3 years later The noise was deafening. I was surrounded by thousands-maybe millions of people screaming at the top of their lungs. But nothing was wrong, they weren’t screaming because of some major tragedy that just happened or anything. They were screaming for me; for Joe and Kevin, too. Or as we were more commonly known as now, the Jonas Brothers. And it felt amazing. “Ok guys, we’re going to have a quick intermission now.” Kevin announced into his microphone. The loudest groan you ever heard. My brothers, the band, and I exchanged glances, grinning. “But…” I said, and things got a little quieter. “But as soon as that’s over, we are proud to announce Miss…” Joe continued. “Hannah Montana!” All three of us finished together. The arena filled with shouts. It was impossible to hear anything besides excited fans on our way backstage. As I found a cold water bottle and opened it, my heart was beating insanely fast, I was breathing heavily, sweaty, and my ears were ringing. But it was more than worth it. “You guys were awesome!” I heard a familiar southern accented voice exclaim from somewhere behind me. I knew who it was, but when I turned around, I couldn’t even see the person before she threw her arms around me, hugging me tightly. I put one arm around her as I stumbled backwards a little, a terrible excuse for a hug, but she didn't seem to mind. “Thanks Miles.” I said, screwing the lid back onto my water bottle as she pulled away. She straightened out her wig, all set to go out on stage as Hannah Montana, the world’s newest teen sensation. She started talking about our performance, the perkiness never once leaving her voice. I vaguely listened to what she was telling me, my attention caught by something else. Or someone else I should say. “Um…Miley? Do you know who that is?” I asked, pointing to the left wing where a girl was sitting next to who I’m guessing was her mom in plastic folding chairs. She had shoulder length light brown hair and was facing the stage, her eyes wide and staring. There was something familiar about her. Miley turned to look where I was pointing, put one hand on her hip and cocked her head, apparently deep in thought. “Someone who came to the concert, something happened to her, maybe she fainted or something? I don't know. Your dad brought her back here a few minutes after you guys went out.” She said. “So it’s just a fan?” I asked, still sure that I had seen her somewhere before. Miley nodded. “Why?” She asked, looking at me suspiciously. I shrugged. “Just wondering.” I replied, deciding to forget about it. Maybe she had been at a meet and greet one time, and that’s why she looked familiar. “Miley Cyrus to the stage, you’re on in 5.” We heard someone announce. She smiled. “Gotta go, see you later.” She said before running off, fixing her wig and outfit one last time as she went. I watched as her and her dancers got in position and go out onto stage. One of the dancers tripped over the girl’s mom’s purse, which was sitting on the ground next to her. “Oh, sorry miss.” He said quickly. The woman stood up, picking up both the purse and the chair. “Hey Nick, come here.” I turned around to see Kevin, standing a few yards away, motioning for me to follow him. As I walked away, I heard the woman speak. “Come on Jame, let’s move out of the way.” I stopped walking immediately. “Did she just call that girl ‘Jame’? Like short for ‘Jamie’?” I asked, starting to turn back. “Nick! It doesn’t matter! Let’s go, Joe’s waiting for us!” Kevin said, annoyed. “But…” I started, but Kevin grabbed my arm. “Come on!” He said, pulling me away. It could have been some weird coincidence. Lots of people are named Jamie. There was no way that out of all the Jamie’s in the world, the one that I happened to know 3 years ago was in the same building as me, it was practically impossible. But if I said I believed that I’d be completely 100% lying.

“Nick, focus. You realize I just had to sing your part, right?” The sound of Joe’s voice in my earpiece got my attention. I looked to where he was standing by the drums, where we always keep an extra microphone that only the people on stage can hear. For a brief second he made eye contact with me and shook his head, like he was disappointed. I realized that I had subconsciously been playing my guitar and going wherever I was supposed to onstage, but apparently not singing my parts. Instead I was focusing on the girl. Again. I tried not to; she was just a random fan that got backstage somehow. She had to be. “…We got the party with us!” We all finished together. We spent the next five minutes or so bowing and catching our breaths, all of us ecstatic at the sound of an arena full of people cheering for us. Finally we headed backstage. I quickly started walking in the direction of the girl; I needed to know who she was. “Someone’s in a hurry.” Kevin commented, reaching for a water bottle. “Seriously Nick, what’s going on?” Joe asked. “Yea, for the whole song you were just like in your own world, don't even pretend nobody noticed you didn't sing your line. These fans know every word, who sings it, everything.” Miley added. I sighed. “I’m sorry, ok? Just let me do something…I’ll see you on the bus.” I mumbled as I walked away, not stopping when they called out to me again. I took a deep breath, just a few feet away from the girl and her mom. “…That was so cool! I can’t believe how far they’ve come already!” The girl was saying. “Uh…hi.” I said. The girl turned, but didn't look at me. She seemed to be staring at nothing, her eyes never moving toward me once. It had to be her. Her mom also turned around, looked at me confusedly for a moment, then smiled. “Hi! Jamie, one of the Jonas Brothers is here!” She said. “Nick?” She asked quietly, a smile appearing on her face. “Yea…hi Jamie.” I replied, finding myself strangely shy around her, the girl who I considered my best friend for a month. All of the memories I had spent so long trying to forget came back to me all at once. The smile on her face got bigger and she stood, putting her arms out. “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m actually seeing you again!” She exclaimed. I laughed out of pure happiness as I hugged her. “I know; this is amazing, what are you doing here?” I asked. She shrugged. “I’m a fan. It was really lucky actually, we bumped into your dad and he recognized me right away and insisted we come backstage.” She said. I looked over her shoulder and saw my dad and her mom standing, watching us. I mouthed ‘thanks’ to my dad, and he winked in response before going back to talking to Jamie’s mom. We tried to continue talking, but there was way too much going on. People were running all over the place, packing things up, cleaning, getting ready to go to the hotel. We were constantly interrupted, asked to move, everything. I sighed in frustration after having to move 3 times. “Hey Jamie…ever been in a tour bus?” I asked, eager to get out of there. She shook her head. “Well then it’s about time you have been, lets go!” I said. She stood up and I took her hand, noticing right away my palms were hot and sweaty. It was too late to let go though, and if she noticed she wasn’t showing it, so I led her to the back door and pushed it open. I couldn’t see a thing, the flashes were unbearable. I blinked and rubbed my eyes before pushing my way through the paparazzi. Maybe this wasn’t the best idea. “Come on guys, let her through!” I pleaded, tightening my grasp on Jamie’s hand. “Nick! Nick, over here! Is this your girlfriend?” I ignored them, focusing only on getting us away from the crowd. “How does Miley feel about you being out here holding hands with this girl? Does she even know?” I rolled my eyes in response, walking faster. “Nick!” Jamie exclaimed. I turned around just fast enough to see her being pulled by her other arm to some guy with a camera that was asking her millions of questions already. Her hand slipped away from mine as she stumbled backwards, tripping and falling to the ground. “Jamie! Are you alright?” I asked, dropping to my knees at her side. “Jamie, her names Jamie?” The guy asked, snapping pictures every second he could. “Leave her alone!” I snapped, furious at him. I helped Jamie up, and then bent down a little, making another decision that probably wasn’t so great, but you try thinking of a foolproof plan at a time like this. “Get on my back.” I said. I knew there was already half a billion rumors about to be made about me and Jamie and this would only make it worse, but I didn't care. It would take forever to get to the busses if Jamie walked. “What?” Jamie asked, still recovering from the shock of her fall. “Get on my back!” I repeated, a little impatiently this time. She hesitated, but obeyed. I stood up, faltering for a second. I quickly regained my balance and ran toward the busses. Finally we made it away from the mob of photographers and I set Jamie down, standing with my hands on my knees, catching my breath. “Is it like that everywhere you go?” Jamie asked. “Sometimes…usually only when it’s all three of us or we’re with an unknown girl.” I said. Wrong thing to say. “Oh.” Jamie said quietly, her head down, looking really guilty. “I mean…” I said. “Let’s just go inside.” I finished, unable to think of anything else. What I had said was true, after all, and she knew it. I led her into the bus and she sat on a couch. I got out two sodas from the fridge and handed one to her, sitting down next to her. “So does this mean by this time next week those pictures are going to be on the Internet and in magazines and everything?” She asked. “Probably by tomorrow.” I sighed. She smirked. “So I guess I’m Nick Jonas’ new ‘girlfriend’, huh?” She laughed, elbowing me in the arm. She couldn’t see it, but I smiled at the thought of that. “Guess you are.” I said. I knew she was joking, but I found myself almost wishing she wasn’t.
