Nick stared at the shattered glass vases on the floor and at his hands that shown red with blood. It didn’t hurt anymore; he couldn’t feel anything. He was numb. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
She stood there in front of him. "I’m sorry, Nick.." She whispered.
"Can’t..can’t we work it out?" His voice cracked. She gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
"Honey.." She reached out and touched his cheek. Her touch made him flinch, yet he craved more. She slowly traced his jaw line with her fingers, then her hand dropped.
"I’m leaving.." She said, her eyes had the glow of tears on them.
Nick shook his head. "No. No you’re not leaving. You can’t."
She bit her lip. Her hair fell in her face. Nick slowly put it behind her ear. His hands shook as he slowly traced her jaw-line and neck with his fingers. She drew in a sharp breath and yanked his hand down. Tears now flowed freely down her cheeks. "No, Nick." She said firmly through her tears. Nick’s lip trembled. "Why are you l-leaving me?" He refused to cry. He just couldn’t.
She stared at him. His green eyes piercing through his heart and soul. The message was crystal clear and that scared him.
“You know why, Nick.” She said quietly. Nick’s expression was desperate. He didn’t know what he did. He didn’t realize what he did. She went to turn around, but he grabbed her wrist. Why was he begging? His mind was fuzzy. He couldn’t think.
“Just think about this...” Nick forced out the words. “Please.”
She didn’t turn around. Please look at me, He silently cried. Please. He wanted to see her eyes...But she never turned around. She didn’t even look at him. She shook her head and pulled herself away from him. She shook her head. “There’s a letter, Nick.”
Nick stared at her. What was she talking about? She answered his un-spoken question.
“It explains it, Nick. Just..read it.” She walked to the door and opened it.
“Please, wait!” Tears flowed down his face and he called her name.
Her hand lingered on the doorknob; and Nick sucked in his breath. Her long fingers fumbled with the doorknob, then they began to shake. Her shoulders shook and she cried out. She shook her head again. “Goodbye, Nick.”
He called her name. Every step she took away from him, a knife dug deeper into his heart. Nick was gasping for breath. When she slammed the door, his heart shattered. She was gone. Nick was crying. He looked around until he found the letter. It was in the dining room. Nick ran to it and opened it up. He could smell the ink of the pen. Lavender. Her favorite scent. Nick’s eyes traveled over every letter, every curly-qu, every space. She signed her name at the bottom. Nick stared in disbelief. That couldn’t be the end. He turned the page around. Nothing. He grabbed the envelope and opened it. Nothing. His brown eyes darted around the room. There had to be more. She couldn’t just leave it at that. She didn’t explain. She wrote ‘I Love You’. Nick scoffed as a tear drop fell and ruined those three words. Lies. They were true. Nick’s arm dropped to his side. He crumpled the piece of paper. She didn’t love him. She lied. She wouldn’t have walked out. Nick didn’t know what to do. He was shaking. He then screamed. He rounded on the table behind him and crashed his arm a crossed it. His screams mixed with the sound of breaking glass. He then collapsed to the floor. His hand’s began to sting. Nick stared at the shattered glass vases on the floor and at his hands that shown red with blood. It didn’t hurt anymore; he couldn’t feel anything. He was numb. He wrapped his arms around himself and rocked back and forth. His heard footsteps, yelling. His family. Nick looked up just in time to see Kevin and Joe flying down the stairs. It was slow motion. Nick stood up and looked at them. Their faces were in shock. Time seemed to slow down for him. He saw Kevin screaming and Joe flying towards him. They didn’t get to him, though. Nick shouted, turned around, and took off. His mind was somewhere else. He could feel the letter still in his hand. Joe was screaming his name, Kevin was crying out for help. Nick took the corner and ran out the back door. It was raining. Nick ran through the backyard and into the front yard. He began running. He had to get away. He didn’t notice that his hands and arms were bleeding. He didn’t notice the car that almost hit him as he ran out into the street. He could hear his brothers call frantically for him. Nick was fast. He was faster than Kevin and Joe. He knew it, they knew it. Nick picked up speed. His brothers cries turned into screams of warning. Nick didn’t see it. He didn’t see the lights of the on coming car. He turned just in time to see it. His life flashed before his eyes. Suddenly, he felt arms around him and he was thrown to the side. He crashed onto the cold, wet street. He began struggling. He didn’t realize it was his brothers holding onto him. Joe held onto him firmly. “It’s okay, Nick! It’s okay...it’s okay!” He cried as his little brother jerked him around. Joe was crying. Kevin grabbed Nick and made his brother look at him. When Nick didn’t obey, Kevin grabbed his brothers face and held it. “Listen to me, Nick.” He shouted over the rain. “It’s okay.”
Nick broke down. He began sobbing. His whole world was crashing. His life was shattering down upon him and he felt like he had no place to run. He was suffocating. His hair fell down in his eyes, and blinded him from the world. He reached up to move his curly locks away, when Joe grabbed his hand.
“Oh god...” His brother moaned. “Oh god...” Joe was shaking. He held onto Nick. “It’s going to be okay, Nick.”
Nick was gasping for breath. He saw Kevin reach down and snatch the letter from his hand. It was blood-stained and the ink was no longer readable. Nick closed his eyes. He felt tired. His heart was beating at the speed of light..then he slowed down. He was slipping away. He could heard Joe’s frantic voice “Stay with me Nick!”
But Nick didn’t obey. He was gone into a deep sleep.
