Finally, after hours of being on the bus, we were going to stop and go outside for a little while. We were just hanging out in some parking lot, Kevin, Nick, Aly, and I were playing catch, and Joe was, as usual, was with AJ. After a while, our parents came out and said something to AJ and Joe. They nodded, and then separated for the first time in about 45 minutes to go inside the tour busses. Mrs. Michalka motioned for us to come. “Are we leaving already?” Nick asked as we walked up for them. “Yea, you guys said we’d stay here until the show tonight!” Aly added. “We aren’t going anywhere, you are. There’s an amusement park a couple blocks away and we thought you guys might like to go for an hour or so.” My dad said. Finally! Something to do besides sitting in a bus, standing in a parking lot, sitting backstage, sleeping, and repeating. I swear I never saw my brothers get ready to go somewhere quicker than they did then. In just 20 minutes, all 6 of us were walking through the gates, wristbands wrapped securely around our wrists. Joe actually snapped out of his obsession with AJ and paid attention to the rest of us for once. “Look at that roller coaster! Let’s go!” He said excitedly, pointing to the ride. “You’re screaming first.” I said while we waited in line. Joe shook his head. “No way, you’re definitely screaming first.” He replied. Ever since we were little, any time we went on a roller coaster, we had this contest. We would ride the ride, and try not to scream at all. Whoever did first loses, and then we’d get back in line no matter how long it was and go again, this time screaming our heads off because let’s face it, it’s a whole lot more fun when you scream. “It’ll be Becca, definitely.” Nick said, looking the roller coaster over. Kevin nodded in agreement. “I’m giving her…a minute?” He said thoughtfully. Nick shook his head. “A minute and a half.” He said. The two of them had a little contest of their own, they bet on me and Joe, guessing who’d lose and how long we’d manage not to scream. I silently agreed with them, knowing I would probably be the one screaming. But to my surprise and everyone else’s, I didn't make a sound the whole time. “Finally!” Kevin said when we got to the front of the line. You could fit three people in one seat, and Joe and AJ sat down right in front, Kevin and Aly behind them. Nick went to sit next to Aly, and I was about to sit next to Joe, but AJ quickly stopped me. “Nick, sit with us!” She said. Nick looked from me to Joe. “Uh…” He said, not knowing what to do. “He can sit wherever he wants.” I said, once again trying to sit down. AJ glared at me. “Nick, sit with us.” She said again. “Joe!” I said, wishing he’d say something. He shrugged. “Can’t you just sit with them?” He asked, motioning to Aly and Kevin. “Excuse me, you’re both going to have to take a seat please.” One of the employees said, walking past us. “Fine.” I said, moving back to the second row. “Sit in the middle.” I whispered to Nick as he passed me. He nodded; he knew I didn't like AJ. “Uh, Joe? Can I be in the middle?” He asked. Joe looked at him. “Can’t you sit on the end?” He asked, glancing toward AJ. “But…I don't like being on the end! It’s scary.” Nick pleaded. “Dude, you’re 14 in a few months. Get over it.” Joe said, moving closer to AJ so Nick wouldn’t sit there. “Ok.” Nick looked at me and shrugged, sitting down. For the next three minutes, I sat, staring at my brother and his girlfriend, who was screaming ridiculously and clinging onto his arm like there was no tomorrow.
“Doesn’t he realize she’s doing this?” Mandy asked. “Apparently not, but I wish he would…all she’s doing is trying to keep him away from his family and friends. It’s not fair!” I complained, wishing I was back in Wyckoff with her. “It’s not.” She agreed. I sighed. “I hate this. I’ve had awkward situations with Joe’s girlfriends before…trust me, coming home to find my best friend kissing my brother…not exactly the best day of my life.” Mandy laughed. “Hey, it was a little weird for us too. I’ve known this guy since he was in diapers, we’re practically family.” She said. “Yea…but it all worked out, you guys were happy, and that’s all that mattered.” I said. Mandy was silent for a few seconds. “Well…isn’t he happy now?” She asked quietly. I hadn’t thought about that too much. “I guess…but he shouldn’t be! She’s horrible! She’s controlling his life, not letting him near anyone but herself, or do anything unless it’s what she wants to do! You know yesterday before we left, Joe passed up a game of whiffleball? You know that’s not like Joe at all! And it wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for her! Plus she has respect problems…I don't know how many times she’s made fun of our rings.” Actually it was one time, and she wasn’t making fun, she simply asked what they were for…but what the heck. “I just don't like the way she treats Joe.” I sighed. “How would you know what she’s like around him? Obviously you haven't been around them too much, if everything you said was true. You never know Becca, maybe he really likes her. Look, I gotta go, unlike you I actually have to get ready to go to school. I’ll call you later.” “Bye.” I said and hung up. Maybe he really likes her. I sighed, shaking my head. He couldn’t…could he? “Kevin?” I called, hoping he was awake. It was still pretty early. A few seconds later, he peeked out of the long curtain separating the beds from the rest of the bus. “Yea?” He asked, rubbing his eyes. “Can I talk to you about something?” He’d know what to do. He always knows what to do.

It’s been over a month. There were only a couple weeks left of the tour before we’d be heading back to New Jersey. “Boys, Rebecca, your mother is on the phone.” We heard our dad say. I stopped reading and joined the rest of my family at the front of the bus. My dad hit speakerphone and set the phone down on a table so we could all talk. “Hey mom!” We all said, starting to all talk at once. She laughed. “One at a time! How’s the tour going?” She asked. “Awesome, you should have seen last night’s show! It was amazing!” Joe said. “Yea, even Aly and AJ and their mom said we did great.” Kevin added. “And it’s like we’re getting more and more famous every day, this tour is really getting a lot more kids to listen to our music.” Nick said. “Yea mom, yesterday me and Nick walked to this little store to get some snacks and these three girls were there and they started screaming ‘oh my god, it’s Nick Jonas!!’ the second we walked in.” I laughed. Kevin laughed too. “Everywhere we go they’re like ‘Nick you’re so hot!’ It’s crazy.” He said. Nick’s cheeks started getting a little pink. “My little Nicholas? You stay away from those girls, ok Nick? You tell them your mommy is the only woman you need in your life.” We all laughed as Nick’s face got redder and redder. “Mom!” He complained. “Oh, you know I’m kidding.” She laughed. Joe’s cell phone started ringing. As he went to answer it, the rest of us kept talking to mom, and a few minutes later Joe was grabbing his Jacket and about to head out the door. “Where are you going?” Dad asked. The bus was parked, we had stopped for the night, but it was pouring rain out. “Oh, I’m just gonna go hang out with AJ for a while.” He said. “Well cant you wait for a few minutes and come here to talk to your mother?” We all stopped talking to look at Joe. “Joseph, there was something I needed to talk to you guys about.” Mom’s voice broke the silence. “Later mom, ok? I gotta go.” Before we could stop him, he was out the door running across the parking lot to the other bus. “Is he gone?” Mom asked. “Yea, sorry mom. What were you going to tell us?” Kevin asked. Our mother sighed. “Actually, I was hoping that all of you would be there to hear this, but you might as well know now. I’ll call back later to talk to your brother…” We could hear sadness in her voice. “What is it mom?” I asked quietly, not wanting any more bad news. “Your grandmother is…well, she’s very sick. She is in the hospital now, and they don't know…” She stopped, taking a deep, shaky breath. “…They don't know if she’ll make it much longer.” She finished. Nobody said a word. “I’m going to fly out tomorrow with Frankie to see her. We’ll stay with your uncle, we should be home by the time you come back.” She said quietly. While my brothers and father continued talking to mom, I quietly slipped away without them noticing. I went outside, not caring that I was getting soaked. I walked over to Aly and AJ’s bus, fists clenched and my face soaked from both the rain and tears. I pounded on the door until Aly opened it. “Becca! What are you doing out in the rain? Come inside!” She said, but I had already pushed past her. “Where is he?” I asked, looking around even though my vision was blurred with my eyes full of tears and rainwater. I had gotten used to Joe not being around as much as he used to be, but this was too far. I had blamed AJ 100% in the past, but right now, I was furious with my brother. As much as I hate to say it, our grandmother was suffering from cancer, and could possibly be dying, and he couldn’t even stay with his family long enough to hear that much.
The concert the next night wasn’t the same. We hadn't heard from our mom all day, and anyone who saw us could tell you we were worried. Joe felt terrible for walking out like that when he knew perfectly well that when our mom said she had something important to tell us, it was important. I think it made him realize that he was really spending a little too much time with his girlfriend and not enough with everyone else. I sighed, looking away from the entrance to the stage, and sat back down on a plastic chair. “Hey.” I heard a quiet but familiar voice behind me. I turned around and saw Joe, looking guilty and upset, standing there. As mad as I was, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He was my brother after all, and I hated seeing that sad look in his eyes. I half smiled. “Hey.” I said back. Hands in his pockets, he shook his head, looking at the ground. “I really messed up this time, didn't I?” He asked, pulling up a chair and sitting down next to me. I wanted to say yes, but sighed instead. “No, Joe. You just…got a little carried away is all.” I said. “But it’s more than that. I didn't get to do so many things because I was so caught up in being with AJ…and you don’t even like her at all, do you?” He asked. “Well…” I knew I couldn’t possibly lie to him. “No, not really. We don't get along, but if you really like her then…” Joe interrupted. “No. There is no ‘then’. You guys hate each other, that’s all there is to it. And I can’t have my sister and my girlfriend hating each other.” He said. “I just want you to be happy.” I said quietly. He smiled at me. “Well I will always be way happier with Becca than AJ.” He told me. “Besides, the tours almost over, and then what? She lives in LA. We live in Wyckoff. There's a whole country between us.” He said, not looking too happy about that fact. “Jonas Brothers, you’re on in 5.” We heard a voice say over the intercom. “Joe!” We turned and saw AJ standing by the edge of the curtain leading onto stage, waving. Joe looked at me. “Just do what you think is right. I’ll be behind you 100%, whatever you choose.” I said, truly meaning it. He smiled. “Dude, let’s go already!” Nick said, jogging past us to join Kevin and the girls. “Thanks Becca, love you.” He said quickly and left. “Love you too.” I replied, even though he was long gone. I had a feeling everything would turn out ok.

“We’ll miss you guys so much!” Aly said, hugging me. The final concert of their tour had ended almost an hour ago and we would have to leave in a few minutes. “You have to e-mail me at least a couple times a month, ok?” I asked her. “Are you kidding me? Twice a month? No way Becca, every day!” She laughed. I laughed too as she moved on to Nick. I glanced over to AJ and Joe. They were just sort of standing there, looking very uncomfortable. The broke up last night. They decided that with the tour ending, they wouldn’t be seeing each other a lot, and it would just be easier this way. That and, as Joe later told me, his mom and sister came before any other girl he knew. AJ seemed to be a little nicer to me after that; I guess she didn't feel like she had to compete for Joe’s attention with me anymore. She never did in the first place, but whatever, I’ll let her think that. Finally Joe gave her a quick hug and she went to say goodbye to Kevin and Nick. Then she came to me. “Bye Rebecca.” She said, almost nervously. I smiled. “See ya AJ. I replied. And she walked away. No hugs or anything like that, which was fine by me. “Girls, hurry up. We have to get to the airport!” Mrs. Michalka called. “Coming!” Aly called back. We all said one last goodbye and watched as they ran to catch up with their mother. “We’ll be home tomorrow.” Kevin said, smiling. “We can sleep in our own beds.” Nick added. “We can see mom and Frankie.” Joe said, his smile fading just a little. So did mine. Mom and Frankie would be home. Which meant they would either have good news or bad news. “We can…go back to a regular school.” I said quietly. I knew it wasn’t as good as what the others had said, but it was the only thing left to say besides ‘we can see what happened to grandma.’
“Go away!” I said, trying desperately to ignore the knocking on my bedroom door. Whoever it was paid no attention what so ever to my pleas and opened my door, letting themselves right in. I rolled over to see a small face with big brown eyes and curly hair. I smiled, realizing that no matter how tired I was, it was impossible to be mad at this kid. “We’re leaving in 15 minutes if you’re coming.” He said. I groaned. “Are you serious? Why didn't anyone wake me up?” I asked, glancing at my clock. 10:30. Nick shrugged. “You’re always cranky when you get up.” He said. “I am not!” I snapped, getting out of bed. Nick chuckled, and I shook my head, noticing that I just proved his point. “Well next time remember to set your alarm clock.” He said. We’ve only been home for two days, I got approximately 4 hours of sleep each night on the tour bus, and I definitely wouldn’t be touching my alarm clock for a while. “All right, well you guys go ahead, I’ll meet you there as soon as I can, now out!” I ordered, leading him to the door. 25 minutes later, I was greeted by the warm sunshine of early summer mornings in New Jersey. I took a deep breath of the fresh air before starting my 10-minute walk to the Wyckoff mall. As soon as I got there, I was face to face with a huge poster hung on the main entrance door. “The Jonas Brothers Meet and Greet TODAY 11:00~12:30.” I read out loud. When I went inside, all I had to do was follow the sweet sound of screaming girls mixed with my brothers’ song, ‘I Am What I Am’, one of my personal favorites, playing loudly on the loudspeakers. “Look, it’s the Jonas sister!” I laughed and waved to the fan that had recognized me as I approached the small table at the end of the room. “Look who’s finally here!” Kevin said when I got to them, not bothering to look up from the poster he was signing. He passed it on to Joe, smiled at the girl and thanked her for coming, before turning to me. “Can you go to Starbucks for me?” He asked, exhaustion in his eyes. “We have a break in half an hour.” Nick pointed out. Kevin shook his head. “I don't care, please Rebecca?” I nodded, knowing if he didn't get caffeine things couldn’t turn out too good. “Be back in 5 minutes.” I told him, turning around to go to his favorite place in the mall. After I ordered a drink for both Kevin and I, I sat down at a table while I waited. After half a minute, I heard someone talking behind me. “…No I don't know where that is! I’m only here for this thing with Claire and then I’m planning on leaving…. fine. If I can figure out how to get there, I’ll come. Otherwise I’m going home… ok, bye.” I turned around to see an incredibly cute guy around my age, maybe a couple years older, looking disappointedly at the cell phone he had just closed. I tried to decide between saying something to him and just leaving him alone, figuring that if he was in town for something with ‘Claire’, he had a girlfriend anyways. But he was leaving today, so if the girl got mad at me, so what? “Did you need directions?” I asked, startling him. “Oh, yea that’d be great! You live around here?” He asked. “Yea, I know this place inside out. Where are you going?” I asked him, satisfied with the happy look on his face. He invited himself to sit down at my table, telling me a street that was in another town, but still just a couple miles away from where we were. I drew out a map on a napkin for him. “Wow, thank you so much! An old friend of mine lives here, but he just moved to the area so he doesn’t even know where this place is. I didn't think I’d be able to visit him.” The guy said gratefully. “I’m only here because of those Jonas guys…my little sister’s in love with them.” He said, rolling his eyes. I laughed. Great, the girl was his sister. This day just keeps getting better and better. He looked at me, then over my shoulder to where my brothers were still signing autographs, then back at me, but if he realized the similarities between us he didn't show it. Instead he waited while I picked up the coffees I had ordered and then we sat there for I don't even know how long talking about anything and everything. Before I knew it I saw a little boy that looked just a bit too familiar walking towards our table. Please, Frankie, any time but now. I begged, hoping somehow he’d be able to read my thoughts. Then I realized I had accidentally given Kevin’s coffee to the guy, who’s name I now knew was Jason, and he was probably furious and sent the little guy over to get me. “…My sister’s probably gonna wanna hang around the mall all day, and my friend isn’t expecting me at his house until later, so…do you maybe want to go to a movie or something?” Jason was saying something, pretty nervously too, but I wasn’t paying attention. Frankie was just a couple feet behind him now, his mouth open like he was about to blurt out my name. “No!” I hissed. Frankie closed his mouth, stared at me for a couple seconds, then shrugged and left. I relaxed, turning back to Jason, who looked confused and hurt. Oh man, what had he just asked me? I gasped, realizing what he had said and how he thought I had answered, and quickly shook my head. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry, my little brother was coming…I was talking to him, not you.” I tried to explain. Jason turned around, and thankfully he noticed the small kid running towards the rest of my family. He smiled, watching Frankie. “It’s ok, my sister used to do that to me too. So…does that change your answer to a yes?” He asked, eyebrows raised, looking very hopeful. I smiled, about to say yes, when Jason’s expression changed to one more serious and almost…angry? “Hey Jason!” I heard a high-pitched, excited tween voice say. I turned around and saw Kevin and some girl, his arm around her shoulders, holding her close to him. Jason stood up, angry at the sight of some 19-year-old guy with who I’m guessing was his little sister. “What do you think you’re doing?” He asked, moving around the table to stand in front of Kevin. “Jase, this is Kevin Jona…” The girl started saying, but Jason cut her off. “I don't care who he is, you’re 13 years old. And you’re what? 18? 19?” Kevin shrugged. “20 in a couple months, what's the big deal?” He asked. Jason grabbed the girl’s hand and pulled her away from my brother, and got in front of her to make sure Kevin didn't do anything. “The big deal is you just messed with the wrong guy’s little sister.” He said. Kevin looked shocked. “Oh, you have a little sister?” He asked before coming to me and putting a hand on my shoulder. “Well so do I. Come on Becca.” He said, putting his hand out for me to take. Jason’s mouth opened and closed a few times like he was trying to say something. My jaw had dropped in shock, knowing my brothers had always been protective, but not so much as to come up to a guy and pull me away from him. After we had gotten far away enough from the Starbucks for Kevin to let go of me, I stopped walking. “What were you thinking?” I asked him, trying to appear madder than I was, realizing the girl had probably mentioned they would be out of here in a couple hours, so he probably figured it was no big deal. Kevin just shrugged and grinned, pulling up a chair for me to sit behind their table where my parents and Frankie already were. “I was thinking you gave the guy my coffee.” He said, winking at me before turning his attention back to the fans. I laughed, knowing he didn't mean to mess things up. The guy was leaving to who knows where soon anyways; it wasn’t too hard to get over. Besides, there were a lot worse things that were about to happen.
My eyes shot open. I looked around at the darkness that surrounded me. It was silent. Maybe I had been hearing things. No, there it was again. The phone was definitely ringing. I looked over at my clock. 3:14 AM. I heard my dad get out of bed down the hall and go downstairs. His voice was muffled as he spoke to whoever it was, and eventually he came upstairs again to get my mom. After waiting for 15 minutes and neither of them coming upstairs, I got out of bed and quietly left my bedroom. I slowly went to the bedroom next to mine and opened the door a little, peering inside. Nick and Frankie hadn't even flinched and were safe and sound in their beds. They had always both been heavy sleepers, along with Joe. But I knew the noise must have woken Kevin up. I tiptoed across the hall and right when I was about to open the door, he came out. “I thought I heard you up.” He whispered, rubbing his eyes. “What's going on?” I asked him. He shrugged, and then headed for the stairs, motioning for me to do the same. I followed as he crept halfway down, but wasn’t expecting him to stop suddenly. “Ow! Kevin!” I whispered after crashing into him. “Shh!” He whispered back, pointing to the kitchen. We had a clear view of my mom sitting at the table, head in her hands, her shoulders shaking slightly. My dad sat next to her, rubbing her back, pain in his eyes. I gasped and looked at Kevin, realizing what had just happened. Our dad heard me, looked up at us, and slowly nodded his head once, his eyes closed, letting us know we were right. Kevin turned away from our parents, going past me to run back up the stairs. I took one last look at my mom and dad, a tear slowly rolling down my cheek, before going after my brother. I found him in my room, lying on my bed, his face buried in his arms. I silently went over and sat on the edge of the bed and put a hand on his back. “Kevin?” I whispered. He looked at me for a second before sitting up, shaking his head. “Mom told us she was ok, that the doctor’s said she would be fine for at least a few more months!” He said, his voice cracking. “I know.” I said, the look on his face just adding to my sadness. Kevin wiped his eyes and bit his lip, turning away so I couldn’t see his face. “It’s ok to cry.” I said quietly, feeling my own eyes start to fill with tears. He faced me again, and even in the darkness of 3 AM I could tell his eyes were red. He scooted back on my bed to lean against the wall and put his arm out for me to come next to him. I did and we sat there, side by side in the middle of the night, crying.
“Dude, what are you doing in here?” I opened my eyes and saw Joe standing in the doorway. He must have been pretty confused to wake up and see his brother was gone, then to find him sleeping in his sister’s bedroom. I yawned, carefully trying to get out of bed without disturbing Kevin. He probably hadn't fallen asleep for a long time after I did, and I could feel the top of my head was damp from tears that had fallen from his eyes. “What’s he doing here?” Joe asked as I walked over to where he was standing. He looked at me weirdly and felt my hair. “And why is your hair all matted like that? It’s like…dampish too.” He looked to Kevin, noticing the tear stains on his face and laughed. “Aww, did Kevy have a bad dream and have to come to his little sister for comfort?” He asked in a mocking tone. At that I just completely broke down, collapsing to the ground, tears pouring madly from my eyes. “Becca?” Joe said quietly, probably confused and scared. He kneeled down and moved some hair away from my eyes, trying to get me to look at him. “I’m sorry Bec, I didn't mean that…” He said. I shook my head, unable to speak. Joe looked from the bed, to me, and to the door nervously. “Here, get back in bed.” He said, helping me stand and get back to the bed. “Just stay there.” He said before running out of the room. By then Kevin had woken up and was wiping his face off with his sleeve and running a hand through his hair, trying to clean himself up a bit. Moments later Joe was back, dragging Nick behind him. Frankie was trailing close behind but Joe told him something and closed my door before he could come in. Nick sat down on the floor in front of my bed and Joe hopped onto my desk. “Ok. What happened?” He asked, looking at Kevin and me. I sighed a very shaky sigh and looked at Kevin. He put a hand on my knee and took a deep breath, relaxing himself. “Well…last night while you guys were still sleeping…” I started, looking down at my younger brother. His bright eyes and innocent face just stared back at me. I bit my lip, shaking my head, and reached for his hand. I couldn’t say it. Joe jumped off my desk and came to sit with the rest of us. “Last night what?” He asked softly, I think already having somewhat of an idea. “Grandma passed away.” Kevin whispered, his voice faltering at the end of the sentence. He shook his head, and he repeated himself as if he couldn’t believe what he had just announced. “Grandma passed away.”

We sat in silence, waiting. I reached over to where Frankie was settled on the coffee table and straightened out his jacket. He gave me a half hearted smile as a ‘thank you’ before continuing to stare down at his hands, which were folded in his lap. I heard a quiet sigh from behind me and glanced at Nick, who was sitting exactly like Frankie was, looking just like an older version of the child. “Ready?” Our mom asked softly, entering the room with her brother-our uncle. The four of us stood and followed to where the rest of our family was waiting outside. A few relatives I haven't seen since I was little hugged my parents, my brothers, and me before we all piled into three large cars. I stared out the window from the back seat of my uncle’s car the whole way to the chapel. Even though Arizona summers were supposedly warm and sunny, today was foggy and gray. Fit for a funeral, I suppose. I heard Joe quietly humming something from beside me, Nick tapping his thigh to the beat of the mystery song. When Joe stopped, he looked from Nick to Kevin, and all three of them smiled, nodding. I had no idea what was going on, but it didn't matter. We had arrived. We met with tons of family members in the church parking lot, everyone hugging each other and chatting about what had been happening since they saw each other last. I stood on the side, watching everything around me. I looked from my mother, standing in between her brother and my father, talking to distant relatives I didn't know. I felt a tug on my skirt and looked down at Frankie. I looked at him with a sad attempt of a smile as I knelt to his level. “Becca? How come grandma had to go?” He asked, his eyes wide and glistening on his innocent face. I bit my lip, trying not to cry as I wrapped my arm around his back and pulled him closer to me. “Because…well because it was just time for her to go to heaven.” I said, running my fingers through his soft hair. “Do you think he likes it there?” He asked me. I nodded slowly. “I bet she does.” I told him. He smiled. “That’s good.” I stood up and took his hand. “Yea, it is good. Now come on, time to go in.” I said, squeezing the small warm palm I held. We found where the rest of our family was sitting right away and joined them. I kneeled between Kevin and Joe and stared straight ahead. 4 speeches, one hour, and many tears later, I felt Joe reach behind me to tap Kevin’s shoulder. Kevin nodded, and then whispered something to Nick. He looked to our mother, who was sitting next to him, whispering something to her. She wiped a tear from her cheek and nodded, smiling at them. I looked confusedly at Joe as he stood up along with the other two boys and walked past me. He smiled at me as he walked by, but didn't give any sort of explanation. The three of them walked up to the alter, and Joe stood in front of the microphone while Kevin went to get something in the corner-a guitar. Joe cleared his throat, looking to Nick and Kevin. “My brothers and I would like to sing a song for all of you, we wrote it when we um…when we heard about our grandmother, and…it’s called ‘Eternity’.” He said simply before joining Nick and Kevin in the center of the room. Kevin started to play a simple tune, and Joe looked down, tapping his foot slightly, clearing his throat one last time before starting to sing, Nick and Kevin both joining in. “Looking at a picture of you in my hands Wondering if I'm ever gonna see you again Without you I don't know how my life will be But I believe It's not goodbye Cause I will remember you And I will see you again When I rise Cause I know and I believe I will see you in eternity So close yet so far But in my heart you're here with me You did not leave You just went to live in eternity” I felt my mom squeeze my hand and I looked at her, tears were running steadily down her face, but she was smiling. By the end of the song, Nick was the only one still singing, Joe and Kevin had broken down around the middle, and Nick’s voice was shaking, struggling to finish. The crowd of people in the church was silent for a few seconds after it was over, and then erupted into a huge applause. We all hugged each of my brothers as they filed back into our pew. I looked out the stained glass windows, the skies were no longer gray and gloomy, but the sun had come out and was shining brightly through the window and directly onto the casket that lay in the front of the chapel.
im fixing the rest of it a little, itll be up eventually though.

So much had changed since that day months ago. Right now I am sitting in my bedroom, but instead of looking out the window to a small Wyckoff home next door, I am looking at a huge backyard, complete with a swimming pool, next to an even bigger house that you’d think was made for royalty. It was a place where even though it was almost March, the sun was shining and I could go out in shorts and a t-shirt instead of being bundled up for a blizzard. That’s right, the Jonas family had moved to California. “Come in.” I called when someone knocked on my door. “Hey Becca.” I looked up from my magazine and smiled at my mom as she leaned against my desk. “Hey mom.” I replied. “Your father and I have a few emergency errands to run, Frankie’s coming too. We should be back before its time to go, but just incase we aren’t, don't forget the boys have to be at the fair at 3 o’clock sharp, Kevin and Joe are still out, they’ll get themselves there, can you make sure Nick is there on time?” She asked, referring to the concert the Jonas Brothers were having at some fair thing today. “Sure mom.” I said. “Thanks sweetie, we’ll meet you there, Nick’s downstairs now. Directions to the fair are on the kitchen counter. You know where the keys are.” That was another thing that’s changed. I could now legally drive a vehicle known as a ‘car’. And it was great. “K, see you then.” I said, looking back to the magazine as she left the room. Nearly an hour later, just 20 minutes before we would have to get ready to leave, I heard a faint voice calling my name. “Be there in a second Nick.” I called. “Becca!” He said again. I sighed, stopped what I was doing, and followed the voice to the living room. The second I saw him I gasped and ran to his side, kneeling next to the couch where he was laying. “Nick, are you alright?” I asked, panicking as I pushed a few sweaty curls aside to feel his forehead. He didn't have a fever, but his face was pale and sweating and he didn't look good at all. Quickly I rolled his shirt up to his chest and moved both his sleeves to his shoulders. “Where is it?” I asked urgently when all I saw was bare skin. “My room, on the dresser.” He said, his voice quiet and weak. “Don’t move.” I ordered, standing up. “Like I can?” I ignored the comment, instead going straight to the kitchen, where I found a bottle of juice and a cup and brought them back to the living room. “Drink. I’ll be back in a second.” I said. I ran up the stairs two at a time and threw the door to his bedroom open. I saw the small white life saver and grabbed it, opening drawers until I found everything else we might need before running back downstairs. “Why didn't you have this?” I asked, watching as he attached the OmniPod to his upper left arm. He shrugged in response. His doctor had only given it to him a few days before, until then he was still pricking his finger and giving himself insulin shots, but it still wasn’t like him to forget something like this. What was he thinking? “We need to get you to the doctor.” I said sternly, standing up and holding my hands out to help him stand. “I’ll be fine, can we just go to the concert?” He protested. I grabbed my purse of the dining room table and shook my head. “No! Now hurry up.” I led him outside and into the car. “Call mom.” I ordered, pulling out of the driveway. Nick sighed as he obeyed, putting it on speakerphone for me. “Hello?” She said when she picked up the phone, obviously distracted by whatever she was doing. “Mom? We have a problem.” I said. “What's wrong?” She asked. “Nick’s blood sugar is way too low, he drank some apple juice and we’re on our way to the emergency room now, I don't know if we’ll be able to make it to the fair on time, call the guys and let them know.” I said. I could hear panic starting to form in my mother’s voice. “What happened? Nick, are you ok?” She asked. “I’m fine.” He mumbled, staring out the window. “We’ll be there as soon as we can.” I said and hung up the phone. I glanced at Nick from the corner of my eye. “What were you thinking? This thing prevents this from happening, you need to have it with you at all times!” I said, tapping the OmniPod. “I know, I just…forgot.” He said. “How could you forget? What if I hadn't been home? What if you couldn’t make it upstairs or to the phone to call someone, or to the kitchen? You wouldn’t have been able to get your blood sugar back to normal. This is serious Nick, not just some thing we tell you to do to bother you.” I stared straight ahead, the anger rising in my voice. “I know.” Nick said quietly. I glanced at him; he looked so helpless and scared. And yelling at him probably wasn’t helping. I sighed, finding a spot to park in the emergency room parking lot. “You’re going to be ok Little Nicky.” I assured him, using the old name I called him when he was upset. He rolled his eyes, but smiled, and I knew he appreciated it. I smiled too, realizing that the name hardly described him anymore. He was no longer ‘little’, now a good inch taller than me, and his voice had gotten much deeper, so even if you didn't see him, you would never get the impression that he was a little boy. I stopped staring at him and opened the door, stepping out into the parking lot. “Come on, this shouldn’t take long.” I said, waiting for him to get out of the car before taking him inside. Luckily a doctor was able to take him right away, and in just half an hour a familiar curly haired kid walked back into the waiting room. I smiled at him and stood up, happy to get out of the hard uncomfortable chair. After filling out a few forms, we were on our way to the fair. Our mom had called to make sure everything was ok and to let us know that the concert had been delayed. “Are you up for performing?” I asked Nick as we came closer to the fair grounds. He nodded. “I would have been fine without going to that doctor, like I told you.” He said. I knew it was true, it just would have taken a little longer, but I didn't care. “Well you’re ok now, so it doesn’t matter.” I said, parking the car. “You know…they’re going to wonder why you were late.” I said quietly. Nick shrugged. “Traffic.” He said simply. “Joe and Kevin didn't have any traffic problems. And do you really want to lie to your fans?” Nick looked at me. “I’m announcing it in New York in two weeks, that was the plan.” He said. I shrugged. “Announce it now. If you go with your little ‘traffic’ idea, you know things are eventually gonna turn out bad. You're a horrible liar Nick.” I said. He sighed. “I know. I’ll…I’ll talk to Kevin and Joe about it, ok? We’ll see. Let’s just get back there.” He said and opened the door, getting out of the car. He was spotted immediately. “Nick! Nick, over here! Nick!!!” I smiled, watching the young girl run towards us. She couldn’t have been older than 6 or 7. She nearly knocked him over with a huge hug, and as he staggered back, trying to regain his balance, an older girl, closer to Nick’s age, ran up. “Mel, what are you doing? I told you to stay by me!” She said, scolding the kid. She looked up at Nick. “I’m so sorry, my sister’s a huge fan.” She said. The little girl let go of Nick and stared at her sister. “What are you talking about? You’re the one who told me to come over here! You’re the one who goes around all day saying this guy is ‘so hot’ and all that gross stuff.” She said confusedly. I covered my mouth to try to hide the fact I was about to burst out laughing. The older girl blushed, not knowing what to say. Nick smiled. “Well it’s nice to meet both of you.” He said, which made the girl blush even more. I glanced over to the stage where the Jonas Brothers would be performing only to see a frantic Joe waving his arms like a maniac trying to get my attention. Once he saw I was looking, he mouthed ‘get over here NOW!’ I nodded, looking back at Nick, who was happily talking to the girls. “Sorry guys, but Nick really has to get ready for the concert now.” I said, barging in. We said goodbye to the fans, he scribbled a quick autograph, and managed to get backstage without any more girls recognizing him. Joe met us there, urgency in his eyes. “Finally! Where have you been? We have a problem.”
“You’re kidding me. He can’t be!” I insisted, quickly walking down a hallway to the door Joe had pointed out. “Bec, I’ve told you a million times, it’s true. A doctor’s on his way.” He said, jogging to keep up with me. I threw the door open. I saw Kevin sitting on the arm of a couch, and all the other band members surrounding the guy lying there with red splotches all over his skin. It was true. “Garbo, what happened?” I asked, dropping to my knees in front of the sickly bass player. He shrugged, pointing to a bowl of chips sitting on the table. “Peanut oil. The guy said they were peanut free, so I ate them.” He said, his voice quiet and raspy, like it was a struggle just to say that much. I sighed, stood up, and turned to everyone else. “So what are you going to do?” I asked, knowing exactly what they had in mind. Kevin stood, picking up Garbo’s guitar from where it was leaning against the wall. He held it out in front of me, a look of hope in his eyes. “Bec?” He asked. I shook my head. “No way, absolutely not.” I said, folding my arms across my chest. I got a chorus of ‘come on!’s and ‘please Rebecca?’s from everyone. I felt a hand close around my arm and soon found myself being pulled out into the hallway. “Let go of me Joe, I can’t do it!” I said, trying to pull my wrist away. He did let go, but grabbed my arms, backing me up against the wall and standing firmly in front of me so I couldn’t escape. “Rebecca, look at me.” He said, quietly but firmly, still holding my shoulders. Giving in, I looked up at him, instantly regretting it. I knew that once I looked, I wouldn’t be able to break the eye contact until he said what he had to say; he had always had that power over me. “We need you Bec, you know that. We could easily cancel the whole show all together, after delaying it for an hour and a half, but we don't have to. Because we have an amazing replacement right here, one who knows every one of our songs, who’s played them with our real bass player tons of times before.” He said. “Yea, but I can’t go up there! Maybe a couple years ago when less than a hundred kids showed up, but that’s obviously not what's going on today, there’s already hundreds of fans out there, and you don't go on until 5!” I argued. Joe nodded. “Exactly. Already hundreds of fans, plus more that aren’t even here yet. We can’t let them all down, Becca. I’ll be there. Kevin will be there. Nick will be there. Mom, dad, and Frankie will all be in the audience, just focus on them. I’ll stand right next to you the entire time if you want me to.” He pleaded. Suddenly he seemed to remember something. “Come here.” He said, going back into the room. I followed him to where everyone’s stuff was sitting, and watched as he unzipped a small pocket on his backpack. He pulled something out, closed his hand around it, and went back into the hall. “What’s that?” I asked, catching up to him. He smiled. “Close your eyes.” He said. I hesitated, then did. He put something around my neck. “Open.” I looked down and saw a small blue plastic kazoo hanging on a green string. I smiled. “Wear it. Play it. It’ll be just like before.” Joe said, pausing to let me remember. I thought back to all the nights spent in the boys’ room, back when Joe and I were only 11, Nick 8, and Kevin 13. I was able to picture clearly in my mind Kevin playing his guitar, me joining in on bass, Nick making up crazy lyrics as we went along, and Joe dancing around the room like a maniac with a kazoo identical to mine, but in green with a blue string, humming away. We had given up our ice cream money to go buy those kazoos at the dollar store, and I was amazed that he had kept them all these years. “So…?” Joe asked, eyebrows raised. I sighed, grinning. “When’s lockdown start?” I asked. Joe’s face lit up like a child’s on Christmas morning and he gave a huge hug, completely lifting me off the ground. When we entered the room again, Nick was sitting by the table, pencil in his hand, tapping it nervously on the table. “I don't know what I’m gonna say! I was going to work on that during the next two weeks and have a whole little speech ready, now what am I going to do?” He asked, hitting the pencil so hard on the table I thought it might break. “What are you talking about?” Joe asked. “He insists on telling everyone about his diabetes today.” Kevin explained. A nervous kid giving an unplanned speech, the usual bassist replaced by a 17 year old girl who had never played in front of anyone except her family, and hundreds, probably thousands, of teenage girls expecting a normal Jonas Brothers concert. This should be interesting.
The next 45 minutes were intense. I sat there playing the same songs over and over again with Kevin while Joe and Nick warmed up their voices and whatnot. “Jonas Brothers to the stage, you’re on in 10.” We heard the voice over the loudspeaker say. Panic overwhelmed me, thinking of all the people I was about to get up in front of. “You’re going to be fine.” Kevin said reassuringly, smiling at me as we got up to join the others. Before I knew it, we were standing on a stage facing tons of people. I felt pretty stupid being the only one with sheet music in front of me, but I would have felt stupider if I forgot one of the songs. “Hey guys!” The screams got louder as Nick started to speak. “Sorry for the delay, I couldn’t get here on time because…well, I’ll get into that a little later.” He said. “Until then…wait a minute, Joe? Who’s that?” Kevin continued, pointing confusedly at me. I rolled my eyes instinctively at my brother, hoping no one noticed. “This is kazoo girl!!” Joe yelled, jumping around, once again, having the 5 year old on Christmas look on his face. He got many confused ‘what's wrong with this guy?’ looks from the audience, so he calmed down and gave a proper, or at least more normal, introduction. We got through the first songs without any major mess-ups, which was a good sign. “You ready?” Joe asked as we all gathered at the back of the stage to get a quick sip of water between numbers. There was only one song left to perform, he had to do it soon. Nick shrugged. “I don't know what to say!” He said. “You’ll do fine.” Kevin told him, putting a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Just…talk. These girls love you, they’ll listen to whatever you have to say.” I said, thinking about the many fans I had met since they started the band. Nick nodded, screwing the cap back on his water bottle and walking back to his mike. The rest of us went back to our own spots and Nick glanced at each of us before starting. Kevin started playing his guitar quietly, and I quickly picked up the tune and joined him. “So real quick, how many of you out there have diabetes, raise you hand.” Nick said. I watched as a few people put their hands up. Nick looked them over for a few seconds before raising his own hand. I saw many confused expressions in the audience, and heard a few people gasp and say things like ‘what?’ Nick went on to explain how it all started, showed everyone the OmniPod that earlier that day helped save his life. After just a couple short minutes, it seemed all his nervousness and uncertainness of his speech went away, and he went on talking naturally, getting very sympathetic reactions from the fans in front of him. As soon as he was done, he smiled at Kevin, Joe, and me and announced the final song. The crowd went absolutely wild as it ended, and I swear it couldn’t have gotten any louder as the four of us stepped to the front of the stage, grabbed hands, and bowed.
But that was all years ago. 10 in a few months, to be exact. And even now, holding the picture snapped at that exact moment when my brothers and I were up on that stage, holding hands, arms raised, and huge smiles, it felt just like it was yesterday. I smiled, looking down at the framed photograph in my hands. There was Joe, crazy Joe. I would be going out to see him this summer, to celebrate our 28th birthday. I was thrilled to get to spend a week with him and his gorgeous wife, who believe it or not started out as just another fan. It happened just like in those stories I used to read about the boys online, the girl goes to a meet and greet, one of them, in this case Joe, falls for her, she leaves, he goes on to the next stop on the tour, and years later they spontaneously bump into each other at some random place and start talking, and after a while, well, I guess you can figure that out. Anyways, they now live happily with their adorable 3-year-old son. I looked back to the picture, moving my eyes past Joseph to Nick. Little Nicky. He wasn’t married, concentrating first on finishing college, just like I was. He tells me all the time about getting noticed on the street every now and then by old fans, even now the most recognized out of the three of them. Then there was Kevin, also happily married with the sweetest 6-year-old daughter you ever saw. He was also becoming very successful with his new career, a music teacher at an elementary school, with his own after school guitar program. Frankie had grown up to be just like his brothers, graduating high school this year back in Wyckoff, where he and my parents had later gone back to. Looking at the picture one last time before placing it back on my night table, I smiled. I don’t see them as often now, most of the time just for the holidays, and in the past we might have had our fights, our tears, but there was one thing that would never change, and that I’m glad for. Through the good times and the bad, I am, always have been, and always will be the one and only Jonas Sister.
