Pushin’ Me Away
Joe ran out into the rain. It was coming down hard and the night was so dark that he could barley see. He wiped his wet bangs that were plastered to his face away. He spun in circles as he searched the busy night street until he saw her. She turned the corner, and she was gone. Joe called her name. His voice trying to compete with the torrential rain. He made up his mind. Thinking of nothing else but her, he took off and rounded the same corner as she did just minutes before. He turned into a dark alley. Smoke from the old machines from the buildings that surrounded him, clouding his vison. Blinking letters on old bars seemed to spell out his failure. Joe ignored them. He called her name again as he ran down the dark, lonely alley. The only thing he could hear was the sound of the angry rain as it fell down from the sky. Joe ran through a cloud of smoke. He emerged coughing, and still screaming her name. He rounded another corner at the end of the alley. He saw her standing there. Joe’s heart was racing, his head was throbbing, and his insides were bursting. Joe took off with great speed. He shouted her name again and again as he approached her. She went to run, but he grabbed her arm and pushed her to the wall in the alley. He shouted over the rain. Asking her why? Why now? And why him? Her hair was pulled up, but her bangs covered the most beautiful feature she had. Her eyes. Joe cautiously brushed them away. She swatted his hand away and turned around. Joe said something to her and she turned back and looked at him. Their eyes locked. Her intense green eyes channeled in with his soft brown ones.
Joe asked her again. Why?
Her answer was simple. You don’t understand.
Joe grabbed his hair. What does she mean?
He looked at her. His features on his face had the look of a man pleading. He whispered, “What?”
She shook her head. “I don’t have time for this.” She said bluntly, and began walking away. Joe stood there in shock for a moment until his senses caught up with him. He sped off behind her. After a moment, he caught up to her and grabbed her hand. He begged. She rounded on him and pushed him. He stumbled backwards, and tripped on a rock, and then hit the ground. The pain was nothing compared to how his heart ached. He began screaming her. His tears mixed with the rain, his voice with the thunder, and his heart with the flashing lights in the sky. Joe stumbled onto his knees, the stood up. His whole body ached and he tried to follow her. They hit a dead end and she whipped around. Joe slowly walked towards her as her back pressed against the brick wall. Every step Joe took, the pain got worse. He grabbed her hand. She tried to jerk away, but he held tight. He began shouting, letting out his heart and soul. He asked her what did he do, why was she running away from him. Running away from his life? It was too much. He begged her to stay. He begged her to tell him why she was this way. He brought up all the good times they had, and kept quiet about the bad. He did nothing. Said nothing to make her this way. He didn’t know what was wrong. The more he talked and the more she said or did nothing, the more he became mad.
Tears streamed down his face. “If you read don’t care, then say it to my face!” Joe screamed over the rain. She wretched her hand out of his desperate grip and pushed him away.
You’re pathetic. She said to him.
Joe blinked away the tears. What did I do?
She had no answer.
Joe threw out his arms and began yelling.
She fired back and yelled as well.
A few minutes of this went by, then she said on thing and Joe shut up instantly. His face turned stone-like. She saw his reaction and she repeated it. “I lied. I don’t love you.”
She then pushed past him and ran down the alley. Joe slowly turned around and once again watched her round a corner. Instead of chasing after her, he slowly back against the brick wall and slide down, until he was sitting alone in the dark, raining alley. Joe banged his head against the wall. Tears burned his once-soft eyes, but now they were filled with confusion and hatred. As he banged his head over and over again, he thought “She Pushed Me Away...”
He hung his head, but then shot up. He wasn’t going to end it like this. With great difficultly, he jumped up and ran down the alley. He couldn’t see a thing, the rain was coming down to strong. But he didn’t care; he had to get to her. He rounded the corners they took. Opposite now, left, right. He came out onto the bust night-time city. He whipped around. She was nowhere. She was gone. Joe bit his lip and shook his head. He then glanced to the left and saw her. She was getting into a taxi. He shouted her name as the taxi sped off. Joe thought of running, running after her. Running after her, and loving her. After a moment, he just shook his head again. He slowly turned around, put his hand in his pockets, and walked down the street. Slowly...and alone. He tried to tell himself it was all a dream, and it wasn't going to be like this in the morning, but he knew it was a lie. When he past a coffee shop, his phone rang. He opened it up and put it to his ear. It was her. She was apologizing. And was she crying? Joe was filled with every emotion you could think of. Anger, happiness, confusion, hatred. Joe took a deep breath but it stopped when she asked him to take her back. The last few events replayed in his mind. All the pain she put him through. He took a deep breath. "You're Not Worth It." He said simply, hanging up the phone on her. A weight on his shoulders seemed to lift. Something appeared on his face. Something that hadn't been there in a long time. Even when he was happy. One thing and one thing only. A smile.
