of you any good. Putting you with a very widely known, however,” He said, gesturing to Joe, “does wonders for your career. Singing with Nick or Joe may be social suicide when it comes to dealing with the young ladies, but you have no choice. I’m sorry, but you signed a contract.”
“Could we possibly change the song?” Joe asked. “Please? She’d make a great video girl, don’t you think? Or maybe One Man Show. Or even better, Year 3000 or Kids of the Future or something like that.” The men stared at him.
“Joe, it’s going to turn out perfectly, I promise you. Work out a time with Adina to practice, you guys are going to sing Love Bug. It’s going to be great.” Rob smiled. Joe sighed and nodded.
“Yea, really great.” He muttered. He put on a smile until the men left, then turned to Adina and wiped it straight off. “I’ll teach you the song. Other than that,” He grumbled, “stay out of my life.”

i know. but he has a reason for acting that way. and once you understand that reason, it *might* be kind of like "aww, that joe. hes so sweet" or maybe not. depending on how well i pull off that particular scene..
i wouldnt portray anyone as a "jerk" without a valid reason, and that includes our boys ;D
and i am known for always having happy endings to my stories, unless assigned to do otherwise, which is not the case here. so itll all turn out ok.

Chapter 9
Adina tugged on the cold metal handles and pulled the heavy double doors open, unveiling a large, nearly empty room. Joe looked up from where he was perched on a piano bench, a guitar resting on one knee.
“You’re late.” He said simply. “Where were you?” “Showering?” Adina shrugged.
“Didn’t Michael tell you to meet me down here at 2:00 sharp?”
“Well, yea, but-”
“We only have an hour before we need to be at the arena.” Joe snapped, interrupting. He sighed, and his cold glare mitigated. “Start making a habit of being on time, alright?” He asked in a softer tone. “I was told that you were given a copy of the lyrics and the demo of the song. Did you listen to it?” Adina nodded and so did Joe. “Good, let’s get started then.” He slid over on the piano bench and patted the seat beside him. “So how do you think you want to do this? You start with the first verse; I do the second, and so on?”
“Sure, that sounds good.”
“Does it?” Joe inquired. Adina looked at him questioningly. “Go for it.” Joe looked away from her and to his guitar. He began playing, and stopped after a moment. He looked up at Adina and smirked. “As in start singing?”
“Oh. Sorry.” Adina blushed. Joe chuckled and began playing again while Adina pulled a piece of paper with the lyrics printed on it out of her pocket and unfolded it. She cleared her throat and watched Joe for her cue.
“Two, three, and go.”
“Called you for the first time yesterday; finally found the missin' part of me. I felt so close but you were far away; left me without anything to say.”
“Keep going.” Joe said while she sang.
“Now I'm speechless, over the edge, I'm just breathless; I never thought that I'd catch this love bug again. Hopeless, head over heels in the moment; I never thought that I'd get hit by this love bug again.”
“And out.” Joe ordered when she finished the last line of the chorus. “That was good,” He nodded as he continued to play. “That’s definitely your part.” He said. “Now do back up.” He waited another moment, then took a breath and began to sing. “I can't get your smile out of my mind.” He glanced at Adina.
“I can't get you out of my mind.” She sang, hesitantly. Joe nodded and continued.
“I think about your eyes all the time. You're beautiful but you don't even try”
“You don't even, don't even try.”
“Modesty is just so hard to find. Now I'm speechless, over the edge, I'm just breathless; I never thought that I'd catch this love bug again. Hopeless, head over heels in the moment; I never thought that I'd get hit by this love bug again. Together now, don’t fall behind.” He said quickly at the end of the chorus and watched Adina until she joined him. “Kissed her for the first time yesterday; everything I wished that it would be. Suddenly I forgot how to speak. Hopeless, breathless, baby, can't you see? Drop out now. Come back in the end. Whenever you think is right.” Joe said, strumming faster. “Now I'm speechless, over the edge, I'm just breathless; I never thought that I'd catch this love bug again. Hopeless, head over heels in the moment; I never thought that I'd get hit by this love bug again.”
“Love bug again.” Adina finished with him. They sat in silence afterwards, the only sound in the room being the brief echo from the guitar. Suddenly, Joe broke the contact their eyes had made. “I can’t do this.” He mumbled, standing up abruptly. He lifted the guitar strap over his head and set the instrument on the floor, leaning it against the leg of the piano. He swiftly left the room and disappeared around a bend in the hallway. Adina stared at the empty doorway for a minute. Finally, she sighed and stood up.
“Joe?” She called, making her way for the hall. She quickened her pace to a jog and ran straight into somebody coming from the opposite direction.
“I’m so…” She quickly started to say, but stopped when she saw who it was. “Oh, sorry Nick; I didn’t see you.” She apologized. “Are you ok?” Nick straightened out his shirt and nodded.
“Yea, fine,” He said, “How’s the rehearsal coming? Is Joe…” He trailed off, peering over Adina’s shoulder.
“He left.” She explained. Nick groaned.
“You’re kidding.” Adina crossed her arms over her chest and shrugged.
“No. I don’t know what happened, things were going pretty ok. I don’t think either of us had the urge to kill each other.” She smirked. Nick grinned.
“An improvement.” He joked. “Do you know where he went?” Adina shook her head and Nick sighed. “Whatever, just leave him. He’s…going through some stuff right now. He’ll be back in time to get ready for the concert. Sorry about your rehearsal getting cut short.” He quickly glanced at his wrist, checking the time. “Hey, do you wanna go grab something to eat?” He asked.
“Now? Joe said that we only had an hour before we have to leave. And that was a while ago.” Adina said. Nick chuckled.
“Oh, please. We got all the staging stuff done last night, we don’t have to be there until four tonight.” He said. “Come on, I’m hungry. There's a pizza place right across the street, it’ll be fun.” Nick smiled. Adina hesitated.
“The Nick Jonas, out in public? Is that such a good idea?” She snickered, holding her hands up and imitating somebody taking a picture. Nick laughed lightly and shrugged.
“Adina, you have a pretty good guy friend back home, don’t you?” He asked.
“Yea, why?”
“Ahh, so you know how it is when you separate a hungry boy from his food.” Nick laughed and held up the hoodie he had been carrying. “It’ll be fine. Come on. They have bacon pizza!” He taunted. Adina laughed and Nick put the sweater on, pulling the hood over his head so that it shaded a good majority of his face. He pulled a pair of sunglasses out of the pocket and put them on.
“Bacon?”
“Canadian bacon.” Nick nodded, holding out his hand. Adina glanced around, almost nervously, and Nick smiled. “We’ll be back in time, don’t worry about it. It’s not like Joe’s going to come back to finish your lesson.” He said, reaching down and picking up Adina’s hand rather than wait for her to take his. He gently pulled her as he turned around and began walking toward the exit, and she willingly followed.
