"Nicky, come on!" Kevin's voice was calling from the end of the street.
It was Nick's first day at school and he had engraved his trust in his brothers Kevin, ten, and Joe, nine, to take care of him. Nick was only five but he was smart enough to know that having brothers to protect you was a smart idea.
His birthday was in a week and he couldn't wait to be six years old. Joe had turned nine a few weeks back and Kevin was going to be eleven in two months. Nick knew both of their birthdays and had even bought them a present. He had bought Joe a shirt which said "Drama King", which Joe liked a lot, and he had also bought Kevin some sunglasses. He was a sweet little boy.
He ran after his brothers, his Power Rangers backpack hanging off his shoulders. Kevin came him the brotherly smile and asked, "How you feeling about your first day of school, Nicky?" He always asked these sort of questions but Nick didn't mind. In a quiet voice, he answered, "A little nervous." And then Joe just had to make him become a bit more then nervous.
"Yeah, but Nicky, you should look out for the mean fourth graders. The girls in my grade are heaps mean and have a hobby of pushing first graders- ow!" Joe stopped talking when Kevin punched him in the arm to stop him from talking. "What was that for?" He asked with a pout on his face before Kevin gestured to Nick.
A look of fright was on Nick's face at the moment. "I-I'm going to get pushed? Am I-I g-g-going to get hurt?" He asked tearfully. The tears were stinging his eyes. Suddenly the first day of school wasn't looking too exciting.
Seeing the mistake he made, Joe put his arm around his little brother's shoulder. "No, no, I was joking. Only a joke," He said, a small smile appearing in the corner of his mouth. He didn't want his little brother to cry.
Nick looked up at his older brothers and saw the smiles on their faces. "You know guys, it's not funny to play pranks on me like that," He said, smiling a little as well. His two older brothers laughed as they turned the corner of the street, revealing Nick's new school.
Kids were running around the front of the school, meeting up with their friends. Nick's eyes widened as he saw all the older kids. He had never thought there would be this many. That feeling of fright was starting to creep back into his stomach.
He trailed behind Joe and Kevin as he took in the scenery. Almost dead grass, weeds, minimal trees; not what he expected school to be like. He had pictured school as a place where you were able to meet people in a nice environment where there was no yelling or screaming. There was enough of that at home.
"Oi! Jonas!"
Joe suddenly stopped and Nick rammed into the back of him. Shaking his head, he looked around for the owner of the voice. He then saw a girl walking over to them. She had long black hair and cold, grey eyes. She was wearing a leather jacket and jeans. Scary, Nick thought. He took hold of the Joe's sleeve and held on as the girl got closer. "Joey..." He whimpered.
The girl, called Harlow, stood still and stared into Joe's eyes. "You still owe me that five dollars. I want it," She demanded, her eyes piercing Joe's. Nick whimpered again and snuggled closer to Joe's arm.
Harlow's eyes then turned to little Nick. "Aw, is this your little brother? Well, Jonas, I want my five dollars now. Bad things will happen if you don't pay up," She hissed, grabbing hold of Nick's arm and pulling him out from behind Joe.
Nick bit his lip and looked up at Harlow, his eyes full of fear. He couldn't look away from her face. Sure, it scared him but it also hypnotized him.
Joe gasped as Nick was pulled from behind him. "Look, I don't have your five dollars, but please, let my brother go," He said, his eyes pleading.
She smirked. "As you wish," She muttered. With all her force, she shoved Nick into the ground carelessly. Turning around, she walked off, happy with herself.
Tears escaped his eyes and fell down his cheek. He looked at his elbows and saw that he had skinned them, the same as the palms of his hands. His first day of school wasn't going well at all.
Joe dropped down by Nick's side and wrapped his arms around him. "Nick, I'm sorry. Shh, don't cry. Shh..." He whispered, placing his chin on the crown of his brother's head.
It was September the sixteenth and today was Nick's most important concert. It was the day that Nick turned sixteen and they had scheduled the concert to be in Wyckoff, New Jersey, his and his brother's hometown.
They were playing Burnin' Up and Nick was christening the guitar he had received from his brothers. It was electric blue and had silver and black lightening bolts on it. His fingers hit the strings like it was any of his other five guitars but this guitar was special as his brothers had scraped together all their money to buy this eleven hundred dollar guitar.
He strummed the final note and listened to the unison of girls screaming ecstatically. He grinned. That was all he wanted; his fans to be happy. Kevin was in it for the same reason and Joe... well, that was one of the reasons why Joe was in it.
Nick was about to walk backstage when he heard Joe's voice in the microphone. "Today is a special day everyone. Today is Nick Jonas' sixteenth birthday!" He said. The crowd screamed and Nick couldn't help but blush. "Come on everyone, let's sing him a happy birthday," He said, grinning ear to ear. Then, he, Kevin and the whole crowd were singing Happy Birthday.
"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Nick,
Happy birthday to you."
Nick walked up to the microphone after the crowd stopped screaming again. "Hey, thanks! I love you guys!" He said, waiting for the screams to chorus again. And he was right.
After several minutes, he was finally backstage and packing up his guitar. Joe came strutting passed him, giving him the eye. Obviously he had seen Nick blush. "Joe, I'll deal with you later about how you did that to me, but right now all I want is fresh air," He muttered and headed over to the door that led to outside.
He grinned as he opened the door. He was away from all the mayhem that was backstage and was out in the open. Stepping forward, he closed his eyes and breathed in the air.
"Hello birthday boy."
His eyes opened immediately and he saw a girl leaning against the wall opposite him. She had black hair that was in two ponytails, too much make up on and she was only covering herself with a small dress that could easily be classified as a shirt.
"Um, hi."
He didn't know what else to say to this girl. He should feel lucky since she wasn't a screaming fan girl but she seemed like she was only nineteen and he just noticed the cigarette that was in between her fingers. The girl had seen him looking at her in a weird way.
"This look is a new phase. I used to be preppy and that was just horrible. This look will pass on in a few days."
He smiled. She seemed nice enough. He walked over to her, biting down on his lip. Whenever he went outside without Big Rob guarding him he was always scared he was going to get mobbed by fan girls. "I'm Nick," He introduced himself. A smirk appeared on her face.
"Yeah, I know."
There was a slight pause where Nick could have asked for her name. When that idea reached his head and he was about to ask it, the girl spoke before he could. "I know this might be a little too early to ask, but want to go out for a coffee tomorrow or something?" She asked, looking at the ground.
Nick's eyebrows rose when he heard this. No girl had the courage like she did. All the girls asked him to marry them but she actually wanted to go out for a coffee and it might not even be in a date kind of way.
"Sure, I'd l-love to."
When he saw the light in her eyes, he felt that he had done a good deed. "I'll meet you at the closest Starbucks at let's say, seven in the morning?" She said, giving him a sweet smile that didn't match the way she looked. Nick nodded without knowing it as his eyes were transfixed on the sweet smile.
She started to walk away, her arse shaking a little before Nick realized he still hadn't asked her what her name was. "Hey, what's your name?" He shouted after her. She waited a few seconds before replying.
"Harlow."
She then started to run. Nick didn't think anything of her name before he remembered a childhood memory; his first day of school. Harlow... no way! It can't be her... could it? No, it's just a coincidence, he thought.
He was walking down the deserted streets of Wyckoff. Of course it was deserted, he had planned to meet Harlow at seven in the morning. He was glad about this because hordes of fan girls weren't exactly what he wanted.
He ran a hand through his curly hair before ruffling it. He hadn't tried to get really ready because he was just meeting a friend for a coffee. What if she thought it was more? Nick did think that Harlow had a pretty smile and she was great because she didn't scream when she saw him; she seemed classy despite the look and all. Never judge a book by its cover.
He saw Starbucks in his sight and he let a small grin take over his lips. Before he knew it, he was standing in front of Starbucks and he pushed the door open. He scanned the area for Harlow and he found her sitting in the corner. Sighing with relief that she had showed up, he walked over to her.
"Hey."
She looked at him, her eyes widened. Maybe she hadn't expected him to show up. "Um, hey," She said. Nick sat down and grinned at her.
He had talked to his brothers about her last night and how her name was Harlow. He had also said that he liked her a little bit. Kevin had been too tired to listen and had fallen asleep but Joe had told him to stay away from her because the chances that it was the Harlow they knew when they were younger was tremendous. But Nick had came anyway because what chance was there that Joe was right?
As much as he didn't think that this Harlow was the Harlow he knew, he needed to know. "Harlow, I was just wondering, have we met before? I mean, at a club, at a shopping center, at sch-" "Yes, we have, and you don't need to divert what you were actually going to say. Yes, I was the one who bullied you when you were younger."
There was an awkward silence as Nick looked down at the table with disbelief. This girl had actually been the one who hurt him physically and emotionally when he was younger. His instant reaction was to leave but that would make Joe right and that was like saying that God was wrong.
"Look, Nick, I wanted you to meet me here because I'm sorry. Truly, truly sorry."
And Nick believed her.
After Nick had forgiven Harlow, the two talked about anything and everything. Harlow had talked about how her parents were divorced, how she was in college studying physics and how she worked part time at a club. He had talked about touring around the country, the songs and his brothers.
He was really beginning to like Harlow.
It was nearly ten in the morning when another awkward silence commenced. Nick had stupidly asked what Harlow wanted in a boyfriend. He actually really liked Harlow and wanted to know if he was her type.
Out of nowhere, Harlow lent forward and placed a kiss on his lips. It was a soft kiss; gentle. His eyes were closed as he reminisced the kiss over and over again in his mind.
"Someone who will settle for a kiss like that."
He opened his eyes and smiled at her. He took hold of her hand and gave her a smile like they were dating.
"Nick, you have to ask me something..."
"Oh, right. Will you go out with me?"
"It'd be my pleasure."
He had only been going out with Harlow for 30 hours but he was already in love. He hadn't seen her since yesterday and that was why he was going over to her apartment today.
He was brushing his curls when Joe walked into the room, an uncomfortable look in his eyes.
"Nick, she's bad news. I'm not joking."
Nick was fed up with this.
"Your just jealous Joe because I have a girlfriend and you don't."
"That's not true. Nick, listen to me!"
"No! You have lied to me heaps of times, why should I listen to you?"
"I'm trying to protect you Nick! Your my brother and I love you! Believe me!"
"NO! I love Harlow and you are going to have to live with it!"
With that, he stormed out of the room. He was fed up with Joe.
He walked inside the apartment building that Harlow lived in. He popped his lips, anxious to see Harlow again. He never knew that you could find true love in one day.
He walked up the staircases, looking at the golden letters on the door, looking for number 146. Harlow had given him the number of her apartment yesterday when they talked at Starbucks before they officially started going out. He didn't mind she lived in an apartment. Better then nowhere, right?
On the fifth level, he finally saw the golden numbers 146 welded onto a cream door. He walked over to the door and knocked on it before noticing that it was already open. Pushing it open, he saw something that he wished he hadn't.
Harlow had her legs wrapped around some guy and their lips were mashed against each others. They were both in their underwear and the guy was in the process of undoing Harlow's bra. "What the hell?!" Nick yelled, angry tears stinging already.
Harlow let go off the guy she had entangled her legs around and looked at Nick. "Um, Nick, this isn't what it looks like..." She muttered, walking over to him.
"We've been going out for what, a day, and you are already hooking up with another guy?"
"No, it's not that, it's-"
"Were you even thinking about me when you were kissing him?"
"I was. I imagined he was you and-"
"Whatever, Harlow, whatever! Why would you do that?!"
"Nick, you have to understand, I'm not a sweet girl. I'm a bad person and always have been. It's my job to make people miserable."
"What- wait, when you said that this-this look was just a phase, were you lying? Were you lying so you could get into my pants and then cheat on me?"
"No! Nick, no... I'm a bad person, but not that bad."
"Did you have any idea that I loved you? Did you?"
"I did, I love you too-"
"Obviously you don't!"
"I love you Nick, I love you with all my heart, but i'm just a bad person. Can you forgive me?"
"Only if it can mend a broken heart. Which it can't."
"Oh, Nick-"
She couldn't finish off what she was going to say to Nick because he had run for the stairs, tears splattered all over his face.
"Nick, I'm sorry."
He had ran the whole way home. He had ran home and didn't let anyone stop him. His heart had been broken by the one girl he had ever truly loved. How would he be able to fix it and love again?
It hadn't taken him long to run home as it was his destination. He pushed open the door and ran through the home. Everyone was on an outing except for Joe, who looked worried and curious when Nick sprinted pass, tears rolling down his face. He got up and started following his brother but he tripped over the coffee table and hurt his leg. Typical.
Nick opened the garage door and slammed it behind him. In front of him was Joe's motorbike. Nick wasn't able to drive but who cared. This motorbike could easily help fix his heart by taking away the rest of his life. He jumped onto the motorbike and revved it. He was about to press the acceleration handle when he was pulled off the bike by Joe.
Joe had his eyes wrapped firmly around Nick as he pulled him to the ground in a hug. "Nick, what the hell is your problem?!" He shouted furiously. When Nick cuddled up to his jumper and started crying more, Joe felt almost as sad as his brother. He hated seeing him cry.
"You were right."
Those three words were enough to rip Joe's heart out. Harlow had heart his little brother's heart. Nick continued to cry, sob and howl. He placed his chin on the crown of Nick's head.
"Nick, I'm sorry. Shh, don't cry. Shh..."
The exact same thing he saw when Harlow first hurt his little brother.
