I came home early to see you
Couldn't wait to hold you
I've been away for so long now....
"We're here!!!" Those were the two words that Kevin had been dying to hear for the last three hours. He jumped up, almost falling over as he did so, grabbed his bag and ran into his family home. He heard his brothers laughing and teasing him behind him but he didn't care. His thoughts were fixed on her. Erin. His Erin. He was so happy that they were able to come back a day early from their tour but instead of telling her he decided to wait and surprise her with a romantic evening on the beach. He couldn't wait to hold her in his arms again after being apart for the last 2 months. They had been together for a little over a year and they shared a deep, real love. Kevin felt his heart beat pick up as he thought about her and hurriedly changed his clothes and got himself together.
"Tonight is going to be amazing." He said to his reflection as he straighted out his black and red vest that he wore over a plain, white dress shirt. He smiled as he picked up his keys and walked out of his room.
"Leaving already?" He turned to see his Mom standing in the hallway. She winked at him, "Don't worry, hun. I knew you were doing this. Go have fun and don't be out too late, ok?"
"Yep. Love you, Mom." Kevin said as he kissed his Mom on the cheek. He turned and within seconds was out the door and on his way.
Kevin pulled into her apartment complex and he felt his stomach tie in knots. Would she be home? Would she be ok that he surprised her like this? He suddenly found himself second guessing what he was doing. He parked in front of her building and sat there for a second thinking.
"I should have gotten her something, dangit." He said out loud to himself. He sat there, with his hands resting on the steering wheel, wondering if he should just take the chance and go up to her place. He looked up and saw the light in her living room flip on. He smiled, she was home after all. He slowly made his way out of his car and up to her door....
But as I walked through the doorway
My heart was shattered
To find that you're not alone...
He went to knock on her door when he saw it was slightly cracked. His smile faded, had she seen him and left it like this on purpose? He sighed and decided to just go ahead and go in. He slowly pushed the door open, stepped into her foyer and heard her giggle. He loved that sound and the smile was instantly back on his face. He walked into the living room and that's when his whole world came crashing down. Erin was home but she wasn't alone. She was on her couch and in the arms of another guy who she was in the midst of kissing quite passionately. He cleared his throat which caused her to jump up and gasp.
"K-Kevin?" She asked, shock written all over her face. He stood there staring at her as his heart sank to his toes. He had no reason to suspect anything like this had been going on but, then again, the last month or so she had been harder and harder to get ahold of. He shook his head as he finally found his voice.
"I came to surprise you case we got home a day early....but I guess the surprise is for me, huh?" He turned quickly and ran out of her apartment as she yelled after him. He didn't give her a chance to respond because there was nothing she could say that would be good enough. He jumped in his car and began pulling out just as she reached the sidewalk in front of the parking lot. He saw her frantically yelling for him out of his rear view mirror as the tears began to form in his eyes.
When will I break into pieces?
It's your mistake, I finally see that
Everything I thought was you was a lie
Now you left love dying
It's in the arms of a stranger...
The scene just kept repeating over and over again in his head. Her soft, brown hair being played with with hands that weren't his. Her lips being kissed by someone that wasn't him. Her giggle, which only he got, was being given to another man. He slammed his hands onto the steering wheel as he stopped at a red light. He had no idea where he was but he just had to get as far away from her as possible. With as mad as he was at her he was more mad at himself for not seeing what was going on. This was why she hadn't been easy to get ahold of like she used to be. This was why she had suddenly become a bit more jealous of all the attention he got. His thoughts were interrupted by her ringtone going off for the tenth time since he left. He quickly silenced it and began to drive as the light turned green.
'Ok...I really need to stop.' Kevin found himself completely lost and frustrated. He pulled over into a parking lot for what looked like a mall and turned the engine off. He had to cool himself down before he even tried to find out where he was and how to get home but the more he thought about what had happened he got more and more angry. What did he do that was so wrong? True, being gone a lot wasn't easy and they both knew that but they had committed to each other and he had always told her that if she wanted out to talk to him about it. She would always tell him that he was crazy, that she loved him and that she had no plans of giving up on them. He would always call or text her when he had a free moment and lately she either wouldn't answer or respond for hours and when she did she'd say she was busy with work stuff or just didn't hear her phone. But the Erin he knew always kept her phone with her. That's when it hit him....it wasn't his fault at all. He didn't lie to her, he wasn't going behind her back and he certainly wasn't even THINKING about being with any other girl. She betrayed him and killed the love they had in those few moments he saw her wrapped up with another man's arms. The tears he had sitting in his eyes for the past hour or so now finally found their way down his cheeks. He layed his head down on his arms which were resting on the steering wheel as he finally felt his heart fall into pieces.
The days just seem so much longer
Now that I'm without you
It never seems to get better...
Kevin sat in the kitchen of the Jonas house sipping on a coffee as he flipped through a magazine. He had been up all night for the second night in a row and it showed. He had dark rings under his eyes and the spark he used to have was gone. He couldn't sleep because every time he tried he'd see her with the stranger or he'd see a memory of them and it just kept him awake. It had been three days since they had gotten home and he had gotten his 'surprise' but it had felt like longer. When he had finally gotten home that night everyone but Nick was asleep and he knew something had gone horribly wrong. He had tried to get Kevin to talk but he refused and Nick just let it go. When Kevin wanted everyone to know, they'd know.
"Morning." Nick said as he walked into the kitchen, still in his pajamas. He sat down across from his brother and watched as he mindlessly flipped through the magazine backwards. He could tell that he had had another sleepless night and was really starting to worry about him. After a few moments Kevin finally looked up and nodded at him. Nick sighed, "So has she still tried to call you?" Again Kevin nodded and Nick finally took the magazine away from him.
"Well you should at least tell her it's over and have the final say in all this. Tell her how much it hurt, tell her whatever you need to tell her so that I can have my brother back." Nick said as Kevin finally looked up and into his younger brother's eyes. He saw the pain and concern and felt himself go numb.
"I think she knows, Nick. I just want this all to go away. I want the days to go back to normal and for things to get better. But I don't know if they will...." He trailed off as he ran his hands through his curls.
"You're not going to get any better if you don't at least make an attempt to tell her. How can you make those first steps to heal if you just let it all hang open like it is?" He reached over and placed his hand on Kevin's arm, "Things will get better in time, I promise you. Eventually there will come a day where you can think of the good times with Erin and be ok. Until then you have all of us to help you. We love you, man." Nick stood as he patted him on the back and handed him his cell phone.
"Call her, Kev."
I'll try to hold it together
And I can't wait for
The day you fade from my memory....
It had been a month since the day he called her. It was a difficult conversation but Nick had been right. He was able to get out how he felt and it helped him take the first small steps in dealing with the hurt and anger he had. It still bothered him but he was able to keep himself together so that no one really knew he was still dealing with it. All he wanted was for her to finally be out of his head and heart. He wanted the memories to stop. He wanted the constant reminders of her to be gone. If only he could have that part of him removed things would be so much easier.
"Kev?" He turned at the sound of his name to see Joe standing behind him. They were in Florida on a promotional stop and they were currently in the Disney Channel's offices waiting for a meeting with some higher ups about a new movie possibility.
"Yeah?"
"I just wanted to tell you how proud of you I am." Joe smiled his little lopsided smile as Kevin felt his heart warm up for the first time in a long time. He returned his brothers smile, "Thanks Joe....that really means a lot."
"Just know we're here, ok?" Kevin nodded as Joe turned back to what his Mother was doing. He sat down in a chair in the waiting room ad he decided to go through some pictures on his phone. He grinned as he saw photos of his family and friends, the people that truly mattered to him. He was almost at the end when one of him and Erin came up on the screen. It had been taken about seven months ago when she had flown out to see him perform at Madison Square Garden. They were on the stage itself after their sound check and she just wrapped her arm around him and snapped the picture. He saw the smiles on their faces and was surprised by the fact that he didn't feel anything. He sat there debating for a moment to delete the picture or not.
"I'm surprised you still have that." He looked up to see Nick sitting next to him.
"Me too. I didn't know I did." He sighed as he erased it. Nick saw the look in his brothers eyes and felt himself smile a bit inwardly.
"Little steps, Kevin." He nodded his head, "Well that was more like a giant step." Nick chuckled, "Ok, you got me there." Kevin smiled, he finally felt like he was going to be ok and that he would, in time, be able to move on and find someone who wouldn't end up in the arms of a stranger.
Now you left love dying
