this is my FAVORITE one-shot.
enjoy!
(you dont have to listen to the song as you read. i just put it so you knew which one! lol)
Kevin pulled on the frilly collar on his suite and glanced around the huge ballroom. He grunted. Why did he let Nick talk him into this?
“Normally I don’t say this...” Kevin had said, hours before as he looked at the mirror. “But this looks...”
“Gay?” Joe had offered, laughing at his brother’s and his own ensemble.
Kevin glanced at him. “No...just...flamboyant.”
The two brothers heard Nick’s laugh as he entered the room. They all three were dressed in old-fashioned suites worthy of “Pride and Prejudice.”
A grin appeared on Nick’s face. “Don’t worry, guys. This will be fun!”
Joe rolled his eyes. “Yes..a whole night pretending it’s 1813! I’m up for trying new things...but I don’t know about this ball.”
Nick put his arms around each of his brother’s shoulders and they all stared in the mirror. They all wore white long-sleeve undershirts with ‘frilly’ white collars, a black jacket and pants that stopped a little under their knees, and they wore white tights and old-dance shoes.
Nick grinned. “This will be a fun night.”
Joe wriggled his eyebrows and Kevin just gave a laugh.
“Yup..”
“Sure..”
Nick rolled his eyes. “Anyway...carriage is here.” He said, dragging his older brother’s out the room.
“You mean Limo, right?” Joe asked, grabbing his cell phone.
“No,” Nick said, taking Joe’s phone and throwing it on the bed. “I mean carriage.”
“Of course you did..” Kevin muttered as they walked down the stairs.
“I heard that.” Nick said, stopping at the mirror to make sure his collar was right.
“I didn’t try to hide it.” Kevin replied, shrugging.
Nick shook his head and dragged his brothers out the door.
So here Kevin stood, in a grand ballroom standing alone in a corner. He wasn’t going to pretend this wasn’t amazing...because it was. The ballroom was huge, people dressed up and dancing to the few men in the corner playing all kinds of instruments. There were ‘servants’ serving people everywhere, guys were dancing with girls, and the ones who weren’t dancing were eyeing their next potential partner. The moment they got there, Joe had instantly spotted his girlfriend and ran up to her and they did this...corny yet romantic act as if they never knew each other. It made Kevin wanna throw up. Only because right after Selena came up to Nick and they acted like they didn’t know each other, and they skipped off to the dance floor and began waltzing with the other couples. Kevin sighed. Being single for over a year wasn’t fun at ALL. Kevin folded his arms and sighed again. A man walked by him and held up a tray with wine in glasses.
“May I offer you a glass, sir?” He asked, giving a small bow.
Kevin shrugged. He turned 21 last month. Why not? He nodded, picked up a glass and took a sip. The man nodded again, and walked off. Kevin glanced around. Everyone seemed so happy, so content. He took another sip of the white wine. Smacking his lips and rocking back and forth on his feet, he glanced around one more time. He then slowly circled the ballroom. The Ball tonight was a charity event. Tons of famous and rich people auctioned for tickets to come, and all the proceeds went to The United People’s Relief. And since it was Christmas, holly and mistletoe and Christmas decorations were everywhere. And the head of the event, made it a ‘Jane Austen’ theme. When hearing about it, Kevin was actually excited. But then when he realized that it was a ball where they was typically dancing with a partner..he wasn’t so enthused. Nick had Selena, Joe had Taylor, and he was alone. But he decided to put on a smile and just go along with it. Walking around, he passed a few girls who began giggling and smiling at him. There was one girl with about three girls surrounding her. They all whispered as he walked by, and she shook her head and turned red. One rolled her eyes and pushed her in front of Kevin.
“Hi.” He said, taken aback.
She turned scarlet red. “Hi.” She was actually very beautiful. She was shorter than him, by about 5 inches at least. She had curly red hair and bright green eyes. Her dress was gorgeous, too. It was gold, and it had long sleeves and a puffy skirt, and her neck line came down just enough to expose her breast, but not to much.
Kevin smiled. “Hi.” He repeated.
She kept turning red. “I’ve been watching you..” She said slowly, as her friends began to giggle and whisper behind her. She quickly glanced back to glare, then she turned her head to him and gave a small smile.
“You’ve been watching me?” Kevin playfully accused.
She nodded. “You seem...distracted.”
Kevin laughed. “I wish.”
She nervously glanced at the dance floor, then back at him. “Would you..like to dance with me?”
Kevin couldn’t say no to those big green eyes. He had a feeling she was extremely young..but dancing would be fun. He put his wine glass on a tray that passed by. He then turned to her and bowed and held out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
At this point, she and her friends lost it. Her friends began to giggle uncontrollably and she blushed again.
“Mhm!” She said, unable to say anything. She took his hand and he lead her to the dance floor. He then bowed to her as the music started, and she curtsied. They then began to slowly circle each other and they began to dance the dance.
“How do you know this?” She whispered to him, trying to keep up.
Kevin winked and she blushed. “I’m following the crowd.” he whispered back. The gentleman began twirling th ladies, so Kevin copied with his partner.
“I’m Kevin.” He said, when he lead her to face him and as he put his hand on her waist.
She beamed. “I know. I love your music and..”
“Ah,” Kevin held up a finger. “Tonight I’m simply Kevin.”
“Oh.” She said, smiling fading.
“But, thank you.” He replied and her face lit up again.
“What is your name?” Kevin asked, glancing around to see what the next move was. Turns out it was weaving in and out with other dance partners. While weaving in and out, she looked at him.
“I’m Emily.” She said as they began dancing with each other again.
“That is a really pretty name.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re a really good dancer.” She said, smiling.
“Why thanks.”
Emily stopped dancing. “No..thank you.”
Kevin raised his eyebrows.
“For dancing with me.” She said. “My friends said you wouldn’t even give me the time of day.”
He glanced over to her friends and they all gave a girly wave. Kevin nodded his head then looked back at her.
“You know why, right?”
“Why?” Emily asked, looking up at him.
He took her hand and began twirling her around. “Because you’re beautiful and you look amazing tonight..and they’re all jealous that they don’t look half as good or mature as you.”
Emily blushed, and Kevin continued. He gave a goofy smile. “Speaking of which...how old are you?”
“Fifteen.” Emily replied. “You’re the first boy to dance with me tonight. Every time some guy asked me to dance, at least one of my friends said my age and they ran for the hills.”
Kevin cocked his head. “Why are you hanging with them tonight?”
Emily sighed. “Because one of the girl’s is friends with a famous celebrity and they got a lot of tickets. She invited me and my sister. But turns out they just invite me so THEY would look better I guess...”
Kevin twirled her around so her back was touching his stomach. They swayed back and forth following the crowd. Kevin once again glanced at Emily’s group of friends. When they smiled, he glared.
“How do you know that?” He asked, still glaring at them. He twirled Emily back around to him and she put her hand on his shoulder and he held onto her.
Emily gave a laugh. “Because one of them basically told me. My sister has been having a much better time then me. I haven’t had any fun since I got here...”
“Same with me.” Kevin said, as the song ended. “My brother’s are having a lot of fun and I haven’t been having any fun...”
“Oh..” Emily said. She nodded. “Well I’ll let you get back to your own thing..” She turned around and began to walk away. As the music began playing again, Kevin laughed and grabbed her hand and began dancing with her.
‘You didn’t let me finish.” He smiled. “I mean I haven’t been having any fun til NOW. You’re the one who’s making this night rather enjoyable for me.”
Emily blushed. “Thank you, Kevin.”
“I mean it.” He said, as they both raised their palms to touch each other. They both began circling each other. “Oh, and you can tell those girls that I said you look wonderful tonight and you are the best dancer partner I’ve ever had. And for you, Emily..don’t worry about them. They are just jealous. And inviting you didn’t make them look good..it made them just look ordinary next to you.”
Emily quickly wiped a tear from her eye. “Why can’t I be 6 years older?”’
They switched palms and began circling the other way. Kevin smiled. “Don’t wish away you’re life so fast. Don’t worry. Soon you’ll be my age and wish you were 15 again.”
Emily smiled up at him. “Where are all the good guys like you, Kevin?”
He smiled down at her. “I promise one will find you, Em. I promise.”
Emily smiled again. “Thank you, Kevin. But sometimes I wish I was as old as my sister. She’s eighteen and everyone loves her.”
Kevin gave a sympatric smile. “I promise. It’ll happen soon.”
They dance together until the song ended, and everyone began to clap. Emily curtsied and Kevin gave a bow. He then leaned down and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for being my dance partner, Emily.”
She blushed. “You’re welcome, Kevin!”
He winked and bowed again. He was about to turn around, when Emily blurted, “Can I get a picture?”
He glanced back at her and she blushed. “I would like to remember this night. And..I truly do love your music. I have every CD and I’ve been to three of your concerts.”
Kevin smiled. “Of course.”
He then put his hand on the small of her back and lead her over to the side. She grabbed her purse and whipped out her camera. Getting a glare from one of them head people in charge of tonight, she mouthed ‘Just one picture!’
He nodded and walked on. Kevin laughed as he took the camera from Emily and took a few pictures with her. He then gave her a hug. “It was nice meeting you, Em.”
“You too, Kevin Jonas.” Emily said, beaming.
“I hop to bump into you again, soon?”
“Oh yes, defiantly!” She breathed.
“Save the last dance for me?” Kevin begged, smiling.
“Oh of course!”
Kevin bowed again. Glancing to his left, he smiled. “There’s a guy checking you out.”
Emily turned red. “Really?” She blurted. “Who? Where is he? Is he cute?”
Kevin laughed. “He’s walking this way..”
A moment later, a boy came up to Emily. He smiled. “I’ve been watching you..and I told myself I had to meet the pettiest girl here...”
“You’ve been watching me?” Emily accused, smiling.
Kevin smiled and backed up a bit.
He nodded. “I was wondering...would you like to dance? I’m Charlie, by the way.”
“I’m Emily..” She said, blushing. Kevin began to walk away. “And I would love, too.”
“I was hoping you would say that. How old are you?”
Kevin stopped, and turned to look at them.
“Fifteen...” Emily replied, slowly.
Charlie smiled and took her hand. “I’m seventeen. Now I want that dance you promised.”
Emily glanced over Charlie’s shoulder and she locked eyes with Kevin. He gave an I-told-you-so look and smiled at her. She gave a little wave as Charlie lead her to the dance floor.
Kevin watched them as they began to dance, and he smiled. He then went and stood by the side lines and watched all the couples dancing. He saw Nick and Selena, Joe and Taylor, Emily and Charlie having a blast. He smiled, then he sighed again. About two dances later, Emily skipped over to him.
“He’s going to get us drinks!” She squeaked.
Kevin laughed.
“Oh Kevin he’s amazing!” She breathed.
“I told you so.” Kevin said, smiling.
She giggled. “I can’t wait to tell my sister!” She whipped around and saw someone. “There she is!”She dashed away from Kevin and in a second she was standing in front of a girl. Kevin glanced around to look for her, and when he saw her, his heart stopped. He saw the girl Emily was standing next to. Kevin froze. She was....beautiful. She was about an inch taller then Emily, with long gorgeous brown curly hair. Her blue eyes sparkled in the light. Her dress looked liked Emily’s, except that it was a bit more mature. It was gold and white, with lace and trim. The skirt was big and flowing, but the waist was tiny. Kevin’s eyes traveled up and he stopped on her neckline. He came far enough to see, but he stopped high enough to make Kevin’s head spin. He couldn’t breath. She was...an angel. Her soft pink lips curved into a smile as Emily told her something. Kevin took a few steps closer, then he stopped. His body wouldn’t like him go any father. Emily chatted away and her sister looked up, caught Kevin’s eyes and she froze. Slowly, Kevin walked towards her. Emily noticed this, and she quickly excused herself to go off and find Charlie.
Kevin stared. “Hello...”
Emily’s sister blink. “Hi.”
“I’m K-kevin.” The words stumbled out.
“Danielle.” She replied, giving a smile.
They both glanced at Emily across the room.
“She’s quiet a person.” Kevin said.
“She is..I love her to death.” Danielle agreed.
Kevin gulped. “Would you like to take a walk with me?”
She looked at him and took his hand. “I’d love to.”
They walked in silence until they walked out onto the huge balcony. Kevin jumped. “It’s SNOWING!”
Danielle laughed. “Are we still in L.A.?”
Kevin cocked his head. “I think so...”
Danielle smiled. “It was made.”
“Oh..” Kevin blushed.
She walked over and sat down on a bench. “It’s a really pretty night.”
Kevin sat down next to her. “It really is..you look...beautiful tonight. Well, I’m sure you ALWAYS look beautiful.”
“Thank you. You don’t look half bad yourself, Kevin Jonas.”
“No fair. I don’t know you’re last name.” Kevin joked.
“It’s Vanderbelt.”
“That’s a mouthful.”
She giggled. “It is, isn’t it?”
Kevin looked around. “I can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve..”
“Been a good boy this year?”
“Huh? Oh..yeah. I sure hope so! I’m asking Santa for a new guitar. What about you?”
Danielle shrugged. “I don’t know..I haven’t really thought about it.”
“Ah..”
The music started up again. Kevin stood up and held out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
Danielle smiled and stood up. “Yes you may.”
Kevin lead her to the middle of the balcony and they began dancing. Snow fell down upon them, but neither was cold. Kevin twirled her around as they swayed back and forth to the music. Time seemed to slow down as they looked into each other’s eyes. Kevin’s heart skipped a beat every time she smiled. When the song ended, they stood there, Kevin still holding her in his arms.
Neither of them spoke for a moment. After a while, Kevin coughed. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
He looked at her, and she looked at him. They locked eyes.
“Do you believe in love at first sight?”
Danielle glanced up and smiled. “Can I ask you something?” She asked, blushing.
“Sure.” He replied, looking down at her.
“Do you follow the rules?”
Kevin raised his eyebrows. She pointed up. Kevin glanced up and smiled. Mistletoe. He looked down at her. As a smile appeared on his lips, he said. “Do you?”
She closed her eyes and smiled. “Just kiss me.” She whispered. Kevin put his hand on her cheek and rubbed it with his thumb. He leaned in, then paused to smile at her. She opened her eyes and smiled back. He leaned in closer, then gave a soft laugh. His eyes traveled to her eyes, then her lips. Pulling her closer, his lips soft met hers as he kissed her. She pulled away and smiled up at him. He returned the gesture, then his lips met hers again. This time, his tongue parted her lips and met her own. She giggled in his mouth and pulled away again.
“Isn’t french-kissing on the first kiss against the dating rules?”
Kevin kissed away a snowflake on her nose. He smiled. “As my little brother said, ‘I don’t play by the rules.’”
Danielle giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck. She closed her eyes and smiled against his lips. “In that case, I’m glad.”
Kevin smiled and kissed her again as their heart beats danced to the sound of the music and the snow fell down upon them, surrounded them with the happiest night of their lives.
They all would remember this night would the rest of their lives. Tonight would be the night where Joe and Taylor figured out they had a knack for ball-room dancing; Nick and Selena parted ways on a good note; Charlie losing interest in Emily when he realized his ex girlfriend had broken up with Nick Jonas; and Emily and Nick meeting, realizing that they weren’t upset about their other partners were dancing together when Nick took her hand and asked for the last dance, and Kevin and Danielle discovered something great came out of a silly little ball on Christmas Eve.
A couple of years later, at their wedding when asked the question “How did this all happen?”
Kevin could smile and reply, “It’s all thanks to Nick, Emily..and Frilly collars and white tights.”
The End.
Hope you liked it
