“Okay, so we need to get you an amazing dress for tomorrow night,” Michelle said, grabbing things off the rack left and right. We were standing in an amazing boutique somewhere close to Rodeo Drive. It come Italian name I couldn’t pronounce and would take a month of secretarial work for me to buy even just a t-shirt, but Michelle didn’t seem concerned with any of this. I, however, cringing at another price tag, was very concerned.
“Couldn’t I just get a nice dress from Macy’s or something?”
“Sweetheart,” Michelle said, tucking a piece of dark hair behind her ear as she eyed a pair of sparkly stilettos. “Kevin gave me specific instructions. You are to be spoiled. Besides, I spend my days dressing three boys, I want to have some fun with girly stuff.”
I smiled and picked up some bangles off a table. “Well, since you know them so well, you’ll make sure I’ll wear something Kevin will like?”
“Henley,” she said, coming over and laying four more dressed into my arms. “That boy wouldn’t care if you showed up in an astronaut suit. But come on, I’ll make sure you’re the prettiest girl there.”
Three hours and numerous wardrobe changes later, I had the perfect outfit. Michelle was seriously a genius, because there was no way I could have pulled it together on my own. I had a gotten a gorgeous cream slip dress with black straps and a gemmed neckline. It fell just above my knees, which was fine, but knowing me, I would spend most of the night pressing down the back to make sure my butt wasn’t showing. My Pandora bracelet matched perfectly, and we picked up a pair of simple diamond stud earrings. She even planned my hair out for me: a curly waves. Simple, yet classic. This was fine as long as I wasn’t responsible for getting it presentable. I was terrible at curling my hair.
“You’re going to look smashing, dahling,” Michelle said in a British accent as we laid my outfit out on my bed and put the other bags on the floor. We had bought a few other things to get me through the week, all of which I couldn’t wait to wear.
“As long as I don’t fall out of the heels and break my ankle,” I grimaced, holding up the four inch heels. Okay, maybe I could wait to wear those.
“Yes, and falling on your butt in front of all those cameras. Quite a red carpet moment,” Michelle laughed. “You’ll be fine I’m sure.” But I had already frozen.
“Red—red carpet?” I squeaked.
“Well, actually, I think it’s a blue carpet,” she said, before casting a look at my anxious face. “Oh, sweetie, don’t worry. You won’t have to deal with those people. I was just saying, you would knock’em dead.”
She gave me a one armed-hug and left the room. I flopped down on the bed, exhausted from the early morning flight and hours of shopping. The only sound was the wind blowing through the open veranda doors and the rustling of the palm trees outside. Everyone in a while a car would honk, but other than that, it was hard to believe I was in the middle of Los Angeles. I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I new, I heard the sound of teenage boys ascending the stairs.
“Joe, you could have backed me up a bit,” Nick was saying as he stomped off past my door. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, hoping my hair wasn’t sticking out everywhere or I had drool running down my chin.
“Everyone knows it anyway. It’s all over Perez,” I heard Joe yelled back. “Oh hey Hen,” he said as he walked by on his way to his room. I gave him a small smile, but it widened as Kevin entered the door frame.
“Did you fall asleep?” he asked, giving me a lopsided smile.
“Maybe for a bit,” I admitted sheepishly, pushing myself up off the bed. He came over and pulled me into his arms; I relished the warmth and comfort his embrace brought me. It had been a long time since I had felt this way. He placed a kiss on the top of my head.
“Is that your dress?” he asked curiously, looking at the bed.
“Perhaps,” I said, hastily standing in front of it. “You can’t see it yet though, or it will ruin the surprise.”
“You can still sit with me, you know?” he offered. “Right near the stage, celebrities on all sides.” He thought he was being tempting, but in all honesty, that was the last thing I wanted. I could barely function normally around my famous boyfriend –ha, boyfriend, that sounds so weird -, how was I supposed to act around a gaggle of movie stars and pop sensations??
“Thanks for the offer, but I think I’ll hang out with you parents.” He pouted and I giggled at how ridiculous that sounded. Hm..Kevin Jonas? Or his delightful, yet slightly less famous and attractive parents? Well, at least Frankie could keep me entertained.
“Alright, well, since they will have your attention tomorrow night, I was wondering if I could steal you away tonight. We haven’t really had time to have a proper date yet.”
“Are you asking me out, Mr. Jonas?” I asked with a grin.
“And I’m really hoping you’ll say yes, because if not, you’ll probably break my heart,” he replied, putting his hand on his chest.
“Hmm,” I said, pretending to think. “I don’t know...I heard Joe was having a Halo tournament tonight. It sounds a little too good to pass up.”
“Oh! You’re killing me babe!” he said, pulling me into him again and attacking my neck with kisses. I giggled happily.
“What did you have in mind?”
“Get dressed in something comfortable, and be downstairs in half and hour. I know that you’ll like it.” I gave him a smile as he kissed me lightly and left the room. Half an hour and then my first official date with Kevin; I felt like I was in seventh grade again and Steven Benner asked me to the Halloween dance. Okay, so maybe I felt a little better than that, but you get the idea.
I pulled on a new pair of jeans and a white, flowy tank top. After pulling my hair back into a messy bun and fixing my make-up, I went down stairs where Denise was setting the dinner table.
“Ready to go?” Kevin asked from his place at the table, where he was bouncing his leg nervously. I nodded and he jumped up, grabbing my hand. “We’ll be back later, Mom,” he said as he pulled me down the hall.
“Have fun!” she called after us.
Kevin graciously opened the passenger door of his Hybrid Tahoe for me and nearly sprinted to the other side.
“In a hurry?” I laughed as he launched himself into the seat.
“I don’t want to miss it,” he said, backing out and pulling onto the main road.
“Miss what?” I asked curiously.
He didn’t respond, merely bit his lip and focused on driving. I decided it was better not to bother him. We drove for about twenty minutes, away from the city and neighborhoods and up along the coast. I watched peacefully as waves of the Pacific Ocean glistened under the sinking sun. It was breathtaking.
Finally, Kevin turned the car off the highway and onto a sandy road, which led down toward the water. A small wooden building appeared among the sea grass, with a few jeeps and mopeds parked outside. He stopped the car and smiled at me.
“Perfect timing.” We got out of the car and he grabbed my hand, pulling me quickly down, passed the building and down onto the beach. The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon. It was spectacular, the most amazing sight I had ever seen, and it grew more beautiful as each minute went by. Kevin and I stood there, hand in hand, watching at the sky changes from blue, to orange, to pink, purple, and finally navy.
“That was amazing,” I finally breathed, as the stars became visible, bright points of light scattered through the sky.
“I love coming here to watch it, away from everything. It’s so refreshing, watching the day end, knowing you can start all over again in a few hours.”
I knew exactly what he meant. I looked over at him, but something else caught my eye. The back of the shack had a large wooden porch, which had multiple tables and bright Christmas lights hanging around the roof, soft music playing.
“What is that?” I asked.
Kevin smiled. “It’s where we are having dinner.”
“So, how did the interview go?” I asked as I bit into the cheesy nachos we were sharing. The restaurant was amazing, with all the waiters knowing Kevin, but treating him no differently than they would a good friend. We sat at the end of the patio, with a beautiful view of the ocean. I couldn’t remember something being so romantic.
“It went...well,” he said, shrugging a bit. “Nick didn’t have a good time.”
“What happened?”
“Well, everyone is asking about Selena Gomez, who Nick likes and has gone on a few dates with. But they aren’t really going out, you know? Anyway, the topic came up and of course Nick denies everything. But Joe, he just...sometimes he doesn’t realize that people are looking at him constantly. So he rolls his eyes or something and gets called out on it. Needless to say, Nick wasn’t happy, and now everyone thinks he and Selena are exclusive.”
“Sounds tough,” I frowned.
“We can’t even hang out with a girl without everyone thinking we’re dating. It’s ridiculous, sometimes.”
“What would you say,” I asked curiously, “if someone asked if you had a girlfriend. Would you say that you did?”
“I would if you wanted me too,” he replied. “But if you didn’t, I would say I was single. I know you don’t like a lot of attention on you. And, I hate to say it, but openly dating me would bring attention.”
“Maybe keeping it quiet for now would be best,” I said quietly. “At least until I can tell my parents and everyone just what is going on.”
He nodded.
“It just sucks that I have to go back to school in a week,” I continued. “Right after your tour finishes and you have more free time.”
“Can I come visit?” he asked, taking a sip of his water. “Or would you prefer I didn’t?”
“No!” I replied quickly, beaming at him. “I would love it if you came to visit. I can promise there won’t be any paparazzi in Lancaster.”
“Well, then maybe over fall break or something,” he smiled. “I miss seeing New England autumns.”
I was happy, but the more I thought about it, the less that thought gladdened me. Fall break. The middle of October. That was almost two months without seeing him, not being able to hug him. I shook my head, not wanting to think about it.
I yawned and Kevin smiled. “We really need to get you to like Red Bull. It works wonders.” He raised his hand and signaled for the check. I was sad that the night was ending, but I could not wait to get back into the comfortable bed.
When we got back to the house, it was silent, the Jonas family obviously enjoying their first night back in their own beds. Kevin walked me to my room and pulled me into a hug just outside the door.
“Thank you for today,” I said into his chest. “I can’t believe everything you have done for me.”
“You deserve it,” he said into my hair, before taking my chin and making me look up at him. He leaned down, capturing my mouth with his, in a hungry, passionate kiss. I was caught off guard for such need, but I quickly had the same urge and wrapped my arms around his neck, pushing my body as close to his as possible. We just stood there, holding each other, our heads bent together, relishing the moment. I didn’t want to let him go.
He eventually untangled himself from me and I could see the struggle in his eyes.
“You should get to bed,” he whispered. “It’s going to be a long say tomorrow.”
I nodded, but couldn’t bring myself to smile. I didn’t want him to be all the way down the hall from me. I wanted him right here, not that I would ever admit it.
“Goodnight,” he said softly, cupping my head in my hands and placing a tender kiss on each of my cheeks. He left me then, walking down the hall and disappearing around the corner. Signing, I went into my room and collapsed on the bed. I was hoping to run over the events of the day in my mind, experiencing them one more time, but as soon as my head hit the pillow, sleep overcame me. The next day, would be one I would never forget...
