"Vacation"
~~~Chapter 1~~~
Concluding my many goodbyes, I logged off of facebook and shut my laptop. Slipping it into a bag, I walked down the stairs to see my Mom, Dad, Heidi, and Gabriel cramming things out the door to fit into the car. I grabbed my black ray bans off the kitchen counter and walked reluctantly out the door. Climbing up into the family's green Trail Blazer, I turned on my beat up pink and white cell phone and sadly sent my last text, knowing that I would soon be out of service for the remainder of the trip.
Here's how this all started. My sister-in-law, Tammy, works with someone who got our family a deal on a cabin up north, so my Mom and Dad excitedly, and immediately, agreed with the price and started making arrangements. They didn't even ask if I had any plans; which I did. I was supposed to go to a Jonas Brother's concert with my two best friends. So, here I am, crammed next to my 5 year old nephew, Gabriel, a blue cooler, and a bag of hot dog buns, dreading the next five weeks away from civilization.
After the four hour long car ride, we finally arrived. I grabbed all my bags and ran into the cabin to claim a room. I threw my big white bag onto the bunk bed I decided was mine and grabbed my favorite green hoodie before slipping out the back door. Time to explore.
It was a breath-taking, beautiful place; mountainous and quiet. I walked through the trees and took in the scenery. Minutes later, I pushed through yet another line of trees and was greeted by ocean water splashing at my feet. Heck, might as well enjoy it; I'm stuck here for quite a while.
I sat down on the sand and slipped off my turquoise converse. The sun was setting and I had the beach to myself, it was amazing. Living with my sister, her husband, my nephew, and my mom and dad never left much time to be alone. This was so great. I wiggled my bare toes in the sunlight and slowly melted into the newfound freedom, falling asleep.
I was jolted awake by huge, mountainous thunder and bright, flashing lightning. I was soaking wet and freezing. It must have started storming as I slept.
"Crap!" I exclaimed, picking up my shoes and running under a tree for shelter. I slipped my shoes on over my soggy socks and stood up to walk back to the cabin. "Beautiful!" My dad had said of tonight's weather. Thanks, dad. Now my hair was dripping with rain, and I could hear my sneakers squishing with every step I took. I zipped up my hoodie, but it provided no extra warmth, considering that it was just as wet as the rest of me. I walked on the same path that got me to the beach in the first place, wishing it wasn't as long of a journey.
Along the way, the silence was overwhelming. The only sounds were my feet crunching fallen branches below me and the rain falling. Then suddenly, a new sound echoed in my ears; tires rotating quickly across the wet ground. I kept walking, figuring it was someone who lived nearby or someone like me who got caught in the storm. The bike kept getting closer and closer, but it was late at night and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Then out of nowhere, I was whipped to the ground with a rip and a thud.
"AHHHH!" I screamed, not expecting the sudden -and painful- impact.
"Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry!" The biker exclaimed. We fumbled around in the dark to pick up his bike. I stood and rubbed the spot on my butt where I had fallen. Waiting for him to flip down his bike stand, I slipped my hands into the pockets of my hoodie, but only one went in. The other didn't even touch the fabric. This guy's bike must have ripped my jacket! My FAVORITE hoodie! Dang it.
"What are you doing out here at this time of night?" The guy asked. His voice was soft and soothing.
"I could ask you the same thing." I replied, running my finger up and down the ripped fabric on my jacket.
"I'm on vacation here and wanted a little adventure. Want a ride home?" He asked, sounding genuinely caring, and somewhat familiar.
"Uh, that'd be thoughtful of you." I said uneasily. I didn't know this guy and I usually knew better than to accept an invite from a total stranger, but something about him made me feel comfortable. I knew I could trust him, I felt like I knew him.
I heard him pat the seat of his bike so I felt my way over and hopped on. He stood up on the pedals and we took off. We finally rode to a bike path. The moon shone through the trees and glimmered on his wet bike. In the moonlight, I tried to catch a glimpse of this guy, to figure out where I knew him from.
He had dark, curly hair, and he smelled really nice. Also, he was wearing black skinny jeans, white sneakers, and what looked like a red hoodie. In the distance, I saw a light shining from a little wooden cabin. My family's cabin.
"There it is." I said, pointing so that he could see.
"Okay, cool." The guy responded, turning the handlebars of the bike and slowing down. Before I knew it, we skidded to a stop right in front of the cabin. I hopped off the bike and finally got the chance to actually look at his face. The porch light was on, so I could see every detail; and was shocked at what I saw.
"Oh my God." I said, backing away from him to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. They weren't. "You're..." My mouth hung open. He stepped off the bike and laughed, outstretching his hand to shake mine.
"Joe Jonas. Nice to meet you." I shook his hand and stood there in awe.
"What are you doing here?" I asked. Just then his phone rang. He quickly looked at the screen and rolled his eyes.
"Sorry, gotta go. I'll see you around."
"Oh, okay." I said, annoyed by how disappointed I sounded. He hopped back onto his red bike and started to pedal away, but turned and came back for a moment.
"Sorry about your jacket." He said, zipping up his own hoodie. "It still looks cute on you." He added with a wink. It felt like a million butterflies were trapped inside my stomach. My heart fluttered furiously in my chest as I watched him ride away.
