Chapter 11
“I’m not keeping you up, am I?” His voice flooded out of the phone and engulfed me, sending shivers of pleasure through my body, and I fought I contain giggles of happiness. I was annoyed with myself for getting to excited over a little phone call, and I knew it could only hurt me to let myself get so wrapped up in him, but I couldn’t help it. I lived for the moment he called, the moment he said my name. “Henley?” Kevin asked as I pulled the covers higher over my head. “Sorry, it’s just my mom is sleeping in the next room over and I don’t want to wake her up.” It was nearing 1 am, and Kevin was calling my after his show in Charlotte, North Carolina. I loved listening to him as described the atmosphere of the show, their visits to family in the area, and how they spent their down time playing kickball and golf. Kevin was an extrovert, and he loved to talk and share his stories, which worked well for me, since I as more introverted and preferred to listen. “So, will you tell me something?” he asked. “Of course,” I replied without thinking, heat rising in my cheeks in happiness. He was actually interested in me! “Number three?” I bit my lip and smiled. “Why are you so interested in my life, Mr. Jonas? It must be so boring compared to yours.” “On the contrary, Miss Fisher, I find it absolutely fascinating. You’re favorite experiences tell me a lot about you.” “Oh,” I giggled. “No pressure there, then. Um, number three would have to be three years ago, when my best friend Kate and I went up to New York for the premier of the third Harry Potter movie. We were Harry Potter freaks, liked obsessed, we knew everything there was to know about them. You have no idea how crazy we were.” “I’m sure I can picture it,” he chuckled and I mentally slapped myself.
“Sorry, sometimes I forget that you’re a world famous rock star with millions of adoring fans.”
“Don’t be sorry, that’s what I like the most about you. You treat me like a normal person and not one have you screamed in my ear, so that puts you high up on my list. You’re blushing aren’t you?”
Damn him. My silence was enough an answer he cracked up laughing. “I’m not even there and you turn red. What am I going to do with you Henley?”
“Do you want to here the rest of the story or not?” I asked impatiently, trying to change the subject.
“I’m sorry,” he said, still chuckling slightly. “Please continue.”
“Thank you. Anyway, we got there really early and were standing outside Radio City Music Hall for, like, ten hours, but we got right up front against the red carpet, so we got to see all the actors when they came in. So, it ended up that the kid who plays Draco Malfoy seemed to take a liking to Kate and ended up giving us two tickets to the premier. We got to go in and sit in a balcony and watch the world premier of the movie, with all the actors sitting below us. It was pretty unbelievable.”
“That is pretty cool. I love those books. That would definitely make my top five as well. So, did you friend and Draco ever hook up?”
I laughed. “No, Kate had a huge crush on Daniel Radcliffe at the time, so she pretty much ignored the Draco kid. I was furious with her, but she’s stubborn and won’t change her mind for anyone.”
“Sounds like Joe,” Kevin laughed, but stopped quickly at my silence.
“He told you he talked to me?” I asked quietly, hoping I didn’t get him in trouble.
“Yeah, he did,” Kevin sighed. “He was pretty pissed I hadn’t told him.”
“I don’t understand why you didn’t though,” I said, even though I had an idea.
Kevin was quiet for a moment. “I was being selfish,” he admitted after a moment. “And slightly paranoid. I was worried you would like him more than you like me.”
I was touched. “Kevin, you don’t have to worry about that. Really, I mean, I like Joe, but you and he are so different.”
“Joe is the ladies man.”
“I don’t care about that,” I laughed.
“I like you a lot, Henley,” Kevin said, his voice soft. My heart was nearly beating out my chest as I tried to catch my breath. “And it just seems that whenever I like a girl, Joe swoops in and she falls for him. I know he doesn’t do it on purpose, but it happens. And I didn’t want that to happen with you.”
“It won’t,” I whispered. “I promise.” This was a promise I knew I could keep. I could easily grow to love Joe, but as nothing more than a friend or brother. Kevin on the other hand…I don’t know how I could live being that close with him and not having something more.
“Well, I don’t think I have to worry about him too much anymore, though. He kept going on about your friend with the leather chaps?”
I snorted in laughter and had to cover my mouth to keep quite.
“I’m not even sure I want to know,” Kevin continued, amusement evident. “But please tell me your not in some S&M cult or something.”
“No, definitely not,” I giggled.
“Good, cause bondage isn’t really my thing. I get a nasty rash.” “Okay, this has gone a little to far, I think…”
“I think you’re right. Okay, changing the topic now…Will you do something for me?” Kevin asked after a moment, a smile in his voice.
“Anything. But no bondage.”
“Damn it. Okay, in all seriousness though, come to Florida.”
“What?” I asked, shocked.
“Come to Florida,” he repeated. “Our last show is in Orlando in two weeks and I want to see you again before we go back to LA. I’ll pay for air fare and hotels and everything. I just want you to come.”
I pondered this only for a moment. There was no choice as far as I was concerned; of course I was going to go. It was just convincing the parentals that going to Florida two weeks before classes started to hang out with a band for three days would be acceptable. My mom wouldn’t be a problem; she’d probably ask why I wasn’t with the boys now traveling with them. It was my dad.
“I’ll come on one condition,” I said, hoping I could convince my father that I would be fine.
“Name it.”
“I get to bring a friend.”

Chapter 12
“What the hell is this??”
I held up a pair of black leather pants that had been sticking out of Kate’s suitcase, which was opened and laying amongst a pile of clothes and accessories on her bedroom floor. Kate snatched the pants away from and shoved them back into the suitcase.
“Just in case,” she mumbled, turning back to her closet and pulling out four more outfits and tossing them unceremoniously onto her bed.
“Katherine Rosemary Frye!” I exclaimed, holding up a fuzzy pair of handcuffs which had been tucked into a side pouch. “You can’t have possibly taken Joe seriously when he said he was into this stuff!”
She grabbed the handcuff away from me and held them to her chest. “You never know,” she said, defiantly.
“Kate, they where purity rings.”
“I’m not planning on defiling them,” she shot back, looking hurt. “I just want to be prepared. He might be expecting me the way you described and I don’t want to disappoint.”
I shook my head in amused disbelief. That girl was crazy. “As long as you don’t go get fifty tattoos please. I don’t want to have to explain that to your mom. Where’d you get that stuff anyway?” I glanced around Kate’s pale green room, with her Little Mermaid figurines and Harry Potter posters.
“I stole the handcuffs from my cousin’s bachelorette party last summer. The pants are from my Harley Davidson Halloween costume in ninth grade.”
Another reason I hate Kate: she can fit into clothes from ninth grade.
“Please tell me you are packing some normal outfits as well,” I begged, looking at the mounds of clothes strewn across the room. Kate was never one to throw any article of clothing away, convinced that it would come back someday and she could give it to her daughters and save herself a lot of money. Or she could use them for costumes.
“Of course I am, I just don’t know what to pack! I want to be prepared for anything. I mean, we might go to the zoo one day, we might go out for dinner, I need a concert outfit, and an after concert outfit, and cute lounge clothes and then swim suits…oh God, how many times do you think we’ll go swimming??”
“We’re there for two nights. I think two swim suits would be more than enough. I packed in less than twenty minutes, how does it take you this long!?”
“You’ve already met them,” she said, as if that explained everything. “I want to impress.”
“Kate, they will love you, I guarantee it. Just don’t scream when you see them or start crying.”
“Okay, so I guess wearing the “I HEART JOE JONAS WITH ALL MY HEART AND WANT TO HAVE HIS BABIES” t-shirt isn’t the way to go?”
She looked at me innocently.
“I’m kidding,” she cried at my shocked face. “Please, I didn’t even listen to the Jonas Brothers until you starting dating one.” “We’re not dating!”
“Of course you aren’t,” she smirked. “That’s why he invited you down to Florida and is paying your entire way.”
“Okay, I don’t know if this has changed, but the last time I checked to be considered dating, you actually have to go on a date. The only time I’ve hung out with Kevin was when his brothers were there.”
“Why do I have the feeling you’re the only girl on earth who wouldn’t claim to be dating all three of them after the day you spent?”
I shrugged. “Cause I’m not psychotic? You’re not going to go around claiming your dating Joe after this trip, are you?”
She grinned. “In my mind, we’re already going steady.”
I laughed. “A lot of interesting things go on in your mind.”
“What is this?” she asked, ignoring me and instead pulling a notebook out of my back pack.
“My poetry,” I said, blushing and trying to take it from her, but she held it out of arms reach.
“Last night I fell in love with a stranger, behind the glass house he came walking out the backdoor, into a crowd of screaming girls calling his name,” she read. She looked up at me. “Is this about Kevin?”
“No,” I muttered, heat rising in my face. She rolled her eyes and continued.
“He's in a rock band with a voice like an angel, And eyes of a raven sky? That is totally Kevin.”
“It could be Joe, or even Nick,” I pointed out, grabbing it away from her. “Or that guy from Fall Out Boy.”
“The one who’s dating Ashlee Simspon?”
“Yeah, and they’re having a baby.”
“I know! Oh my God, when I heard – hey, no changing the subject!”
I giggled despite myself. “It’s just a poem, nothing else. It doesn’t mean anything.”
“Mmhmm, sure. Just keep telling yourself that. Now, help my pack my make up.”
The next morning, Kate and I were sitting on the huge 747, soaring over the United States, well, actually I think we were over Georgia by that point. I have never been a fan of flying. Any small bump or noise I freak. So, I listen to music ridiculously loud and strap myself in for dear life and don’t stand up until we’ve landed.
Kate, on the other hand was living it up, talking to herself (since I had my headphones in) about how excited she was. The man sitting next to her seemed to be getting pretty annoyed with her blabbing.
We landed after 3 hours of flight, and I was still shaking slightly was we exited and made our way to the baggage claim. Kevin had said that Big Rob would come pick us up and take us back to the hotel, where we would have time to relax and get ready before the concert. As we walked through the automatic doors, dragging our heavy suitcases out into the Florida heat, a familiar patch of curly hair caught my eye among the swarms of travelers.
“Oh my God,” I mumbled in excitement.
“I know, this heat is going to kill my hair. Can you say Frizz City?”
“No, Kate, he’s here!”
“Who? Oh, Kevin! Where?!”
I didn’t have time to answer, because Kevin broke out from the crowd and suddenly I was in the air, lifted into a hug and spun around. It was just like a movie!
“I’ve missed you,” he whispered in my ear as he set me down.
“Me too,” I managed to sputter, my brain turning to putty at his smile. We stood there for a moment looking at each other, my hands on his shoulders and his on my hips.
‘Eherrm.”
I jumped back and spun to Kate, who was watching with a knowing grin. “Oh, Kevin this is my best friend Kate,” I said quickly.
“Ah, the one with the whip,” he laughed pulling her into a hug.
“I brought my handcuffs along,” she stated. “You’re brother better watch out.”
“She’s not kidding,” I said when Kevin started to laugh. “They’re pink and furry.”
“Even better,” he smiled, throwing his hands up. “Come on,” he said, grabbing my suit case as Rob grabbed Kate’s. “Let’s you get back to the hotel. I bet you’re exhausted.”
I smiled. In all honesty, I had never felt more excited in my life.

Chapter 12
“Okay, I’m going to warn you,” Kevin said, as we rolled down the highway. We were sitting the backseat of a black sedan and Big Rob was driving. “We tried to keep our hotel a secret, but on the way out a few photographers saw me, so there will probably be a swarm of them when we get there. We’ll go around the back entrance, but just keep your heads down and ignore them.”
“Kevin,” I said quietly. “This isn’t going to cause problems for you, is it? I mean, being seen going into your hotel with two girls...?”
“I really don’t care what they think,” he said solemnly. “There are rumors flying around about us all the time.” I bit my lip nervously as came in view of the hotel. At least, I assumed it was the hotel, because Kevin was right: there were tons of paparazzi and screaming fan girls. The car we were in had tinted window, and even though I was in the middle, I slid down in my seat as we pulled into the drive.
“You all right?” Kevin asked.
“I don’t want to cause you any problems,” I answered. He gave me a comforting smile and took my hand, giving it a squeeze.
“You will never be a problem to me.”
“Oh, hello. Yes, thank you for coming, so kind of you all!” I glanced over at Kate who was waving like a queen out the closed window. The paps and fans were straining to get a look inside. “I feel like a movie star,” Kate said happily.
I couldn’t help but smile, my nerves disappearing as we pulled into the dark parking garage, the flashes of the cameras fading.
“Rob will handle your bags,” Kevin said as we parked, not releasing my hand as we got out of the car. “We have the whole top floor booked, so you don’t have to worry about getting harassed up there by photographers and fans or anything.”
“And I was so looking forward to making it into People,” Kate said wistfully as we entered the lobby, flipping her hair and adjusting her sunglasses.
The hotel was gorgeous, with a big marble fountain in the center of the lobby and exotic plants and flowers in every corner. Kevin kept my hand enclosed in his, calloused fingers brushing lightly against mine as he led us past the lobby, past a lounge, and to the elevators. Pulling a keycard out of his pocket he slid it into the slot near the last elevator. It felt like we were in some James Bond movie. I wouldn’t have been surprised if as soon as we stepped into it, laser beams read our pupils and M’s voice came through a loud speaker.
The elevator took us right to the top floor and we went down a long hallway to the last door, which Kevin opened, revealing a large living room, with leather couches, a flat screen TV, a small kitchen, and a very interesting sight near the balcony.
“Ooh, nice form. Your backhand is superb. Have you been practicing?”
“Shut it, Joseph. Just serve the damn ball.”
Joe and Nick were standing there on opposite sides of a ping pong table. Nick was in red boxer briefs, a large white button up shirt and a top hat. Joe was wearing short shorts, knee high gym socks, a shirt that looked like it was made to fit Frankie, and a bright pink sweatband. Both of them were in stocking feet, no shoes.
“Uh, hey guys,” Kevin said, walking toward them, trying to contain his laughter. “We have company.”
The ping pong ball his Joe smack in the side of the head as he looked over. “Henley!” He said happily, coming over to me and lifting me into a hug. I forced myself to remain calm as I wrapped my arms around his warm torso, hands unintentionally running over his muscles.
“Hey Henley,” Nick said, walking over and hugged me after his brother had pulled away. “It’s good to see you again.”
“It’s great to see you guys too. Nick, Joe, this is my best friend Kate. Kate this is…Kate?”
Kevin, Nick and I looked over at Kate and Joe who were staring at each other with goofy grins on their faces.
“You’re fly is down,” Kate said after a moment, and Joe turned bright red before looking. She was right.
“Awkward…” Nick mumbled as Joe struggled to pull it up.
“Hey,” Joe growled. “That’s my line!”
“Right, well, it was great to meet you Kate and good to see you Henley, but now that you’re here I should probably go put some pants on,” Nick side, color rising in his cheeks. That kid is just way too adorable.
“Why don’t I show you your room?” Kevin asked, smiling as Nick left and Joe kept struggling with his tight shorts.
As soon as we left the pent house, all three of us broke out into fits of laughter.
“You made quite an impression on him, Kate,” Kevin sputtered. “I’ve never seen him blush before!”
Kate shrugged smugly. “I have my ways…”
“Alright, well, come on and I’ll show you your room. You don’t mind sharing do you?”
“No, not at all,” I said quickly. I didn’t want to him to think we weren’t both incredibly grateful for everything he had done.
“Ooh, I can’t wait for tonight, my lesbian lova!” Kevin and I both stopped and looked at Kate, our mouths open in shock. “Funny? No? Okay, forget I said anything,” she mumbled before strutting off down the hallway.
“Is she always like this?” Kevin chuckled as we followed.
“Sadly, yes.”
“Well, I doubt we’ll get bored then.”
“Oh no, there are many words that can be used to describe Kate, and boring is not one of them.”
“Okay, here is your room,” Kevin said, sliding a keycard into the door before handing it to me. We walked in and my mouth dropped. It was gorgeous!
There was a sitting area with a flat screen TV, two huge king size beds and a glass door that led out onto the balcony which over looking the golf course. Our bags were already in the corner of the room, ready to be unpacked.
“This is the life!” Kate cried, flopping down on the bed. I grinned at Kevin.
“This is fantastic, thank you.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he replied, smiling. “Now, I hate to have to leave so quickly, but I figured it would give you two a chance to rest up before the show tonight. We have to go do sound checks and a meet and greet. Eric, our driver, can take you over to the venue at 4:30 for dinner and pre-show stuff.”
“Sounds great,” I said, even though I was a little disappointed he would be leaving me so soon.
Kevin stood there for a moment awkwardly, his eyes shifting over to Kate who was flipping through the TV channels. I looked over to her as well, and after a long moment she sensed us staring. “Oh, right, um, so, yeah. I think I just have to go pee now,” she said, standing up and heading toward the back of the room. She swung open the door and took a step inside before jumping back out.
“Lovely kitchen,” she said. “We have a kitchen! Okay, right, well, thanks again Kev!” And she disappeared into the bathroom. I smiled in embarrassment at him, but he just grinned back. “Spend time with me and you’ll learn to get used to her.”
“I hope spend a lot of time with you,” he said, taking a step closer to me. I inhaled sharply, the butterflies in my stomachs going haywire. I froze to my spot as he took my hand in his, rubbing his thumb over the back of my palm. “I’m really glad you came,” he said softly, his body mere inches from mine.
I looked up into his eyes, forcing myself to form coherent words. “I’m really glad I came too.”
“Are you, I mean, really?” he asked, looking very vulnerable all of a sudden. “Because, I mean, I know it’s a lot to handle, all of this,” he motioned around to the hotel room.
“No, I think I could get used to this,” I giggled, squeezing his hand. “I’m very serious Kevin. I am so happy you invited me.”
His face broke into a wide smile and I felt my knees quiver. “Good. Because all I want is for you to be happy.”
Oh my God, I thought. This boy is perfect.
Kevin leaned in and I felt my body tense. He must have noticed to, because at the last moment, he tilted his head and gave me a soft kiss on my cheek. When he pulled away, I felt myself sag in disappointment.
It’s you own fault, I told myself.
“I have a surprise of you tonight,” Kevin said giddily. He looked so excited, but I felt a lump of guilt form in my stomach.
“Oh, well, thank you, but I didn’t get you anything…”
“You just being here is enough,” he assured me. I saw him glance at the bedside clock and wince.
“Listen, I really have to go, but I’ll see you at the venue alright? I’m sorry about being so rushed today, but tomorrow will be better, I promise.”
“Okay,” I said breathlessly, still unable to believe this was happening to me. Kevin smiled and hesitated for a moment before turning and leaving the room.
Once I was positive he was far down the hallway, I fell down onto my bed and let out a girlish squeal.
“WHAT DID I MISS??” Kate asked, bursting from the bathroom and I burst out into a fit of giggles.
“Nothing,” I managed to laugh. “I just can’t believe all of this!” “Did he kiss you?” she asked, a wicked smile on her face.
“Just on the cheek,” I said, but I could help smiling. “And we won’t see them again until the show, but I am still walking on air. I’ve never felt like this before.”
“Not even with Matt?” she asked, surprised.
“Nope,” I assured her, surprised that the mention of his name did nothing to affect my mood. “Not even with Matt. Hey, what was up with you and Joe, anyway? I was expecting to have to pull you off him, not the other way around.”
“Like I said, I have my ways,” she smirked. “So, what do you say about ordering room service, and by that I mean copious amounts of ice cream, and napping until it’s time to go.”
“Napping sounds fantastic,” I replied, already curling up into the down comforter. To my surprise, it was easy to fall asleep, despite how excited I was. All I dreamt of was being front row at a concert, Kevin singing down at me. It was one of the best dreams I had had in a while.

Chapter 13“So, how do I look?” Kate twirled in front of the mirror, adjusting her shirt and fixing a few strands of fly-away hair. “Gorgeous,” I replied, not even looking up. I knew she looked amazing, she always did. “Do these leggings make me look fat?” I rolled my eyes and looked over. Of course, it didn’t make her look fat. She was wearing a beautiful floral top with a beaded neckline, black leggings and black flats, her hair pulled back into a messy bun, looking gorgeous as always. I glanced at myself self-consciously in the mirror. Beaded black sandals, skinny jeans and a black tank top with sparkly straps…not bad, but standing next to Kate I probably looked like a hobo. “Let me do your make up,” she said, bounding over and grabbing the mascara out of my hand. I made to protest, but she starting jabbing and poking me before I could refuse, and I did not want to lose an eye. She wielded the eyeliner like a weapon. There was a knock at the door, just as she finished coating my face in products. “That must be Eric,” I said, grabbing my purse as Kate did one last twirl in front of the mirror. “Thank God, cause I am starving!” The drive to the venue was pretty uneventful, but as we passed the entrance, I felt butterflies in my stomach. The place was packed, and there was a line around the block waiting to get in, all pre-pubescent girls in I HEART NICK J t-shirts and DJ DANGER headbands. I saw some K2 wear as well, but I ignored it. He invited me, I told myself. Besides, it wouldn’t exactly be legal for him to be with half of these girls anyway… Backstage in Orlando reminded me a lot of backstage in Allentown, with big sitting rooms, white hallways, and nice dressing rooms. We ended up in a large room backstage, with most of the band and roadies just lounging around. I glanced across the room and saw a familiar mass of curly hair. “Ooh, look, food!” Kate said excitedly, before moving off to the buffet table against the wall. I continued to watch Kevin. He was standing near the far door, dressed and ready for the show to begin in two hours, wearing a fitted white shirt and grey vest, dark jeans and black boots, looking absolutely scrumptious. He was laughing at something Joe was saying, his curls falling gently over his head and his shoulders shaking as he laughed. It was an image of pure happiness, and I didn’t want to stop staring. My full focus was on him, but I noticed Joe’s eyes on me. He nudged Kevin and nodded in my direction as I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. I tucked my chin and glanced at the ground, embarrassed at being caught staring. In a second, a pair of feet entered my line of sight, and I looked up. Kevin stood in front of me, happiness dancing in his dark eyes. “You look beautiful,” he said softly, and I felt the color in my face deepen. There was no way this could be happening, it was all so surreal. “Thank you,” I finally managed to mumble, wishing he didn’t know the affect he had on me. It was clear he was aware of it though, and he made it clear he intended on driving me crazy. Leaning in he whispered in my ear, warm breath sending my hairs standing on end. “Is it crazy that I’ve missed you since this morning?” Oh God, just kill me now and put me out of the glorious misery!! “I’ve missed you too,” I croaked. He smiled that gorgeous grin of his. “Are you hungry?” he asked, brushing a strand of stray hair out of my face. Yes, yes I was. Hungry for him. “Sure,” I replied, glancing toward the buffet and seeing Kate loading her plate full of delicious looking foods. Thank God I brought her, because I knew I wouldn’t have been able to handle this alone. “Hi Henley,” Denise said as we made out way over. She, Paul, Frankie and Nick were standing there picking up dinner. “It’s great to see you again. Kevin couldn’t stop talking about you!” Now it was Kevin’s turn to blush and I glowed with happiness. I put some chicken, broccoli and some mashed potatoes on my plate, positive I wasn’t going to be able to eat all of it. Every time Kevin looked at me, my stomach did a flip. The last thing I needed was that to happen while it was full of food. The lead up to the concert was fantastic; we ate with the band and Jonas family, laughing and having a good time. Kate sat next to Joe, their heads bowed in conversation for most of the meal. Nick kept nudging me whenever he thought something new was developing, or basically every time Kate laughed or Joe blushed. “Wish me good luck?” Kevin said, as Kate and got ready to head out to our seat. He held his arms out, inviting me in. How could I refuse? “You don’t need any luck,” I laughed into his chest as he pulled into a hug. “You’re amazing!” “I could use a little luck tonight,” he said as I pulled back. “I want you to like your present.” “I’ll like it, I can promise you that,” I smiled. “Now just get out there and rock out and I’ll see you after, okay?” He grinned and gave me another quick hug before jogging after his brothers toward the stage. Demi had already performed while we were eating, so Kate and I had to literally run to get to our seats, front row center. The concert was even more amazing than I remembered. Kate was dancing and singing her lungs out with me right beside her, my cheeks aching from the smile that never left my face. Their energy was outstanding, and I kept my eyes on Kevin most of the night. I cracked up at his SOS dance and clapped wildly when he did his back flip. It was a night to remember. They had just finished ‘Tonight’ when Kevin handed in his electric guitar for an acoustic one and stepped up to the front of the stage, with Nick and Joe hanging back. “Hey everybody, I hope you are all have an awesome time, I know I am.” The stadium broke out into screams, which included one of my own. Kevin looked down at me and laughed slightly. “Now, I know I don’t sing many solos, but I decided I would try one out for you.” More screams. “This is a song I wrote very recently, as in the past few weeks, and it goes out to a very important person.” More screams, except for me, I was speechless. “It’s called ‘Seven Days’,” Kevin said, before winking at me and beginning into the song, Joe and Nick picking up in the background. You don't run with the crowd
You go your own way
You don't play after dark
You light up my day
Got your own kind of style
That sets you apart
Baby, that's why you captured my heart I know sometimes you feel like you don't fit in
And this world doesn't know what you have within
When I look at you, I see something rare
A rose that can grow anywhere
And there's no one I know that can compare What makes you different, makes you beautiful
What's there inside you, shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful to me Hey, yeah yeah yeah
You got something so real
You touched me so deep
You see material things
Don't matter to me
So come as you are
You've got nothing to prove
You've won me with all that you do
And I wanna take this chance to say to you What makes you different, makes you beautiful
What's there inside you, (alright) shines through to me
In your eyes I see, all the love I'll ever need
You're all I need, oh girl
What makes you different, makes you beautiful Everything you do is beautiful
Love you give shines right through me
Everything you do is beautiful
Oh, you're beautiful to me Oh, you’re beautiful to me…

Chapter 15
Have you ever felt like everything was just going so well, that it all must have been a dream? That any moment, someone would jerk you awake and bring you right back to boring old reality? I was sure that was what was going to happen to me as I fell asleep that night. So, I wasn’t completely surprised when I felt someone poking me. I was startled, though, when I realized who it was. “Joe?” I mumbled in confusion, wiping the sleep from my eyes and sitting up a little. “What are you doing here?” “I need to talk to you,” he said, bed head hair sticking out all over the place. I was sure mine looked no better. “It’s 7:30,” I grumbled. I had been so looking forward to sleeping in. We didn’t have anything to do until noon, when we were meeting with everyone in the lobby for a day of fun in the sun. “How did you get in here anyway?” I asked, looking over at Kate who was snoring softly under her covers. She would probably die of embarrassment when I told her Joe Jonas heard her snore. “I have a key,” he said, shrugged and standing from his kneeling position, obviously thinking that I would get up now as well. “You have a key to my room??” “Well, technically, it’s my room,” he said with a smug smile. “But come on, I want to talk. Come down and get some food with me.” I groaned and collapsed back against my feather pillows, to exhausted to respond. “Can’t we talk later, like maybe after I’ve had a little more sleep?” “Nope,” he said, grabbing my covers and yanking them off the bed. I yelped as the cool air hit my warm body and grabbed a pillow to cover myself and both Joe and I flushed in embarrassment. I was only sleeping in a t-shirt and underwear. “So, um, yeah, why don’t you, um, get dressed and meet me downstairs?” He mumbled, looking away awkwardly. “Yeah, sure, fine,” I responded quickly, anything to get him out of there. He practically ran to the door and once it had shut behind him I was finally able to breathe again. Kate just kept snoring. I put on my bathing suit and cover-up, a simple white tube dress, just in case this conversation with Joe lasted longer than he intended, and made my way down to the hotel’s restaurant, where they had a buffet breakfast. Joe was sitting in a booth near the window, plate of waffles topped with whip scream, chocolate sauce and cherries set in front of him. I bit my lip, already nervous about what this “talk” was going to be about. I walked over and sat myself down across from him, scooping a blob of whipped cream off the top of his plate with my finger. Why I did it, I’m not sure, although the sugary goodness did calm my nerves. He raised an eyebrow at me. “So what was so important that you had to wake me up so early?” I smiled, showing him I wasn’t angry. Joe sighed, becoming serious. “Well, I wanted to talk to you. I know that since we’ve met you’ve probably noticed a bit of tension between Kevin and me, regarding you.” “No I haven’t,” I lied quickly. “Henley,” he grinned. “You’re extremely easy to read sometimes, you know that?” “I’ve heard,” I mumbled. “But, I really don’t want to cause problems between you and your brother,” I added. “Believe me, I’m not worth it.”
“But you are,” he replied. “And the fact that you don’t realize it, makes you all the more special.” As much as I loved hearing this, I couldn’t help but feel slightly uncomfortable, as the words were coming from Joe. “Joe…” “Let me finish,” he interjected gently. “I want you to know that you have nothing to worry about. I know exactly how Kevin feels about you, and being his brother, I would do absolutely nothing to hurt him. I’m sure you’ve heard things about me being the ladies man or whatever, but I want you to know I’ve never intentionally taken a girl from Kevin, and I never will.” “I believe you,” I replied. “But if you want me to, you know, keep my distance or something…” “No!” he laughed. “That’s not it all. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I want us to be friends, great friends, but nothing more. You’re all Kevin’s. He deserves the best.” I blushed happily. “He’s lucky to have you as a brother, Joe.” “I think he’s lucky to have you as a girlfriend,” he smiled. “But that’s just me. Now, Henley, we’re friends right?” “Of course,” I laughed. “Why?” I asked, suddenly suspicious. “What do you want?” A sly smile crossed his face. “Is Kate single?” I laughed. “Okay, first you tell me that I don’t need to worry about you, but now you’re scamming on my best friend!” “What?” he asked innocently. “I can’t be wallowing in self pity because I wasn’t curly-haired enough to get you. I have to move on.” “Joe, you’re ridiculous.”
We laughed and chatted for easily another hour, Joe regaling me with animated tales of their early touring days and easily keeping me entertained.
“So,” Joe said, leaning back and crossing his arms and smirking at me. “I hear someone was getting some hanky-panky last night with someone who wears a purity ring. You’re a naughty girl, Henley.”
“Joseph Jonas!” I sputtered, turning bright red. “There was certainly no...hanky panky or any kind of panky for that matter! We didn’t do anything!”
“Yeah, sure. Again, you can be very easy to read. And besides, I know my brother.”
“Kevin told we kissed!”
“No, but you just did,” he grinned wickedly. I glared. “But he didn’t have to,” Joe said quickly with that charmingly innocent smile of his. “I can read him like a book and he was completely smitten last night when he got back to the room.”
“Smitten you say?” I teased, trying to remove the attention from me and Kevin.
“Smitten,” Joe confirmed with a lopsided smile. I smiled happily, biting my lip and blushing.
“Well, good morning...”
Both of our heads shot up to see Kevin and Nick standing over the table. Kevin was looking at us curiously, while Nick was staring daggers at Joe.
“Morning boys,” Joe grinned innocently. “Well, Henley, thank you so much for keeping me company, but I’m rather full right now.” He pushed his half eaten waffle away from him. “I should probably go get some packing done.”
Joe stood up and, giving me a discreet wink, walked away.
“I better go make sure he doesn’t steal the towels again,” Nick muttered before jogging after him.
“Did you eat yet?” Kevin asked, looking down at me.
“No,” I replied, getting up and moving to the buffet. We ate and laughed and talked about everything under the sun. It was the I realized that there was no competition when it came to choosing between Kevin and his brother. Kevin would win every time.
“So what are we up to today?” I asked, biting into a strawberry.
“Well, to appease Frankie, who has been really good all tour, we’re going to SeaWorld.”
I nearly choked. SeaWorld. With the Jonas Brothers. This was going to be fun.

Chapter 16
When Kevin first mentioned Sea World, I was totally picturing Shamoo and performing seals. Instead, we ended up at this massive water park, with dolphin tanks to swim in and a slide that took you through a shark infested pool. It was awesome.
I followed the group, made up of family, band, and crew members, Kevin by my side, through a side entrance to Aquatica, which led straight to a private and secluded grotto with numerous cabanas, hammocks and a wet bar. Rolling with rock stars certainly has it’s perks.
Kevin and I wandered into a cabana near the back, and I felt disappointment rise in my chest slightly as Kate and Joe wandered in after us. I was kind of hoping to get some alone time with Kevin – not for some hanky-panky as Joe would suggest – just for some time to get to know him, one on one. You’d be amazed at how difficult it is to have some private time together when you have a family of six and roll with an entourage of twenty.
I dropped my bag onto the lounger and stepped back out into the sun. As I felt the heat against my face I knew this was prime burning day. As if he could read my thoughts, Kevin came up behind me, lotion in hand. “Can I guy get some help?” he asked charmingly.
I turned to look at him. He was in only navy blue swim trunks, and this time, no life vest was there to cover his torso. And oh boy what a torso. While he didn’t have a six pack, his stomach muscles were taunt and defined from his on stage exertions, a faint ‘happy trial’ leading down below the waist band of his short. Oh Lord…
“Henley?” he said again, and I realized I had been staring. Me and my zone outs…
“Oh, um, yeah, sure.” I said, taking the lotion from him and squirting some into my hand. He turned around and I began to spread it around his back, thankful he wasn’t able to see the color burning in my cheeks.
“Need me to do you?” he offered as I finished. I was only able to nod, my hands still tingling from being on his skin for so long. I turned away from him, face red hot as I pulled my cover up over my head.
“WOO YEAH! TAKE OFF YOUR TOP!”
My head shot over to the cabana where Nick, Joe, and Maya (Nick’s best friend) were laughing hysterically as Kate peaked mischievously out from behind the curtain.
“I’m going to kill you,” I mouthed as Kevin laughed. Kate merely responded by loosening the ties of the curtain and letting them fall shut, hiding them from view.
I tensed at first, feeling Kevin’s hands slide over my bare skin, but almost like a massage, his touch relaxed my muscles and I felt all the nerves leave me.
“All set,” he said taking his hands away, far too soon for my liking. “What do you want to do first?” he asked as I turned toward him. I didn’t have time to answer, since I snorted (very unattractively) in laughter as Joe emerged from the cabana, apparently ready to get wet and wild. ‘
He was wearing huge red sunglasses, had white lotion all over his nose, and had floaties strapped around his arms and scuba fins on his feet. An underwater camera dangled loosely from a strap around his neck. Nick, Maya, and Kate followed him out, all dressed normally for a summer day, bathing suits, sunglasses and no floatable contraptions what so ever.
“I call wave pool,” Joe declared, lifting his legs high in the air in an attempt not to trip over his fins as he walked.
“I think its love,” Kate sighed next to me as she watched him waddle down the steps to the pool. I laughed and pushed her on the shoulder playfully.
“Come on,” Kevin said, taking my hand. “Let’s go make sure he doesn’t drown himself.”
JBJBJB
“I totally beat you!” Nick cried as we collapsed back into the cabana three hours later. He and Joe were arguing about which one beat the other in a head to head race down a slide. Nick, ever the competitor, refused to believe that Joe had edged him out.
I smiled and lay down on the lounger, finally out of the sun and heat, and grabbed a water bottle from the small fridge. Joe lay on the lounger opposite, basking in his victory.
“Just take is Nicky, I beat you.”
Nick just shook his head and defiance. “I’m going to go practice.” And with that, he marched back out into the heat, Maya and Frankie laughing at his heels. Kate sat on the end of Joe’s lounger while Kevin forcibly scooted me over and lay down beside me. I glared at him playfully, but it was hard to keep the color out of my cheeks. We were so close to each other, our entire sides pressed up against the other’s.
“Let’s play a game,” Kate suggested, winking at me. “Twenty questions? Corny, I know, and completely cliché, but can get very interesting. Joe, do you want to start?”
“Surely,” he said, sitting up slightly and bending his knees to make more room for her. “Kate, what is your favorite movie?”
“Austin Powers. Henley, your first kiss?”
“Kate! Why would you ask me that? You already know the answer!” I cried, looking at her in shock.
“It’s a perfectly legitimate question! If we keep getting lame one’s like ‘favorite movie’ –no offense, Joe- we’ll never get anywhere.”
“George Holman, eighth grade,” I replied, rolling my eyes.
“And how was it?”
“That’s two questions,” I shot back, flushing red.
“My apologies,” Kate said, settling back against Joe’s knees.
“Joe, most embarrassing moment.”
“Easy, tripping at the AMAs. Henley, how was the kiss?” Kate high-fived him as I glared.
“Oh come on,” Kevin grinned, I slid down in the seat, hiding my bright red face. “Just tell us, we promise not to laugh.” He wrapped an arm around my shoulders and I covered my face in my hands.
“ish as bwamful.”
“It was awful,” Kate translated. “Tell them why, Hen.”
Sighing, I removed my hands and looked over at them. “Because he was hairy.”
Kate snorted in laughter, but Joe and Kevin merely looked at me, confused. “What do you mean, hairy?”
“He had a beard!” I cried, completely embarrassed.
“You were dating a guy with a beard when you were in eight grade??” Kevin looked at me in astonishment.
“No, that’s the best part,” Kate laughed. “He was in eight grade too! He started growing facial hair in sixth grade!”
Joe started laughing at this point too, and even Kevin cracked a smile. I buried my face in my hands.
“They broke up the next day,” Kate continued. “Don’t ever grow facial hair Kevin, or she’ll never speak to you again.”
“I won’t, don’t worry,” he said, placing a comforting kiss on my forehead, finally getting a smile out of me. “I think it’s your turn, Henley.”
“Okay, Kevin,” I said, shooting a look at Kate. “Your favorite Rita’s Water Ice?”
“Blueberry Misto. Henley, you’re favorite animal?”
“The narwhal.”
“The narwhal? Interesting.” He rolled over so our fronts were facing, completely cutting Joe and Kate out of the conversation. I saw them look at each other in annoyance.
“Yes, it is mysterious and majestic,” I said smiling. “Favorite historical era?”
“The dark ages, the Bubonic plague really fascinates me. Best Halloween costume?”
“A Christmas elf. My friends and went around singing carols instead of saying ‘trick or treat’. Favorite pizza topping?”
“Just plain cheese.”
“Me too!”
“Oh, I think we must be soul mates!”
There was a coughing noise on the other lounger and we looked over.
“Sorry,” Joe said, waving his hand casually at us, a disgusted look on his face. “I just threw up in my mouth a bit. Kate, would you care to join me in the lazy river? I need to get away from this.” He gestured over to us and we laughed.
“Lead the way, good sir,” Kate said standing up and winking at me.
Kevin and I laughed as they left us alone, canvas flap falling closed behind them, leaving us in relative darkness, save the small openings on the cabana where bright sunlight flooded in. We lay there for a moment, just face each on and smiling, his arm draped lazily over my hip.
“Second best day?” he asked after a moment.
“I’m a big soccer fan,” I said, feeling more and more comfortable next to him by the second. “And last year over Easter, I went with my dad to see a Manchester United/Liverpool game in England. It was amazing an I even met a few of the players.”
“Joe would like to hear that story, he likes soccer too.”
“Oh, well, I’ll just go tell him,” I teased, moving to get up.
“Oh, no, you don’t,” he said, grabbing my around the waist and pulling me back to him. “You are staying right here with me.”
I giggled as I fell into his chest and he wrapped his strong arms around me, an aromatic mix of chlorine and Ode de Kevin wafting over me.
“It’s your turn to ask a question,” he said as he resting his chin on the top of my head, thumb gently rubbing my back.
“Strangest collection?”
“Oh, good one. Um…I used to collect toothbrushes, actually. I would never throw them away when they got old, I would stick them in a shoe box under my bed.”
“Wow, Kev…that’s kind of disgusting. But anyway, you’re turn.”
He chuckled and brushed a stray strand of hair from my face. “I don’t want to ask anymore. I have plenty of time to learn everything there is about you.”
I smiled, incandescently happy at that moment. He was talking about us being together for a while. I could get used to that idea. Pulling myself upward, an overabundance of confidence running through me, I pressed my lips against his, savoring every moment. Suddenly, he flipped me over onto the cushion so he was on top, and in my surprised, my lips parted. His tongue quickly took advantage of the opportunity, and before I realized what was happening, I was making out with Kevin Jonas. And it was spectacular.
We kissed for a few more minutes – I personally never wanted to stop – until Kevin pulled away and smiled down at me. Then, silently, he rearranged himself so that my back was pressing up against his chest, arms wrapped around me.
“Let’s sleep,” he whispered into my ear as he settled his chin on my shoulder. “This may be the only quiet time we have all day.”
“Sounds good to me,” I yawned, unbelievably at ease curled up in his arms, our legs tangled together. I could get used to this.
JBJBJB
“Give a thumbs up, Joe. That’s a boy.”
I woke up to the sound of Kate’s voice, and immediately dreaded sitting up to see how many people were there, finding me in Kevin’s arms. But, then I head a click, and I knew I had to get up. I nudged Kevin, who grumbled something incoherent in my ear. I nudged him again and he opened his eyes.
“Oh shit! They’re awake!”
Kevin jumped up at the sound of Joe’s voice, tearing after him out of the cabana in a flash. Joe looked terrified.
“What did you do?” I asked Kate as she fell over, convulsing in laughter.
She held up Joe’s camera and smiled wickedly. “A couple good profile pics on here, Henley. That facebook album is going to have a lot of hits.”
“You wouldn’t!” I was astounded.
“Of course I wouldn’t,” Kate said, looking hurt. “I’m not stupid. I know I’d be putting your life in danger with these pictures. And Kevin would never let me and Joe hang out if you died.”
“So why is he chasing Joe?” I asked, standing up and watching them tear around the grotto. Joe hand leap-frogged over a hammock, but his foot got caught in the netting and he landed face first in a pile of mulch. Kevin was now attacking him with a water noodle.
“How should I know, he’s your boyfriend.”
I grinned despite myself. Boyfriend. That’s a nice word.
“What did Joe do now?” Nick asked, entering the hut, watching over his shoulder as Joe tried to use Big Rob as a shield.
“Caught Kevin and Henley spooning,” Kate said, looking at her nails.
“Oh, well, right…” Nick said awkwardly. “Well, Mom says we’re going to head back to the hotel soon to get ready for dinner, so you might want to start packing up.”
“Okay, sounds good,” I said quickly, moving past him and out into the sun.
“Kevin!” I called. “Put Joe down and come and get packed up, we have to go soon.”
“Aw, but sweetie, can’t I just throw him in the wave pool? Just once? Please?”
“Fine, but don’t take to long we have to get ready for dinner.”
Kevin smiled and carried a cursing Joe over his shoulder to the pool.
“What are we going to do?” Kate asked, coming up to me and resting her head on my shoulder. “Falling for rock stars is never a good thing.”
“Oh so you’re falling for Joe now?” I grinned.
She looked wistful for a moment, before getting a smirk on her beautiful face. “Did you know that you can fit two people in those inner tubes on the lazy river?”

“Hm, high heels and a red dress. Very clever of you Kate,” I laughed as he spun in front of the floor length mirror.
“Hey, I pay attention and know what he likes,” she defended. “Now, if you don’t mind, I need to curl my hair some more.”
I laughed and went back to applying my make up. While I would never stand up to Kate, I was pretty pleased with my appearance: messy, yet elegant bun, silky blue dress from Lulu’s with embroidered white flowers at the bottom, strappy white, cork platform sandals and my beloved Pandora bracelet my mom got me as a graduation gift. I smiled as I looked at the different charms, each one having a special meaning. I went to grab my black and white floral tote off the bed, intending on filling it with my make-up for all those “just in case” instances. Unfortunately, my balance has never been one of my strong attributes, especially in high heels, and in my rush, I twisted my ankle and crashed to the ground. Well, almost to the ground. I was caught by a pair of strong arms before I could hit the ground.
I nearly jumped out of my skin as I turned to face Nick.
“How did you get in here?” I asked, trying to catch my breath.
“I let myself in,” he shrugged. “Are you okay.”
“Yeah,” I sighed. “But was is it with you guys and not knocking?” He looked at me quizzically.
“Listen,” he said, shaking it off. “I wanted to talk to you.”
“Okay,” I eyed him warily. This would be the second Jonas today I had a serious “chat” with, and while the first one turned out well, Nick didn’t look too pleased.
“Are you ready to go?” he asked, looking at my bag. “We could talk and walk.”
“Yeah, let me just tell Kate,” I said, running to the bathroom and letting her know. “Okay, okay, no, we won’t leave without you. Yes, you look incredibly sexy. I think he will. Sure. Okay, I need to go now. Yep. No. No more curling. Yes, you look great.” I rolled my eyes and shut the bathroom door behind me; Nick smirked.
“Okay, so what did you want to talk about,” I asked as we walked down the hallway to the elevators. Nick was looking very handsome in dark skinny jeans, a white button up and pale green tie, his medical tag shining around his neck.
“Why do girls carry such huge purses?” he asked, motioning to my bag.
“To carry out stuff,” I responded. “But I don’t think that’s what you dragged me out here for.”
“I hardly dragged you. But,” he sighed, pressing the elevator button and leaning against the wall as the door closed. “I wanted to know what your intentions are with my brother.”
I couldn’t help it, my jaw dropped. Was this really coming from a fifteen year old?
“I-I don’t know what you mean,” I stuttered.
“I’ve seen Kevin get his heart broken more than once,” Nick elaborated. “It’s really hard when we are on the road all the time. Even harder when you are famous and have a brother like Joe.” Now I knew were this was going. “When we saw you guys this morning, I just got a little worried, and I wanted to make sure you weren’t in this for anything other than Kevin.”
“Nick,” I said, finally finding my voice. “I would never do anything to hurt Kevin. Joe and I were talking about there would never be anything between us. I couldn’t do that, wouldn’t do that. And believe me, Joe isn’t my type.”
“Okay, but it’s not only Joe,” he said nodding. “We live in LA. You live in Pennsylvania and go to school; hardly the best way to have a relationship. I want you to know that Kevin will put everything he has into this, and you need to be willing to do the same.”
“I know,” I said quietly, his words reverberating off the walls of the elevator. “I know that. I’ve never said it was going to be easy, but Kevin means a lot to me. I would do whatever I could to make him happy.”
Nick nodded. “I know you would. I just need to make sure.”
The doors opened in the ground floor and all of a sudden we were blinded by flashing lights. Nick cursed under his breath as he grabbed my arms and dragged me out into the swarm of paparazzi that had somehow managed to get past security and into the hotel.
“Woah,” I yelped as my arm was nearly yanked out of it’s socket as he pulled me through them, flashes blinding me.
“Nick, who’s the girl?!”
“What’s your name, honey?”
“Isn’t she a bit old for you, Nick?”
Just ignore them, I told myself as we finally broke free from the crushing wave. Suddenly, Big Rob appeared before me and practically scooped Nick and I up and got us away, unscathed.
“Are you alright?” Nick asked, panting slightly as we escaped into a private conference room.
“Yeah, I think so,” I replied, trying to adjust my eyes to the normal light. “That was crazy.”
“It’s about to get worse,” he muttered, looking out the glass door toward the elevators where Joe and Kevin were now exiting, also caught by surprise. They handled it better than we had, simply ignoring them all together and walking through casually. I couldn’t even imagine what would happen when Kate came down.
Big Rob brought Kevin and Joe into the conference room with us and Kevin made a beeline straight for me.
“Are you okay?” he asked, wrapping his arms around me. You’d have thought we had just escaped a fire rather than a few photographers.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I laughed it off, but he just shook his head.
“I’m so sorry. We should have doubled the security, I didn’t want this to happen.”
“Kevin, really, I’m okay.”
“You do realize what this means, don’t you Henley,” Joe said softly. “Tomorrow your picture is going to be on every gossip website and magazine in the country. It going to be common knowledge you’re dating a Jonas Brother.”
“Yeah, but not the right one,” Nick chuckled darkly.
“Oh, this isn’t good,” I mumbled, running my hands over my face, realization hitting me. “No, no, no.”
“It could be worse,” Joe offered as Kevin wrapped an arm around me.
“Yeah? Like how?”
He glanced out the window. “You could be Kate right now.”
I jumped out of my seat and ran to the glass, pressing my nose to it as I strained to see the elevators. Kate was standing there like a deer caught in the headlights, her face lit up by the flashing lights. She waved awkwardly at them as she tried to peer over the mass, looking for someone she recognized.
Moments later, she was ushered in by Big Rob, flushed red but beaming happily. “They told me I was pretty!”
“Only you would be happy about being attacked by those people,” I giggled, pulling her into a hug.
“Alright, well, we’re all here so, let’s head out,” Kevin said, taking charge. “Our parents and Frankie are meeting us at the restaurant.”
Somehow, we managed to avoid the paparazzi on the way out, and made it to Coconut Point Promenade in good time. The restaurant we were going to was called Fins, and judging by its name, I assumed it to be a seafood place. It turns out I was right.
We were sat outside on a private patio overlooking a lake, orange lights reflecting off the surface. The Promenade was gorgeous, with a Spanish stucco theme, lots of high end shops and restaurants, and across the lake we could hear a band playing. It was amazing.
Kevin pulled out my chair for me as we sat, Joe doing the same for Kate. We looked at each other with wide smiles. Dinner went extremely well (my Mahi Mahi was superb), with everyone laughing and talking about the tour and the future. There was story telling, discreet glances, flirtatious smiles, Big Rob rapping, and the flinging of fish eyes across the table. It was fantastic.
“What do you say to walking about for a bit before we get dessert,” Denise suggested, as we all stood up from the table, completely stuffed from the delicious meal.
Kevin immediately took my hand as we left the restaurant, moving at a slow pace so we fell behind the others as we walked past the shops. All thoughts of the paparazzi encounter were swept from my mind and pure contentment took over.
“Are you happy?” Kevin asked, looking at me as we walked along the lake.
“Unbelievably,” I said honestly.
He smiled down at me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into him. He looked amazingly handsome in dark dress pants and a white button up and skinny black tie. I felt like I was the luckiest girl in the world, like I was walking on air.
We were a few yards behind the rest of the group and I watched as Kate boldly took Joe’s hand in her own. Joe looked at her, surprised, before a grin spread across his face. I giggled.
“They are quite a pair aren’t they?” I asked, nodding ahead. Kevin stopped walking and gave a lopsided smile.
“I think we’re quite a pair.” I blushed happily and placed a kiss on his cheek.
“You’re sweet.”
“Do you want to dance?” He asked suddenly, as we came upon the band that was playing a slow, classic melody.
“Oh, I’m not a good dancer,” I laughed nervously.
“Yes, but you haven’t danced with me,” he smiled, leading me over to the open patio in front of the band. “I have the special touch,” he said as he took my hand in his and placed his other hand on the small of my back. I shivered at his touch.
“Are you sure you want to in front of all these people,” I said, looking anxiously at the small crowd spread out around a fire pit, sipping Cosmos and talking ins hushed tones.
“Henley, baby, I perform in front of thousands every night.”
“I know but they might recognize you.”
“So? Let them. Let them be jealous that I get to dance with you.”
I flushed and let myself move with him, realizing that there would be very little I could refuse him. We spun and dipped, twirled and laughed. He was right, he was a very good dancer. When we stopped, the crowd applauded gently and I blushed even more. The Jonas’ and Kate had moved off, but could still be seen just up ahead.
“Guys!” Joe called back to us. “We’re going to Rita’s!”
“Mm, Rita’s,” I said, licking my lips. In an instant, Kevin’s mouth captured mine and pulled me in for an intense kiss.
“Wow,” I sighed when he pulled away. “What was that for?”
“Will you do something for me?” he asked, smoldering eyes boring into my own.
“Anything,” I tried to say, but my brain was fuzzy and not quite functioning as he looked at me.
“Come to LA.”
That snapped me out of it. I stared at him. “I’m sorry,” I said, shaking my head. “I just hallucinated a bit. What did you say?”
“Come to LA with me,” he chuckled. I shook my head in disbelief.
“First Florida and now LA? Where next, Beijing?”
“Sure.”
“You sounded surprisingly serious there…”
“I’m being serious. I want you to be with me. Come to LA.”
“Kevin,” I replied, trying to find the words to say. “I-I can’t. Classes start in a week and…”
“So come for a week.”
“Kevin, it’s not that simple.”
“What’s complicated about it? Henley, you’ll fly out with us tomorrow, stay at our house, I’ll pay for your flight back home. It will be fine.”
“But that’s just it Kevin, I hate having to bum flights off you and you’ve done so much for me already, I couldn’t possibly ask for more.”
“You’re not asking,” he stressed, giving me a pleading smile. “I’m asking. Please, Henley Fisher, come to Los Angeles with me.”
All he had to do was say please.
“Okay,” I mumbled, feeling happiness bubbling up inside me despite my frustration. “Los Angeles. Wow.”
