What? An update? Craziness! Enjoy!
A month after the Doctor told us they were granting Loralei a wish they were over at our house meeting her, asking her about her wish, which was to meet the Jonas Brothers. After they left, with a promise to get back to us within a week, she was so excited, I could not remember ever seeing her that happy in such a long time.
“What do you think they're like?” she asked me.
I smiled and looked at her in the living room, my homework already forgotten, “I'm sure they're still as amazing and great as I said they were yesterday when you asked me.”
She smiled widely at me. The only notable change about her was that she paler. Everyday, it really hurt me to look at her some days I couldn't stand looking at her, because it would make me so upset. Zander had become way over protective of her; he thought she always needed supervision, no matter what she was doing. He treated her like an egg, like the smallest thing was going to break her. I don't want to say my dad accepted it, no parent should ever outlive their child, but he knew it was happening, and he couldn't stop it. So, he made sure to spend as much time with her as he could. My mom...she was having the hardest time with it, she knew it was happening, but she could never admit it.
The foundation people never said exactly said when they thought she would be meeting the guys, but they said it would be fairly soon. My thoughts were broken by ringing, which stopped, so I knew someone in the house picked it up. About ten minutes later, my dad was in the living room with Lora and me.
“So, kids, what are your plans tomorrow?” he asked us.
“Huh, tutor for me,” I told him, even though he already knew that.
“I'm not busy, daddy,” Lora told him. My parents decided to stop her schooling altogether, and just let her be a kid...for whatever time she had left.
“Well, Tar, you're not having a tutor tomorrow. And Lora, no you are going to be busy. We're all going to be busy,” he told us.
I let the silence go on for just a moment, “Why?”
“Who feels like going out with the Jonas Brothers tomorrow for a few hours?’ he asked.
Lora starting screaming and jumping up and down, she pulled me up off the chair I was occupying, and hugged me tight around the waist. My mom came in with Zander, both looking terrified, but after seeing the smile spread across her face, both Zander and mom let a rare smile cross their faces. My dad went on to explain again what was happening, making Lora more excited. I couldn't help but smile and laugh, how is it that a year from then, it wouldn't be like that?
Lora got me up at six the next morning. Not that I minded, I loved it when she would get me up...it was comforting, knowing she woke up that morning. We were going to be meeting the Jonas Brothers, and their parents, and youngest brother Frankie at Pink Berry at nine that morning. I went to the washroom to take my shower. After I was done, I went back to my room with the towel wrapped around me, and dried my hair, I picked my outfit for the day, I paired my 'Shut up and Dance' shirt with my black skinny Capri’s, and my white and hot pick low top shoes. I straightened my chestnut brown hair, and did very minimal make-up.
I went downstairs and waited for the others so we could go, we still had a little while before we left, so I turned the T.V., on. Of course, it was on the Disney Channel, and what a surprise, it was the Jonas Brothers music video for S.O.S.
Not long after, everyone started making their way down, Lora, obviously the most excited about it. All I cared about was seeing a smile on her face; I didn't care how it got there, as long as it was there. We didn't drive in silence, Lora was too busy chattering about everything, over excitement, but none of us minded, obviously.
“Here we go,” my dad said while parking the car. We all got out and headed to the door of Pink Berry. When we were inside, Lora let a squeak out and stopped in her tracks, her gaze was set on six people sitting at a table, smiling, laughing, and talking. Mr. Jonas was the first to notice us; he smiled widely to us and stood up, soon followed by the remaining people. Zander had to pick up Lora and carry her over because she was too excited to walk over there.
“You must be the Porter family. I'm Paul, it's nice to meet you,” he said, extending his hand for my dad to shake. Already I had a good vibe from him.
“This is my wife, Denise, my sons Kevin, Joe, Nick, and the youngest Frankie.”
“It's nice to meet you, all of you. I'm Avery, this is my wife, Eliza, and our kids, Zander, Taryn, and Loralei,” my dad, shaking Mr. Jonas' hand, told them.
“Why don't we all have a seat, the kids can stay at this table, and us adults can go over here,” Mr. Jonas suggested, causing my mom and dad to nod in approval. Zander looked torn on where to go, stay with Lora and protect her from who knows what. Or go with the adults, but yet still stare over here to make sure nothing happened. He stayed with us kids.
“So, Loralei, how are you feeling?” Joe asked when everyone was seated.
She gave a toothy grin, “I feel good. I'm really excited.”
“Well, we're really excited to meet you. All of you, we're so glad you wanted to meet us,” Nick said, smiling.
Lora smiled and looked up at Zander, who smiled down at her.
“She's been looking forward to this for a while, haven't you?” Zander asked, ruffling her hair a bit, making her giggle and nod.
“We were so honored when we got the call to meet you, Loralei. It really means a lot to us,” Kevin piped up.
I smiled over at her, she was really enjoying the attention from the boys, “I know it means so much to her, she's wanted this for a while,” I said, opening my mouth for the first time since entering.
Nick looked in my direction and smiled, I guess I could see why people thought he would be a 'heart throb'. All of them actually, Kevin had this laugh that made everyone around him laugh. Joe was the one who made Kevin laugh, and Nick...I'm not going to lie he's very attractive, along with his brothers. Frankie was adorable too, he was pretty hilarious too. He brought along his Webkinz, which he was showing Lora both of them sitting on the floor.
Joe leaned across the table, towards Zander and me, "So, how long has she been sick, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Almost all her life. She had her first bout when she was three, so we moved here from Seattle. She went in remission, but a few months ago...they found leukemia. They caught it too late..." Zander trailed off, and stared at Lora. She was happy with Frankie; he was going on about where he got each of his Webkinz.
The six of us were silent, Nick was the one who broke it, "I can't even imagine what that must be like. I mean, I have Diabetes, but it doesn't compare to what she's going through."
"She's only eight, right?" Kevin asked, Zander and I nodded, "She's so strong."
"Tar?" Lora asked, looking up at me from her place on the floor.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Can you take a picture of me and Frankie?" she asked.
I smiled, already reaching into my bag, "Of course I can."
"You want some pictures with the boys too, right?" Zander asked, while I turned the camera on.
She nodded, and looked at me while I focused on the two of them, Frankie put his arm around her and both of them smiled. For the next few minutes, I continued to snap pictures, Lora with the boys, individually, and in a group. Then, both my parents and the Jonas' came over for pictures.
"Oh no, I'm sorry, I hate to do this. But, we're going to be late for an interview and photo shoot. I'm so sorry," Mr. Jonas, Paul, said, looking at his watch then at us.
"Oh. That's alright, we understand," dad told him, reaching for Lora's hand.
"Yeah, we're so sorry we couldn't spend the whole day with you guys," Nick told us.
"Don't worry about it. You guys made Lora's day, thank you so much," my mom said, standing the on the other side of Lora, and smoothing out her hair.
"Yeah, thank-you," Lora said, looking up at the guys...with a smile that made me ridiculously happy.
Joe crouched down to her level and smiled, "It was out pleasure."
Then, everyone started hugging. Paul and Denise hugged me, then Frankie, then Kevin and Joe. Finally Nick.
"Thank-you, again," I whispered to him.
He smiled as he pulled away, "Don't worry about it. She's a great kid." He then looked at everyone, slowly making their way to the door of the Pink Berry, "I was wondering...would it be alright if I gave you my number? You know, so that you can keep me...well, me and my family, informed on how she is."
I smiled up at him, "Yeah, that'd be great."
"Alright, awesome," he said. I gave him my phone and he programmed his number in.
We began walking out together; he held the door open for me, where we met both our families, headed in two separate directions to get to our cars.
"Keep me - us - informed, okay?" he asked.
I nodded, "I will."
"And, hey, if you ever just want to talk..." he trailed off.
I smiled, "Yours will be the number I call."
He smiled before heading off to join his family, and then I turned and went to join mine.
