Oh my gosh, it has been so long since I've posted a new chapter! So sorry guys! But, to make it up to you, here's chapter 20


'Smile'

Joyce and Miley hugged each other for a good 10 minutes, until Joe came running in, followed by his brothers, who had tried to slow him down, but failed...

"Joe, seriously dude, take a chill pill!", Nick said to his slightly frantic brother.

When Joe saw the tear stains on Joyce's face, he lost it completely.

He ran to her side, putting his hand on Joyce's shoulder.

"Baby, are you okay? What happened? Are you in pain? Should I get the doctor? Can you breathe okay?" He ranted.

Nick took Joe by the shoulders and pulled him away from the hospital bed.

Joyce turned slightly, still one arm around her best friend's shoulders.

"Joe, Sweety, you have to stop worrying so much. Miley and I just had a really emotional talk. That's why I have tears in my eyes and that's why my face probably looks all big and poofy right now. I am perfectly fine, Honey, okay?" Joyce gave Joe the most reassuring smile she possibly could, but she couldn't get the image of Joe in the bathroom with all the pills out of her head.

She knew she was going to have to tell him about her mom; he deserved to know.

The next few days, Joyce spent doing Physiotherapy and reading to the kids in the Pediatrics ward and just spending time with them.

Miley was with her every day.

The boys had to go out of town for a few days and it had been a real struggle to get Joe to let go of Joyce and out of the room.

He had called Joyce's room only 5 minutes after they had left, once again asking question after question about how Joyce was feeling: no chest pains, no nausea, dizzyness, ...

Joyce and Miley had had a real chuckle during the conversation, because Nick and Joe were bickering at each other and it was extremely funny.

The girls were on their way back to Joyce's room when the mother of one of the kids they had been visiting the past few days stopped them.

"Hi, girls, I'm sorry to disturb you, but I would just like to thank you both for what you have done for my little girl. She has just been so happy since you 2 started coming here to see the kids on the ward."

"Well, thank you ma'am, but... We really didn't do anything." Miley said.

"Yeah, I mean, all we did was come here and read stories and pay each kid a short visit. It's really our pleasure to do that." Joyce added.

The woman continued.

"Oh, but you have done so much more than just read stories. You girls have given these kids hope and joy. Take my daughter for instance. I haven't seen her smile in such a long time and now..."

She choked up for a second.

"She just can't stop smiling. She adores you girls and it means so much to her and all the kids here that you would make time for them."

Miley and Joyce were touched by the woman's words and were quiet the whole way back to Joyce's room.

When they got to the room, Joyce said she had an idea.

Chapter 21 - Smile (part 2) --> UPDATED!!!


Joyce sat down on her hospital bed and Miley followed her example.

'Okay, spill it, J.' Miley said.

Joyce looked at Miley, kind of confused.

'Your idea...', She reminded her.

'Oh, right!'

Joyce's face completely lit up with excitement.

'Okay, so I was thinking...'

Miley nudged Joyce with her elbow to get her to continue.

'If the kids here are already so happy to see 2 of their favorite DC stars... What would happen if oh I don't know, 20 of them showed up all at once?'

Miley was beginning to get where this was going.

'You want to come visit the kids with a bunch of DC stars?'

Joyce nodded.

'We could do something special, like do a special acoustic set with their favorite songs and we could play games with them, read stories, ... And we could also pay personal visits to the kids that are too sick to come down.'

'That sounds like a great idea. We should definetly go see the hospital director about this.' Miley answered.

The girls pitched their idea to the HD (= hospital director) and he was absolutely thrilled about it.

'That is a great idea girls. The kids here are all fans of DC, they really look up to all of you.' Said the HD.

'We love to meet our fans, Sir. And since our fans can't come to us, we would be more than happy to come to them.' Answered Joyce, with Miley nodding in agreement.



About a week later, after Joyce was released from hospital, the girls were at the sound stage in the Disney Studios in LA.

They were there filming stuff for Disney's Friends For Change, along with a bunch of other DC stars.

'Okay, guys, ready? Aaaaaaaaaand... ACTION!' The director said.

For a few hours they filmed promos, interviews, behind the scenes stuff and much more.

After lunch, the entire group of DC stars would head out to the hospital to surprise the kids there.

Joyce was sitting on a couch, tired from the filming.

She had only been working again since a few days ago and felt completely out of shape.

She saw Joe walk up to her, looking handsome as ever in his dark blue jeans and blue t-shirt.

'Hello Beautiful', he said as he sat down next to her and placed a soft kiss on her lips.

'How are you feeling?' He asked her.

Joyce laughed.

'What?' Joe asked as he sat down next to her.

'You've been asking me that for the past 2 weeks.' Joyce answered.

'Well, I worry about you, Baby. You don't understand what it's like to watch the woman you love fight for her life.' Joe said looking down.

Joyce felt sorry for making Joe relive the time he spent by her hospital bed; the images of Joe that her mom showed her came flooding back, making her head hurt.

She readjusted herself in the couch, putting her legs up on Joe's lap and snuggling up against his chest.

'I'm sorry, Babe', she said. 'I didn't mean to upset you.'

Joe wrapped his arms around Joyce and she could feel him kiss her hair and resting his cheek against her head.

'It's okay, J. It's just... I felt so powerless just sitting there not being able to do anything. I just don't want you to overdo things.'

Joyce was silent for a moment, until she answered: 'You're a great guy, Joseph Adam Jonas, you know that?'

She smiled up at him and gently kissed his lips.

'Oh get a room you 2', Demi, Miley and Selena said as they walked up to them.

'It's time to go, guys. We've got to be at the hospital in a half an hour.' Miley added.

Joyce and Joe got up, getting their things from the dressing room and then joining the entire gang outside in the parking lot, where a coach bus was picking them up.


The ride on the bus was a lot of fun, with everyone singing and laughing the whole way.

As soon as they got to the hospital, Joyce and Miley got off the bus and headed inside and over to the Pediatrics wing of the hospital.

The others stayed behind a little bit, until Miley would give them a signal that they could come in.

Joyce was superexcited about the afternoon they had planned together with the HD and Disney: Joyce and Miley would go there to visit the kids. The kids that were well enough would be assembled in the large sun room, waiting for the 2 girls to arrive. They would go in and talk to the kids for a bit, then they would announce that they had a surprise. Miley would go open the double doors separating the sun room from a maintenance entrance on the far side of the room. The others would walk in and they would do a bit of a Q&A session. After that, they would split up, visiting the kids that couldn't be with the rest of them, talking to the kids individually, singing some songs, signing some autographs and things like that.

As they entered the Pediatrics wing, Joyce got even more excited and was determined to give these kids an afternoon they would never forget.
